Bihar Cold Wave Alert : Dense Fog and Freezing Temperatures Grip the State

Published on

Bihar is witnessing an intense spell of cold weather at the beginning of the new year. Bone-chilling temperatures and dense fog continue to disrupt daily life across several districts. According to the India Meteorological Department, cold day conditions are likely to persist on January 2, 2026. The weather agency has issued alerts for seven districts, warning residents about severe cold and extremely low visibility. The ongoing cold wave has already impacted transport services, routine activities, and public health across the state.

Cold northwesterly winds are driving frequent temperature fluctuations. These winds have intensified the winter chill, especially during early mornings and late nights. Many parts of Bihar are experiencing harsh cold, forcing people to remain indoors. Meteorologists have indicated that this weather pattern may continue for several more days. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop further, increasing the severity of winter conditions.

New Year Begins with Severe Cold in Bihar

The new year has started on a bitterly cold note for Bihar. Residents woke up to freezing mornings and thick layers of fog blanketing roads and open areas. Cities including Patna, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai reported significantly reduced visibility during early hours. Foggy conditions made commuting difficult for office-goers and students. Several long-distance trains and buses faced delays due to poor visibility.

The IMD has stated that the current weather trend remains unchanged from January 1. Cold winds and lack of strong sunlight are preventing daytime temperatures from rising. As a result, the cold is being felt throughout the day. Elderly people, children, and those with respiratory problems are facing increased health risks during this period.

Weather Conditions Over the Last 24 Hours

Over the past 24 hours, Bihar’s weather remained completely dry. Despite clear skies in some regions, the cold intensified due to low temperatures and persistent winds. Minimum temperatures across many districts hovered between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures remained subdued, ranging between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Weak sunlight failed to provide relief during the daytime. Even during afternoon hours, the chill remained noticeable. In several areas, people continued wearing winter clothing throughout the day. Morning fog reduced visibility on highways and railway tracks. This led to disruptions in road traffic and rail operations at multiple locations.

Rural areas experienced harsher conditions due to open fields and lack of urban heat retention. Farmers and daily wage workers faced difficulties starting work early in the morning. The cold wave has also affected livestock, prompting villagers to take protective measures.

Cold Day Alert Issued for Seven Districts

The IMD has issued a cold day alert for January 2, 2026, in seven districts of Bihar. These include Gopalganj, Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, and Purnia. In these areas, daytime temperatures are expected to remain significantly below normal levels. Cold day conditions occur when maximum temperatures stay unusually low despite daylight hours.

Residents in these districts are advised to remain cautious. Exposure to cold for prolonged periods can increase the risk of hypothermia and other cold-related illnesses. Authorities have urged people to limit outdoor activities during early mornings and late evenings. Schools and local administrations are closely monitoring weather updates.

Dense Fog Likely to Persist in North Bihar

North Bihar districts are expected to experience dense fog conditions, especially during nighttime and early morning hours. Visibility may drop sharply, affecting vehicular movement on major highways and rural roads. Foggy conditions also pose risks for rail and air travel. Drivers have been advised to use fog lights and maintain safe speeds.

Meteorologists have warned that fog intensity could increase in the coming days. Calm wind conditions and high moisture levels are contributing to fog formation. Urban centers as well as countryside regions are likely to remain under a thick fog cover until mid-morning. This could continue to affect daily schedules and transportation services.

Temperature Outlook for the Coming Days

Weather experts predict a further drop in minimum temperatures across Bihar. Cold northwesterly winds are expected to strengthen, pushing temperatures lower at night. Several districts may record minimum temperatures below 8 degrees Celsius in the next few days. The absence of cloud cover may worsen nighttime cooling.

Daytime temperatures are also likely to remain below seasonal averages. Limited sunshine and persistent cold winds will prevent significant warming. This prolonged cold spell may extend into the first week of January. People are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins.

Impact on Daily Life and Transportation

The ongoing cold wave has had a visible impact on daily routines across Bihar. Morning markets are opening late due to low temperatures and fog. Construction work and outdoor labor activities have slowed down. Public transport services are operating with delays in several regions.

Railway officials have implemented precautionary measures to manage fog-related disruptions. Trains are running at reduced speeds in low-visibility zones. Road accidents have been reported in some fog-prone areas, highlighting the need for caution. Local administrations are coordinating with disaster management teams to ensure public safety.

Health Advisory Amid Severe Cold

Doctors have advised people to take precautions during this intense cold spell. Wearing layered clothing and keeping the body warm is essential. Consumption of warm food and beverages can help maintain body temperature. People suffering from asthma, heart conditions, and joint problems should avoid exposure to cold winds.

Health departments have asked hospitals to remain prepared for an increase in cold-related ailments. Temporary shelters and night stay facilities are being monitored for homeless individuals. Community awareness campaigns are also being conducted in vulnerable areas.

What to Expect Ahead

The cold wave gripping Bihar is far from over. Weather conditions suggest continued cold days and foggy mornings. Residents should remain alert and follow advisories issued by authorities. Regular updates from the meteorological department will be crucial in planning daily activities.

As winter tightens its grip, Bihar continues to battle harsh temperatures and limited visibility. The coming days will test preparedness and resilience across the state. Staying informed and cautious remains the key to navigating this severe winter phase.
