Mukesh Sahani Criticizes NDA Victory, Cites Freebies as Key Factor in Bihar Election Outcome

Published on

In the aftermath of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, Mukesh Sahani, the leader of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), has voiced his concerns regarding the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) victory. Sahani, who was projected by the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) as its candidate for Deputy Chief Minister, is now left to reflect on the political outcome, especially after his party appears to have performed poorly in the elections.

Sahani, speaking to NDTV on Friday, expressed his respect for the electoral mandate but also criticized the NDA’s strategy. He accused the alliance of leveraging freebies, or “rewadi,” to win votes, which he believes played a central role in the outcome. According to Sahani, the opposition’s complaints about vote manipulation were ignored by the Election Commission.

NDA’s Victory Allegedly Fueled by Freebies

Sahani made it clear that while he respected the democratic process and the people’s verdict, he believed that the NDA’s victory was primarily driven by the distribution of freebies. “In the Prime Minister’s language, the NDA is forming a government by distributing rewadi,” Sahani said, referring to the widespread distribution of incentives. He pointed to the example of Nitish Kumar’s government transferring Rs 10,000 directly to the bank accounts of women, which he claimed was a key strategy to secure votes.

Sahani also acknowledged that this election marked the end of Nitish Kumar’s tenure as Chief Minister, citing his long track record of working for women’s welfare over the past 20 years. However, Sahani believed that Nitish Kumar managed to maintain his hold on power by using such financial incentives, especially in his final election. Sahani congratulated Kumar for his success but emphasized that the opposition needed to reflect on the results and how they had approached the campaign.

Vote Theft Allegations and the Opposition’s Struggle

In his conversation, Sahani did not shy away from addressing the opposition’s claims of vote theft during the election. He mentioned that despite raising these concerns publicly, the Election Commission had not taken any action. He stated, “We raised issues of vote theft and also participated in the voter adhikar yatra with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. We raised the grievances of the people, but our concerns were ignored.”

Sahani also pointed out that many voters’ names were unfairly removed from the electoral rolls, and despite the opposition’s efforts to have these names reinstated, there was no response from the authorities. This, according to him, was one of the key setbacks for the opposition during the election. He noted that the opposition had made every possible effort to address the issues, but the lack of support from the Election Commission made it difficult to achieve justice for the voters.

VIP’s Position in the Mahagathbandhan and Their Future Strategy

The Vikassheel Insaan Party, which was once a part of the NDA, joined the Mahagathbandhan after extensive negotiations. The alliance, which included the RJD, Congress, and other partners, allotted 12 seats to the VIP. As part of the agreement, Sahani had insisted on being named as the Deputy Chief Minister if the alliance emerged victorious. The Mahagathbandhan agreed to this demand, hoping to attract the votes of the Nishad or Mallah community and the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), which form a crucial voting bloc in Bihar.

However, as the election results came in, it became apparent that VIP’s performance had fallen short of expectations. With the party not expected to win a significant number of seats, the initial plan of bringing in Sahani as the Deputy Chief Minister now seems unlikely. The poor performance of VIP highlights the challenges faced by the opposition alliance, which struggled to convince voters despite the extensive support of national leaders and regional partners.

Introspection and Analysis of the Election Results

While Sahani expressed disappointment with the results, he reiterated his respect for the mandate. He acknowledged that his party, along with other Mahagathbandhan allies, would need to reflect on what went wrong and conduct a thorough analysis of their campaign strategy. “We will introspect on what went wrong,” he stated. Sahani also emphasized that the VIP would hold discussions with its allies in the Mahagathbandhan to evaluate whether any mistakes were made and how to improve moving forward.

The elections have put the Mahagathbandhan in a challenging position, with the alliance failing to live up to the expectations set by its leadership. Despite Sahani’s earlier projections and demands, the inability to secure a significant number of seats has raised questions about the effectiveness of the opposition’s strategy. The opposition’s inability to capitalize on issues such as vote theft and other electoral grievances further weakened their position in the state.

Mahagathbandhan’s Vision and Challenges in the Bihar Political Landscape

As for the future, the Mahagathbandhan faces significant challenges in rebuilding its base and regaining the trust of the electorate. Mukesh Sahani, though dissatisfied with the outcome, made it clear that his party would continue to work for the people of Bihar. He stressed the importance of understanding the ground reality and addressing the concerns of the voters in a more effective manner.

The Bihar political landscape continues to evolve, and with the NDA securing a strong mandate in this election, the opposition will have to rethink its strategies if it hopes to make any significant impact in future elections. The question now is whether the opposition can unite and develop a more effective and resonant campaign for the next election cycle or if the NDA’s dominance in the state will continue unchallenged.

The results of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections have brought to light the challenges faced by the Mahagathbandhan. While Mukesh Sahani’s VIP was projected as a key player in the alliance, the party’s failure to make a significant impact is a setback for the opposition. The accusations of vote theft, the use of freebies by the NDA, and the internal disagreements within the opposition have all played a role in the outcome. Moving forward, the Mahagathbandhan will need to regroup, reflect on its strategy, and find ways to regain the trust of the people if it hopes to pose a serious challenge to the NDA in the future.
