KKN Gurugram Desk | “Chhorii 2,” directed by Vishal Furia, attempts to blend horror with pressing social issues, continuing the narrative from its predecessor. While the film aspires to deliver a chilling experience intertwined with commentary on societal malpractices, it falls short in execution, leaving audiences desiring more impactful storytelling.OTTPlay

Plot Overview

Set seven years after the events of the original “Chhorii,” the sequel follows Sakshi (Nushrratt Bharuccha), who now lives in seclusion with her daughter, Ishani. Ishani suffers from a rare condition that makes exposure to sunlight lethal. Their tranquil life is disrupted when Ishani mysteriously disappears, prompting Sakshi to return to the village she once fled. There, she confronts ancient rituals, a malevolent deity, and a community steeped in regressive traditions.

Themes and Social Commentary

“Chhorii 2” endeavors to shed light on issues such as child marriage, misogyny, and blind faith. The narrative introduces the concept of an ‘adi manush’ (caveman) deity, worshipped by villagers who sacrifice young girls under the guise of tradition. The film critiques how patriarchal societies perpetuate such practices, often with the complicity of women, as seen through the character of Daasi (Soha Ali Khan), who serves the deity.

Performance Analysis

Nushrratt Bharuccha delivers a commendable performance as Sakshi, portraying a mother’s resilience and determination. Her transition from a protective parent to a fierce warrior is palpable. Soha Ali Khan’s portrayal of Daasi adds depth, capturing the internal conflict of a woman torn between tradition and empathy. However, the film underutilizes its supporting cast, with characters like Inspector Samar lacking development.

Cinematography and Setting

The film’s setting in dense sugarcane fields and underground caves provides an atmospheric backdrop conducive to horror. Anshul Chobey’s cinematography effectively captures the claustrophobic environment, enhancing the sense of dread. Yet, the film misses opportunities to fully exploit these settings for suspenseful sequences, resulting in a lack of genuine scares.OTTPlay

Narrative Structure and Pacing

“Chhorii 2” struggles with pacing, particularly in the first half, where the buildup to horror elements feels prolonged. The screenplay attempts to intertwine social messages with supernatural occurrences, but the execution lacks cohesion. The film’s climax, intended to be a culmination of horror and revelation, falls flat due to predictable plot developments and a lack of tension.

Critical Reception

Critics have noted that while “Chhorii 2” addresses significant issues, its impact is diluted by a weak horror narrative. The film’s attempt to balance social commentary with genre conventions results in a diluted experience that neither fully educates nor entertains.

“Chhorii 2” had the potential to be a compelling social horror film, addressing pertinent issues within a chilling narrative. However, its shortcomings in storytelling, character development, and horror elements hinder its effectiveness. While the film’s intentions are commendable, the execution leaves much to be desired.
