Heavy Rains Devastate South India: 8 Dead in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu; Red Alert Issued for Kerala

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | While northern India continues to suffer from extreme heat, the southern states of India have been grappling with devastating rainfall, leading to significant loss of life and damage to property. In the last 48 hours, several parts of KeralaKarnataka, and Tamil Nadu have experienced severe flooding, with 8 deaths reported across the region.

In particular, Bengaluru, Karnataka’s tech hub, has been severely affected, with multiple areas submerged under water, causing disruption to daily life. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for the affected states, with Bengaluru being placed under an orange alert for the next 24 hours, indicating the possibility of continued heavy rainfall.

Bengaluru Struggles with Severe Waterlogging Amidst Heavy Rainfall

As the rains continue, Bengaluru—Karnataka’s capital—has been severely impacted by waterlogging, with many streets submerged under several feet of water. This has led to widespread traffic jams and disruptions in daily activities. Some of the most affected areas in the city include:

  • Silk Road Junction

  • Hosur Road

  • BTM Layout

  • Other major roads in the city

In particular, Bengaluru’s IT hub has witnessed a collapse of regular activities, with employees unable to commute to work. The situation has worsened in the past 24 hours, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for the city, indicating extreme weather conditions.

In addition to floodingsevere traffic congestion has affected several key areas of the city, including Electronic City and Koramangala, both of which are known for heavy daily commuter traffic.

Fatalities Reported: 8 Deaths in South India Due to the Deluge

Karnataka: 5 Confirmed Deaths

Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, has witnessed extreme weather leading to casualties. In the last 36 hours, at least five people have died due to rain-related incidents. Some of the major incidents include:

  • Two deaths in Bengaluru due to electrical shocks caused by a short circuit in an apartment building

  • One death in Mahadevapura, where a 35-year-old housekeeping staff at a software company was crushed when a wall collapsed inside the company premises

  • Two deaths in Raichur and Karwar due to lightning strikes

According to local authorities, the number of casualties may rise as the rains continue and more affected areas are assessed.

Tamil Nadu: 3 Confirmed Deaths

In Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall has also taken a deadly toll. In the last 24 hours, at least three people have died, including a 10-year-old boy, as a result of wall collapses during the intense rain. The state’s capital, Chennai, has also been experiencing heavy rainfall, with more expected in the coming days.

The IMD has warned that intense rainfall is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, with flooding risks continuing in the state.

Kerala: Red Alert Issued Amidst Continuing Rainfall

The state of Kerala, known for its tropical climate, has seen severe rainfall in the past few days. The IMD has issued a red alert for several districts in Kerala due to the risk of severe flooding and landslides.

The rains have caused the Rivers in Kerala to swell, resulting in increased flood risk. There is a high possibility of landslides in hilly regions, particularly in areas like Wayanad and Idukki, which have already experienced incidents in the past few days.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, authorities are taking measures to manage waterlogging and are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel.

IMD’s Weather Forecast: What to Expect in the Coming Days

According to the latest weather updates from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD):

  • Bengaluru will continue to experience heavy rainfall with potential flooding over the next 24 hours. The orange alert for the city signals extreme weather conditions.

  • Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to receive more heavy rainfall in the coming days, with severe weather warnings issued for several districts.

  • The southern parts of India, especially the coastal regions, may experience strong winds in addition to the ongoing rainfall.

The IMD has advised residents to stay alert, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and remain prepared for emergency evacuations if required.

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure: What’s Being Done?

The heavy rainfall has brought everyday life to a standstill in many southern cities. Waterlogging, traffic jams, and the risk of power outages have left many areas inaccessible. Key transport routes and rail services have been delayed, with the Bengaluru Metro experiencing delays due to flooding in certain underground stations.

Authorities in the affected states are working to:

  • Clear waterlogged roads and restore public transport services

  • Provide shelter and relief to flood victims

  • Distribute emergency supplies to people stranded in flood-affected regions

  • Monitor rivers for potential flooding and deploy rescue teams for evacuations if necessary

Safety Measures and Advice to Residents

For residents in the flood-prone areas of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, authorities have issued a set of safety guidelines:

  • Avoid venturing out during heavy rains and stay indoors whenever possible

  • Stay away from waterlogged areas and electricity sources to prevent accidents

  • Secure your homes and move to higher ground if instructed by local authorities

  • Listen to official announcements for evacuation instructions or road closures

As heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across South India, residents in KarnatakaTamil Nadu, and Kerala are urged to stay cautious and follow official guidance. The ongoing weather event highlights the importance of disaster preparedness and early warnings to prevent further loss of life and property.

With IMD’s red and orange alertsrescue operations are being closely monitored, and all necessary steps are being taken to mitigate the effects of the rains. Authorities are also coordinating with local agencies to ensure that relief reaches victims of flooding and that affected infrastructure is quickly restored.
