KKN Gurugram  Desk | On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 26, 2025, a significant attack took place near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir. Terrorists opened fire on an Indian Army vehicle passing through the area, located in the Sundarbani region, near Fal village. Authorities reported that the attack occurred while the Army vehicle was moving through an area known for frequent terrorist activity. As the vehicle passed, militants hiding in nearby forests opened fire. Fortunately, no soldiers were injured in the attack.

The security forces responded promptly by cordoning off the entire area and deploying additional forces for support. A search operation has been initiated in the area to track down the terrorists involved. According to officials, the region where the attack occurred is considered a traditional infiltration route used by terrorists attempting to cross the LoC from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The heightened alert and search operation indicate the seriousness of the attack and the ongoing threat posed by terrorists in the region.

Previous Terrorist Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir

The incident on February 26 is part of a series of terrorist activities in the Jammu & Kashmir region, particularly along the LoC. On February 7, 2025, seven infiltrators were killed by the Indian Army in the Krishna Ghati area of Poonch district. This incident occurred when a group of Pakistani militants attempted to cross the LoC, aiming to infiltrate Indian territory. According to sources, the Indian Army had received intelligence about an attack planned on its forward posts, and they thwarted the attack before it could succeed.

The infiltrators killed in the attack included members of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT), known for executing cross-border operations. BAT members are often involved in direct confrontations with Indian security forces along the LoC. According to reports, five of the militants were killed, while others managed to escape. The clash is another example of the ongoing efforts by Pakistan-based terrorists to destabilize the region.

Recent Terrorist Encounters and Attacks

In early 2025, Jammu & Kashmir witnessed a series of terrorist incidents. On February 3, a retired Indian Army soldier, Lance Naik Manzoor Ahmad, was killed in an attack by militants in the Behibagh area of Kulgam. Manzoor was traveling in a car with his wife, Aina, and daughter, Saina, when terrorists opened fire on them at close range. While Manzoor succumbed to his injuries, his wife and daughter were injured in the attack. This attack highlighted the vulnerability of retired military personnel and their families in the region, as terrorists continue to target individuals associated with the Indian military.

In addition to the attack on Manzoor Ahmad’s family, the Indian Army has been actively engaging with terrorists attempting to infiltrate Indian territory. On January 30, 2025, two terrorists were killed by security forces during an infiltration attempt in the Poonch district. The terrorists had attempted to cross the LoC, but security forces detected the infiltration and engaged in a firefight, killing two of the militants. One of the terrorists managed to flee back into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), but the operation was a success in preventing further attacks.

Another significant encounter occurred on January 19, when security forces clashed with terrorists in Sopore. Although the terrorists managed to escape, the encounter highlighted the continued presence of militant groups in the region, despite the best efforts of the security forces to neutralize them.

Major Past Strikes Against Terrorists by Indian Forces

The Indian Army has undertaken several major operations to counter terrorist activities, especially along the LoC. Some of the most significant actions include surgical strikes and airstrikes aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating from Pakistan.

One of the most notable operations took place in September 2016, when Indian forces launched surgical strikes on terrorist launchpads across the LoC. On September 18, 2016, four terrorists disguised as Indian Army personnel crossed the LoC and attacked the Uri base camp in Jammu & Kashmir. The attack resulted in the deaths of 19 Indian soldiers and several others injured. In response, the Indian Army launched surgical strikes, killing the attackers and successfully thwarting a larger plot. The operation was confirmed by India’s Director-General of Military Operations, Lieutenant General Ranvir Singh, in a press conference on September 29, 2016.

Another significant operation occurred in February 2019, following the Pulwama attack, where 40 CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide bombing by the Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad. On February 26, 2019, in retaliation, the Indian Air Force conducted an airstrike on terrorist camps in Balakot, Pakistan, in an operation named “Operation Bandar.” The strike targeted Jaish-e-Mohammad training camps and reportedly killed between 150-200 militants, including several senior members of the terrorist group.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Ongoing Security Challenges

The security situation in Jammu & Kashmir remains volatile, with persistent attempts by Pakistan-based terrorist organizations to infiltrate the region. In December 2024, a joint operation between the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police led to the killing of five militants in the Kaddar area of Kulgam district. The militants were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen, a Pakistan-based terrorist organization. The operation resulted in the injury of two Indian soldiers, underscoring the risks involved in counterterrorism operations in the region.

Jammu and Kashmir’s security landscape has been further complicated by the resurgence of local terror networks. In December 2024, security forces apprehended 25 suspects believed to be part of a long-standing terrorist network in the Jammu region. This network had been active for over two decades, with links to both Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba, two of the most notorious Pakistan-based terror outfits. The network, once dismantled, has reactivated in recent years, aiding militants in smuggling weapons, ammunition, and supplies.

The resurgence of these local networks is seen as a direct result of Pakistan’s increasing involvement in Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. According to former Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police, SP Vaid, the Pakistan Army and ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) have been targeting Jammu, particularly since the abrogation of Article 370. This has led to an uptick in cross-border terror activities, with the region witnessing large-scale infiltration attempts and attacks on security forces.

The security situation in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly along the LoC, remains fragile and unpredictable. The recent attack on an Indian Army vehicle in Rajouri is a stark reminder of the constant threat posed by terrorist groups operating from across the border. While the Indian security forces have successfully foiled several infiltration attempts and neutralized numerous militants in recent months, the situation is far from stable.

The involvement of Pakistan-based terrorist organizations like Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba continues to destabilize the region, and the reactivation of local terror networks in Jammu is a growing concern for Indian security forces. Despite these challenges, the Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the nation’s borders and neutralizing terrorist threats. As the situation evolves, it is clear that security forces will need to remain vigilant and prepared for any further attacks or infiltrations.
