Veteran actor Anupam Kher has openly criticized the makers of Sardaar Ji 3 over casting choices. The controversy began after the inclusion of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the film. Due to rising India-Pakistan tensions after Operation Sindoor, the movie has not been released in India.

Kher expressed disappointment with actor Diljit Dosanjh and the producers. He questioned their decision to feature a Pakistani artist at a sensitive time. Several industry figures have voiced similar concerns in recent weeks.

What Did Anupam Kher Say?

During the promotion of his upcoming film Tanvi the Great, Kher addressed the issue. He emphasized that freedom of expression must be balanced with national responsibility.

“Diljit is free to express himself,” said Kher. “But that freedom shouldn’t ignore national sentiment.”

Kher gave a powerful analogy to explain his point of view.

“If someone slaps my father, I won’t invite them home to perform,” he said.

He added that he wouldn’t deny rights, but wouldn’t offer hospitality either. “The same rules apply to my country as my home,” he declared.

Kher acknowledged that others may think differently, but said, “I’m not that great a person. I can’t watch someone ruin my sister’s sindoor and still applaud.”

Operation Sindoor and Its Impact on Film Releases

The Sardaar Ji 3 controversy escalated after Operation Sindoor in May 2025. During the operation, tensions between India and Pakistan intensified. In response, the Indian government took strict cultural steps.

Pakistani artists were already banned in India. After May 7, their social media accounts were also blocked within the country.

Despite the restrictions, Sardaar Ji 3 featured Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a lead role. When the trailer dropped online, public outrage followed instantly.

Viewers criticized the makers and Diljit for ignoring national sentiment. The backlash was particularly sharp on social media platforms.

FWICE and Singers Condemn the Film

Several industry bodies and artists reacted strongly to the casting decision. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) was among the first to condemn the film.

Singers B Praak and Mika Singh had also raised objections earlier. They called for accountability and urged patriotic unity within the industry.

There were growing calls to remove Diljit from Border 2, a patriotic film currently in production.

Many questioned how someone involved in a film with Pakistani collaboration could represent an Indian soldier on screen.

What Is Tanvi the Great About?

While commenting on Sardaar Ji 3, Kher also spoke about his own project. Tanvi the Great is his new directorial venture after a long break from direction.

Kher last directed Om Jai Jagdish and I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro. Now, after decades, he returns with a powerful emotional story.

Tanvi the Great follows the journey of an autistic girl. It highlights inclusion, resilience, and familial strength. The film is scheduled for release across India on July 18, 2025.

Kher stated that it took him 23 years to bring this story to life. He believes storytelling should come from the heart, not just for box-office numbers.

Cultural Sensitivity in Indian Cinema

The debate around Sardaar Ji 3 highlights a recurring issue in Indian cinema—national sensitivity vs. creative freedom.

While the Constitution protects expression, cultural and political sentiments often shape public perception. Many believe that patriotism must guide entertainment choices.

Others argue that art should remain separate from geopolitics. However, when tensions escalate, public and industry reactions tend to favor national unity.

Kher’s statements reflect a sentiment shared by many within the Indian entertainment fraternity.

Should Actors Avoid Collaborations with Pakistan?

This remains a divisive issue. India and Pakistan share a complex political history. When violence or cross-border attacks occur, emotions run high.

In such contexts, artists who collaborate across the border are often seen as insensitive. That’s what happened with Diljit and the makers of Sardaar Ji 3.

While some defend the film as an artistic creation, others see it as a political misstep. The ongoing ban on Pakistani artists further complicates such collaborations.

Given the public mood and security concerns, producers are advised to remain cautious.

Why Sardaar Ji 3 Was Not Released in India

Despite global anticipation, Sardaar Ji 3 has not hit Indian theaters. The decision stems from multiple concerns.

First, the movie violated the informal cultural embargo by casting a banned Pakistani artist. Second, it came during a period of high national alert. Third, political and public pressure made screening difficult.

Distributors and exhibitors feared backlash. Theater owners also reported concerns over safety and protests. Eventually, the decision was taken to shelve the Indian release.

Public Opinion on Social Media

Since the controversy began, hashtags like #BoycottSardaarJi3 and #SupportIndianArtists have trended online. The mood remains divided, but the majority leans towards national interest.

Comments on social media range from disappointment to anger. Many believe actors have a responsibility to reflect public sentiment.

Others urge calm and suggest that artistic collaborations promote peace. Still, the timing of the release and the casting choice made this situation especially volatile.

Anupam Kher’s Legacy in Bollywood

Kher is known for his strong nationalist views and powerful roles. He has consistently voiced opinions on social and national issues.

From A Wednesday to The Kashmir Files, his films often touch on themes of identity and duty. Kher also enjoys wide public support and commands respect across generations.

With Tanvi the Great, Kher hopes to offer something emotional yet thought-provoking. The film’s subject—a girl with autism—resonates with audiences seeking meaningful stories.

What’s Next for Diljit Dosanjh?

Diljit has not issued any statement responding to Kher’s comments yet. However, his silence has raised questions.

Some insiders believe that Dosanjh is waiting for the situation to cool down. Others think he may release a statement closer to Border 2 promotions.

With mounting industry pressure, his future projects may be impacted. Casting directors and producers are watching the public’s reaction closely.

The Sardaar Ji 3 controversy is more than just a casting debate. It raises questions about responsibility, nationalism, and cultural boundaries in cinema.

Anupam Kher’s comments have added weight to the conversation. As India balances creative freedom with national sentiment, such discussions will likely continue.

Tanvi the Great releases on July 18, 2025. All eyes will be on how audiences receive both films—and the conversations around them.
