The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced the 22-member preliminary squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. This squad will undergo further selection, with the final 15 players set to be chosen later. Along with the Asia Cup, the Afghanistan team will also participate in a T20 Tri-series. This Tri-series will feature Afghanistan alongside Pakistan and the UAE, with the series scheduled before the Asia Cup. Rashid Khan has been appointed as the captain of the team, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz will serve as the vice-captain.

Team to Play T20 Tri-Series Before Asia Cup

Before the Asia Cup 2025, Afghanistan will take part in the T20 Tri-series alongside Pakistan and the UAE. However, prior to that, the 22-member squad will attend a two-week training camp in the UAE. This training camp is intended to help Afghanistan prepare for both the Asia Cup and the upcoming Tri-series. After the camp, the squad will be trimmed down to just 15 players, who will participate in both tournaments.

The Afghanistan team is placed in Group B of the Asia Cup 2025, where they will face Hong Kong, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The Asia Cup will begin next month, while the T20 Tri-series is scheduled to take place this month.

Afghanistan’s Asia Cup Matches and Group Stage Details

Afghanistan’s team will play all their Asia Cup 2025 matches in Abu Dhabi. They will face Hong Kong on September 9, Bangladesh on September 16, and Sri Lanka on September 18 in the group stage. As part of their preparations, the team has been selected with a focus on spin-heavy bowlers, as the UAE conditions offer ample assistance to spin bowlers.

In addition to Rashid Khan and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the team will include other key players such as Mohammad Nabi, a seasoned all-rounder, and spin specialists like Allah Gajnafar and Noor Ahmad, who have consistently performed well in spin-heavy conditions.

Rashid Khan, one of the most renowned cricketers in Afghanistan, has been appointed the captain of the team for the 2025 Asia Cup. His leadership will be crucial for Afghanistan, especially as they aim to challenge established teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the emerging Hong Kong team. Rashid’s expertise in spin bowling and his vast experience in international cricket make him the ideal leader for Afghanistan’s team in this important tournament. The team will also rely on their younger talents, like Mujib Zadran and Noor Ahmad, who have shown great promise in the spin department. In addition to their bowling strength, Afghanistan will focus on aggressive batting, with players like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran leading the charge. This balance between spin bowling and aggressive batting will give Afghanistan a competitive edge in the tournament.

Training Camp and Preparations for the Asia Cup

Afghanistan’s matches will be played in Abu Dhabi, and they will face Hong Kong on September 9, Bangladesh on September 16, and Sri Lanka on September 18. These matches will be crucial for Afghanistan as they aim to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament. Afghanistan will need to perform well in these group-stage matches, especially against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, who are considered strong teams in the region.

Afghanistan’s preliminary squad for the 2025 Asia Cup shows great promise, with a balanced mix of experienced players and rising talents. The team’s strength lies in its spin-heavy attack, led by Rashid Khan and supported by talented bowlers like Mujib Zadran and Noor Ahmad. With aggressive batters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan looks set to take on some of the toughest teams in the Asia Cup. Their performance in the T20 Tri-series will also be a good indicator of their readiness for the Asia Cup. As the team continues its preparations, all eyes will be on Afghanistan to see if they can make a significant impact in the 2025 Asia Cup.
