PM Modi Praises Young Congress Leaders but Criticizes Opposition Conduct in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a special meeting with NDA leaders after the monsoon session of Parliament. The meeting was described as informal, often called a “chai meeting,” where the Prime Minister shared his views about the recently concluded session. Interestingly, no opposition MPs were present at the gathering. The session witnessed the passage of several important bills, and the Prime Minister called it productive.

Modi’s Remark on Young Congress Leaders

In a surprising statement, PM Modi praised several young leaders from the Congress party. He said many young leaders in the opposition camp are talented and capable of contributing meaningfully to national debates. However, he claimed that family insecurity within the Congress party prevents these leaders from speaking freely. According to sources cited by India Today, the Prime Minister even suggested that the presence of such energetic leaders may be making Rahul Gandhi feel insecure.

Modi’s remark is being seen as both praise and criticism. While he acknowledged the talent within Congress, he pointed out the lack of opportunity for these individuals due to what he called the dominance of dynastic politics. This remark aligns with the long-standing BJP criticism of Congress, accusing it of family-centered leadership that discourages independent voices.

NDA Meeting Without Opposition Presence

The meeting was attended only by NDA members. No opposition MPs were part of the discussions. The absence of the opposition was also reflected during the Parliament session, where several key bills were passed without their significant participation.

Modi emphasized that despite disruptions, the government managed to ensure passage of crucial legislation. He specifically highlighted the Online Gaming Regulation Bill, which was passed on August 20, 2025. He said the law will have a long-term impact and will directly influence people’s lives.

Criticism of Opposition Strategy

According to reports, Modi criticized the opposition for avoiding serious discussions on important bills. He accused them of focusing only on creating disruptions rather than debating legislation. The Prime Minister underlined that while the government was committed to transparency, the opposition appeared uninterested in constructive dialogue.

This criticism reflects the ongoing tension between the ruling coalition and the INDIA bloc, where both sides accuse each other of neglecting parliamentary responsibilities. Modi’s remarks are being interpreted as a message that the government intends to move forward regardless of opposition strategy.

Passage of the Online Gaming Regulation Bill

The highlight of the monsoon session was the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. The bill introduced strict measures against money-based online gaming platforms and their promoters. With gaming addiction and fraudulent activities on the rise, the government framed this bill to regulate the industry and safeguard consumers.

The Prime Minister praised the bill, saying it would bring long-term benefits. According to him, the legislation will not only control illegal gaming platforms but also help in creating a safer digital ecosystem.

Lok Sabha Speaker’s Statement on Session Productivity

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the House before adjourning it sine die. He shared details about the productivity of the session. According to him, 14 government bills were introduced during the monsoon session, and 12 were successfully passed.

He highlighted that on July 28 and 29, a special discussion on “Operation Sindoor” was held, concluding with Prime Minister Modi’s response. On August 18, a special debate on India’s achievements in the space program was also organized.

Despite these discussions, Birla admitted that disruptions had a significant impact on productivity. The House had planned to conduct 120 hours of debate and dialogue. However, due to repeated interruptions, only 37 hours of actual work took place.

Question Hour and Missed Opportunities

The Speaker revealed that 419 starred questions were listed for the session. Out of these, only 55 questions could be answered orally due to continuous disruptions. This low output highlights the growing frustration over opposition protests and planned disruptions.

He stressed that parliamentary time must be used effectively, and disruptions harm the democratic process. Birla urged members to focus on debate rather than disturbances in future sessions.

Modi’s Positive Note on the Monsoon Session

Despite disruptions and opposition absence, Modi called the monsoon session productive. He emphasized that the government managed to clear several key bills. He said the Online Gaming Bill would have a lasting impact. He also pointed out that the Parliament was able to hold discussions on national security and space achievements.

According to Modi, these debates were important because they connected directly with the country’s progress and people’s concerns. He praised NDA members for their discipline and contribution throughout the session.

Political Message Behind Modi’s Praise for Congress Youth

Observers believe that Modi’s praise of young Congress leaders carries a deeper political message. By acknowledging their talent, he indirectly highlighted Congress leadership’s unwillingness to promote new faces. Analysts see this as an attempt to reach out to disillusioned leaders within the opposition ranks.

At the same time, his remarks about Rahul Gandhi feeling insecure signal BJP’s continued narrative that Congress remains stuck in dynastic politics. This dual message allows Modi to criticize the Congress leadership while still recognizing talent among its younger leaders.

Impact on Upcoming Political Discourse

The timing of Modi’s remarks is significant, as elections in several states are approaching. By positioning NDA as an alliance that values young leadership and constructive debate, Modi is seeking to strengthen the government’s narrative.

The focus on the Online Gaming Bill also shows that the government wants to highlight issues that affect the youth directly. With millions of Indians engaged in online gaming, regulation was seen as a much-needed step. By stressing its passage, Modi aims to connect with young voters who are affected by gaming scams and addiction.

Importance of Parliamentary Discipline

The low productivity of the session raises concerns about parliamentary functioning. Out of 120 planned hours, only 37 were used. This statistic is worrying because important discussions on national issues were left out.

Modi’s criticism of the opposition underlines the government’s call for constructive debate. While disruptions are part of parliamentary democracy, the extent of interruptions this session has led to reduced efficiency.

Broader Context of Parliamentary Sessions

In recent years, both ruling and opposition parties have accused each other of wasting parliamentary time. While the government claims it is committed to reform and legislation, the opposition argues it is denied proper discussion time. This cycle has led to growing dissatisfaction among citizens who expect Parliament to function effectively.

The monsoon session’s disruptions continue this trend, and Modi’s remarks reflect the government’s attempt to shift the blame onto the opposition.

Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with NDA leaders was not only a review of the session but also a political strategy. By praising young opposition leaders, he sent a subtle message to Congress while reinforcing BJP’s stand against dynastic politics. His emphasis on the Online Gaming Bill highlighted the government’s commitment to issues that impact people directly.

The productivity concerns raised by Speaker Om Birla and the Prime Minister’s criticism of the opposition further underline the challenges facing Parliament. The session may have been productive in terms of bills passed, but questions remain about the quality of debate and participation.

As political temperatures rise ahead of elections, Modi’s remarks are likely to influence the narrative around governance, opposition conduct, and the role of young leadership in Indian politics.
