Virat Kohli at 37 : A New Chapter in His Cricketing Journey

Published on

As Virat Kohli turns 37 on November 5, 2025, he stands at a critical juncture in his career. Unlike many cricketers who begin contemplating retirement after the age of 35, Kohli’s journey is far from over. Despite doubts surrounding his future, his passion for the game remains as strong as ever. His recent performance in Sydney served as a timely reminder that his hunger to compete is far from fading. Each inning Kohli plays now, reflects his commitment and unyielding desire to achieve, step by step, with the same vigor that has defined his career.

Kohli’s Current Status: Focusing on ODIs

Virat Kohli currently plays only in the ODI format, after his shocking retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. His decision to retire from T20 Internationals just months before added fuel to the speculation surrounding his international future. Many had expected Kohli’s participation in the October tour of Australia to be his final appearance in Indian colors. Media reports suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might enforce a domestic cricket rule, limiting Kohli’s availability for only ODI cricket. This led to widespread rumors, with some even speculating that Kohli might soon retire from international cricket altogether.

These speculations intensified between June and October, especially after Kohli’s absence from the India A series ahead of the Australia tour. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the BCCI was not ready to make decisions about Kohli’s place in future World Cup plans. This ambiguity fueled further conversations about his future in the game.

Kohli’s Quiet Time and Return to Form

After the IPL 2025 season, Kohli kept a low profile, spending time with his family in London. Apart from a few candid photos with fans and a brief charity event appearance, there was little news about his fitness or preparation for future series. Despite the quiet period, Kohli returned to international cricket with great resolve. Although he struggled initially, registering two ducks in his first two matches since the Champions Trophy in March, his performance in Sydney was a reassuring sign for his fans.

In the third ODI against Australia, Kohli came back with an unbeaten 74 runs, marked by elegant cover drives and confident running between the wickets. His innings helped India secure a win in the final match of the series, and importantly, it showed that his World Cup dreams are still alive. The knock was a testament to Kohli’s hunger for success and his ability to perform under pressure.

Is Kohli’s World Cup Future Secure?

While the Sydney knock was a strong indicator of his continued relevance in international cricket, Kohli’s place in the World Cup squad is not yet guaranteed. The selectors are aware that dropping Kohli at this stage would be a significant mistake, but they are also cautious about his ability to maintain form at the age of 37. His fitness is not the primary concern, but rather his ability to sustain his performance until the 2027 World Cup.

To solidify his place in the World Cup squad, Kohli must demonstrate his commitment by participating in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins in December. In many ways, the selectors have placed the responsibility on Kohli to decide his World Cup fate. If his performance in Sydney is anything to go by, it seems clear that Kohli is not ready to give up just yet.

Kohli’s Upcoming Matches and IPL Future

Kohli’s next appearance for India will be in the upcoming three-match ODI series at home against South Africa, starting in just a few weeks. This will be followed by another series against New Zealand in January, providing Kohli with ample opportunity to solidify his position for the 2025 World Cup.

In the IPL, speculation arose shortly after his Sydney knock, suggesting that Kohli’s time with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) might be nearing its end. Reports claimed that Kohli had opted not to sign a new commercial agreement with the franchise. Despite these rumors, it is unlikely that Kohli will end his IPL journey anytime soon. For him, RCB has always been more than just a team; it has been home since the IPL’s inception in 2008. Kohli’s unwavering loyalty to the franchise, even during its long trophy-less run, paid off when RCB won their first IPL title earlier this year.

As Virat Kohli celebrates his 37th birthday, his future in international cricket remains as uncertain as ever. However, his recent performances suggest that he still has much to contribute to Indian cricket. Whether or not he plays in the 2027 World Cup, one thing is clear: Kohli’s legacy is far from complete. His commitment to the game, coupled with his determination to compete at the highest level, ensures that his story is still unfolding. Fans and selectors alike will eagerly await the next chapter of his illustrious career.
