KKN Gurugram Desk | Ahead of the Delhi Assembly electionsArvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister and AAP Chief, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to approve a 50% concession on Delhi Metro fares for students. Kejriwal’s demand comes as a strategic move to connect with the youth and address their financial challenges.

Letter to PM Modi: Kejriwal’s Request for Fare Reduction

In a formal letter addressed to PM Modi, Kejriwal emphasized the need to reduce the financial burden on students, stating:

“A large number of students rely on Delhi Metro for daily commutes to schools, colleges, and educational institutions. Offering a 50% concession will significantly ease their financial pressure.”

He proposed that the financial losses incurred due to the fare reduction should be shared between the Centre and the Delhi Government, as Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the two.

Delhi Metro: A Joint Venture

The Delhi Metro is jointly operated by the Delhi Government and the Central Government, making this fare concession proposal dependent on mutual cooperation. Kejriwal’s letter highlights the need for collaborative governance to implement student-friendly policies.

Political Reactions to Kejriwal’s Proposal

Opposition’s Criticism

The BJP and other opposition parties have criticized Kejriwal, calling the move a political gimmick ahead of the elections. They accused the AAP Chief of making promises without proper budgetary planning.

AAP’s Stand

The AAP Party defended Kejriwal’s proposal, stating that the welfare of students and providing affordable transportation are top priorities for the government.

Key Benefits of Metro Fare Concessions

  1. Reduced Financial Burden: Students can save on daily commuting expenses, making education more accessible.
  2. Encouragement for Public Transport: Concessions may promote the use of environmentally friendly public transport.
  3. Support for Education: Lower commuting costs can lead to higher attendance and access to better education opportunities.
