India U19 vs England U19, 1st Youth Test Day 3: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Powers India Ahead with 56-Run Knock

Published on

India Under-19 extended their dominance on Day 3 of the first Youth Test against England Under-19. Riding on a blazing half-century from Vaibhav Suryavanshi, India finished strong in their second innings. The team reached 128 for 3 at stumps on Tuesday, building a commanding lead of 229 runs.

Suryavanshi scored 56 off just 44 balls. His aggressive intent placed England on the back foot from the start. Alongside skipper Ayush Mhatre, Suryavanshi put on 77 runs in only 12 overs. This powerful opening stand gave India a rapid start to their second innings.

Ayush Mhatre, the Indian captain, played a key support role before falling to off-spinner Archie Vaughan. Vaughan is the son of former England captain Michael Vaughan. He proved effective with the ball and dismissed both Mhatre and Suryavanshi in quick succession.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Counter-Attack Shifts Momentum

Suryavanshi’s knock was crucial for India. He displayed aggressive stroke play and sharp intent. Facing just 44 balls, he struck the ball cleanly and punished the loose deliveries. His half-century came at a vital stage after England had closed the gap in the first innings.

Suryavanshi’s innings included crisp boundaries and confident footwork against both pace and spin. His fearless attitude defined India’s counterattack. The young batter’s 56 came at a strike rate of over 127, reflecting his attacking approach.

Even after Suryavanshi’s dismissal, India kept the momentum. At the end of the day, Vihaan Malhotra remained unbeaten on 34. He held one end steady as India looked to consolidate their position. Abhigyan Kundu, the new batter, was yet to score.

Ayush Mhatre Anchors Early Partnership

India’s innings began on a positive note with captain Ayush Mhatre leading from the front. Mhatre and Suryavanshi together added 77 runs at a fast clip. This early push was essential after a long English first innings.

Mhatre’s contribution may have been less aggressive than Suryavanshi’s, but it was no less valuable. He rotated strike well and allowed Suryavanshi to express himself freely. The young skipper was dismissed by Vaughan after the partnership had already laid a strong foundation.

Mhatre’s innings once again showed his ability to read the match situation and lead by example. His tactical use of the batting order and timely aggression have been key features of his captaincy.

England U19 Fight Back with Strong First Innings Total

Earlier in the day, England U19 continued their first innings from 230/5. The English side eventually posted a massive 439, reducing India’s initial lead to just 101 runs. This batting performance was led by a gritty lower-order fightback.

India started the day with hopes of wrapping up England’s innings quickly. However, England’s tail had other plans. Several useful partnerships pushed the total close to 450, giving their team a solid reply.

The Indian bowlers toiled hard under bright conditions. While the pitch remained good for batting, there was occasional turn and variable bounce. Indian spinners applied pressure, but England’s batters displayed maturity.

Archie Vaughan Impresses with the Ball

England’s off-spinner Archie Vaughan had a strong outing with the ball. He bowled 10 overs, gave away just 14 runs, and picked up 3 important wickets. His spell included the dismissals of both Indian openers and a key middle-order batter.

Vaughan showed flight, control, and patience in his spell. He made excellent use of the conditions and capitalized on the pressure created by the scoreboard.

Being the son of former England skipper Michael Vaughan, expectations around him are high. On Day 3, Archie delivered a performance that could shape the match further if India falters early on Day 4.

Match Situation: India U19 Lead by 229 Runs

At stumps on Day 3, India’s total stood at 128/3 in the second innings. This gives them an overall lead of 229 runs with two full days left. The match is evenly poised, with India slightly ahead.

The Indian batting unit will aim to push the lead beyond 300. A target over 350 could challenge the English batters on a fourth-day pitch. The surface is starting to show signs of wear, which could assist spinners in the final session.

England’s bowlers, led by Vaughan, will need early wickets on Day 4. If they can restrict India to a moderate total, the match could swing either way.

Youth Test Format Encourages Skill Building

This four-day format between India U19 and England U19 allows young cricketers to gain vital red-ball experience. Players get time to settle, build innings, and learn game management. For both teams, this Test offers exposure to first-class-like match conditions.

Batters are tested on patience and shot selection. Bowlers learn to bowl long spells and plan dismissals. Captains are challenged on field placements and bowling changes.

The current generation of U19 players from both sides has shown significant potential. Strong individual performances in this Test can influence future selections at the domestic and A-team levels.

India’s Bowling Attack Tested

While India U19 dominated early in the game, their bowlers faced a stiff challenge from England’s lower order. The long English innings tested India’s stamina and strategy. Spinners bowled long spells but had limited success.

Pace bowlers used short-pitched deliveries and reverse swing. However, England batters responded with solid defense and well-placed strokes. India will now aim to sharpen their bowling plans before the second innings challenge.

Coaches from the India U19 camp emphasized discipline and consistency during Day 3 breaks. They also stressed the need for better field placements to support the bowlers.

Star Performers So Far

Here are key performers in the match so far:

  • Vaibhav Suryavanshi – 56 off 44 in the second innings

  • Ayush Mhatre – Led a solid opening stand and showed smart captaincy

  • Archie Vaughan – 3 wickets for 14 runs in 10 overs

  • Vihaan Malhotra – Unbeaten 34 at stumps, anchoring India’s innings

  • England U19 Lower Order – Rescued innings with partnerships beyond 230

India U19 Likely Strategy for Day 4

India will aim to bat through the morning session of Day 4. A 120–150 run addition would take the lead past 350. The plan would be to then give their bowlers enough overs to dismiss England.

Indian batters like Malhotra and Kundu will be expected to stay patient. A rapid cameo from the lower order could also help accelerate the score.

Bowling coach’s focus would be on preparing seamers and spinners for final-day tactics. The conditions may offer reverse swing and more grip for spinners, which India would look to exploit.

Despite the deficit, England is still in the game. They will need early breakthroughs on Day 4 to stay competitive. If they restrict India to under 275, the chase becomes manageable.

Batting in the fourth innings, though, will not be easy. The pitch is wearing and bounce could be unpredictable. England’s top order must show resilience and concentration if they are to chase a big target.
