KKN Gurugram Desk | In a landmark move to modernize public education, the Bihar government has announced the launch of computer classes in government-run middle schools across the state. This initiative follows the earlier implementation of smart classes in secondary schools and aims to equip younger students with essential digital skills from an early stage.

Digital Learning Expansion in Bihar’s Schools

The education department of Bihar, with support from the finance department, has approved a comprehensive proposal to introduce computer education in 31,297 government middle schools. The program will provide modern computer labs and smart classrooms to create a tech-enabled learning environment for students of classes 6, 7, and 8.

This step aligns with the state government’s vision of bringing digital transformation to classrooms and preparing students for the future. The initiative was spearheaded by Dr. S. Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, who had previously directed the expansion of digital learning infrastructure in primary education settings.

Strategic Implementation of Computer Classes

The plan includes installing fully-equipped computer labs and setting up smart classrooms in every middle school under the scheme. Each lab will be designed to offer hands-on experience in basic computing, ensuring students not only understand the theory but also develop practical skills.

In the initial phase, students from sixth to eighth grades will be introduced to computer fundamentals. This will include structured lessons on operating systems, file management, typing skills, internet usage, and basic productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Curriculum Integration and Custom Textbooks

Computer science will be integrated into the official curriculum for middle school students. Specially designed textbooks and learning materials tailored for beginners will be distributed across all participating schools.

Additionally, trained computer teachers will be appointed to guide students and facilitate the digital learning process effectively. These educators will undergo specialized training to teach computer education in a simplified and engaging manner.

Government Approval and Budget Allocation

After months of planning, the Education Department’s proposal received final clearance from the state’s Finance Department, paving the way for implementation. Adequate budgetary provisions have been made for infrastructure development, teacher training, hardware procurement, and resource creation.

This initiative is seen as a critical investment in the state’s human capital, especially in rural and semi-urban regions where access to technology is still limited.

Phase 2: Basic Computer Literacy in Primary Schools

The computer education program will be further extended in the second phase to students of classes 3, 4, and 5. A total of 40,566 government primary schools will be brought under this expansion. In this phase, children will be introduced to foundational computing concepts such as using a keyboard and mouse, understanding digital devices, and learning to operate basic applications.

This two-phase approach is designed to build a strong foundation in computer literacy from an early age and ensure continuity in digital education as students progress through their academic journey.

Enhancing Digital Readiness in Rural Bihar

With more than 71,863 government-run primary and middle schools across the state, this initiative aims to reach every corner of Bihar, bridging the digital divide between rural and urban areas. The rollout is expected to benefit lakhs of students by making them tech-savvy and confident in using digital tools.

By exposing children to digital education early on, the state hopes to improve employment prospects and digital engagement for future generations.

Teacher Recruitment and Training

To ensure the success of the program, the Bihar government will recruit thousands of qualified computer teachers. Recruitment guidelines will be issued shortly, with an emphasis on candidates with technical expertise and teaching experience.

Selected teachers will also undergo government-certified training sessions focused on digital pedagogy, student engagement, and hands-on lab instruction.

Building Smart Classrooms and Tech Labs

Each selected school will receive funding and infrastructure support to establish computer labs and smart classrooms. This will include desktop computers, interactive boards, projectors, internet connectivity, and backup power systems.

Additionally, schools will receive maintenance and operational support to keep the digital infrastructure functional and up to date.

Broader Vision: Digital Bihar

This move is part of a broader “Digital Bihar” initiative which aims to digitize public services, empower youth with digital skills, and enhance employability. The implementation of computer classes at the school level complements other state initiatives in e-governance, IT training, and digital literacy campaigns.

By integrating technology into the school curriculum, the government is laying the foundation for a digitally empowered generation that can thrive in an increasingly digital world.

The Bihar government’s decision to introduce computer classes in middle and primary government schools marks a pivotal step toward inclusive and future-ready education. With over 70,000 schools to be covered under this scheme, the state is set to become a pioneer in bridging the digital divide through public education.
