In a poignant moment, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir attended the funeral of Major Muez Abbas Shah, a Pakistani officer who had captured Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, an Indian Air Force pilot, in 2019. Major Abbas was killed in an encounter with Taliban militants in South Waziristan, Pakistan, as confirmed by reports from Pakistan’s military.

Major Abbas, who had gained recognition for his role in the capture of Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, was hailed as a hero by the Pakistani military. During the funeral, General Asim Munir expressed his deep respect for Major Abbas’s bravery and sacrifice. He described the late officer as someone who had exemplified courage, dedication, and patriotism, serving as a symbol of national pride for Pakistan.

The Legacy of Major Muez Abbas Shah

Major Muez Abbas Shah, who was 37 years old at the time of his death, became widely known after his involvement in the incident involving Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. In 2019, during the India-Pakistan aerial conflict, Abhinandan Varthaman’s MiG-21 was shot down during a dogfight. The pilot ejected safely but was captured by the Pakistani military when he landed on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC), inside Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

At that time, Major Abbas was a key figure in the Pakistan Army responsible for the capture of Abhinandan Varthaman. The incident escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, coming shortly after the Pulwama attack in February 2019, which was followed by an Indian military strike on Balakot, targeting terrorist training camps. Abbas was lauded by Pakistan for handling the situation during a period of immense pressure.

Major Abbas’s Final Moments and His Sacrifice

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major Muez Abbas Shah was killed in an armed clash with Taliban militants on June 24, 2025, near Sarargoga, in the South Waziristan area, which lies close to the Afghanistan border. During the engagement, Lance Naik Zibranullah, another soldier, also lost his life.

General Asim Munir, while paying tribute to Major Abbas, emphasized the officer’s bravery, patriotism, and his ultimate sacrifice for his country. “Major Abbas Shah showed immense courage throughout his career, and in the end, he gave his life in service to the nation,” said Asim Munir at the funeral. He added that the entire nation was in mourning, and Pakistan would always remain indebted to its martyrs for their sacrifices.

He also mentioned that the sacrifice of soldiers like Abbas Shah forms the foundation of Pakistan’s strength, saying, “The blood of martyrs is the foundation of our nation’s power. We will always honor our fallen heroes.”

The Role of Major Abbas in the Abhinandan Varthaman Incident

The incident involving Abhinandan Varthaman in February 2019 sparked one of the most intense moments of military escalation between India and Pakistan in recent years. The event unfolded after the Pulwama terrorist attack, where a suicide bombing targeted an Indian convoy, resulting in the deaths of over 40 Indian paramilitary personnel. In response, India carried out an airstrike on Balakot, Pakistan, targeting terrorist camps.

In retaliation, Pakistan launched an aerial attack, sending 24 fighter jets to target Indian military installations. During the ensuing dogfight, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s MiG-21 was shot down, and he was captured after parachuting into Pakistani territory.

Major Muez Abbas Shah was among the officers who captured Abhinandan Varthaman. The image of Varthaman, blindfolded and in Pakistani custody, became widely circulated and a symbol of the intense standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Pakistan later released Varthaman as a “gesture of peace,” and he returned to India on March 1, 2019.

The Pakistan-India Tensions and the Role of Military Officers

The capture of Abhinandan Varthaman marked a significant point in the India-Pakistan military standoff, and Major Abbas Shah was lauded by Pakistani officials for his role in the incident. The military actions taken during this period illustrated the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan and were pivotal in influencing subsequent diplomatic efforts.

However, the violence that erupted in the wake of these events did not subside quickly. Despite calls for de-escalation, both countries continued to bolster their military presence in contested areas. The capture of Varthaman and the eventual release were seen as major diplomatic moments, though they highlighted the strained and often adversarial relationship between the two nations.

Pakistan’s Military Challenges and the Ongoing Threats

The recent loss of Major Abbas is a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan’s military in the region. South Waziristan, where Abbas was killed, is a volatile area, home to several militant factions, including remnants of the Taliban and other insurgent groups. Pakistan has faced persistent threats from these groups, especially near its western border with Afghanistan, where cross-border militancy continues to be a significant concern.

The ongoing conflict with the Taliban and other insurgent factions in regions like South Waziristan has led to regular skirmishes and casualties on both sides. The Pakistani military continues to face significant challenges in securing these areas, and the loss of soldiers like Major Abbas underscores the dangers faced by the military in trying to maintain control and combat insurgency.

Asim Munir’s Role as Army Chief

General Asim Munir, who became the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan in 2022, has played a key role in overseeing operations and managing the country’s defense strategies, including dealing with internal conflicts and cross-border tensions. His attendance at Major Abbas’s funeral was a show of solidarity with the fallen officer and a recognition of the sacrifices made by those in service.

Munir’s leadership has been critical in managing the ongoing military dynamics within Pakistan and its external relations, particularly with India. His comments during the funeral emphasized the need for strength and resolve, reminding the nation that the sacrifices of its military personnel are vital to maintaining the country’s sovereignty and security.

Major Muez Abbas Shah’s death is not only a personal loss to his family and the Pakistani military but also a reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces in the face of ongoing threats and conflict. His role in the Abhinandan Varthaman incident will always be remembered in the context of the broader India-Pakistan relationship and the tensions that shape this complex and often volatile region.

As General Asim Munir expressed his grief and pride at the funeral, the legacy of Major Abbas serves as a testament to the courage, commitment, and patriotism that Pakistani soldiers demonstrate in defending their country. For Pakistan, Major Abbas’s sacrifice is seen as an example of unwavering dedication to national service, and his memory will undoubtedly continue to inspire those in uniform.
