Bihar Weather Update: Rain, Thunderstorms Bring Relief from Heatwave

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | After days of intense summer heat, Bihar has finally experienced a major relief. Over the past two days, the state’s weather has taken a noticeable turn, bringing down the soaring temperatures across most districts. Residents witnessed widespread rainfall accompanied by strong winds, signaling a welcome change from the oppressive heat.

According to meteorological updates, multiple districts across Bihar recorded consistent rainfall and gusty winds during this period. Today, on April 29, several districts are forecasted to experience rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Orange Alert Issued in Key Districts of Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several important districts including:

  • Patna

  • Nalanda

  • Sheikhpura

  • Lakhisarai

  • Jamui

  • Nawada

  • Darbhanga

The Orange Alert, effective from early morning hours, indicates the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by 30-40 km/h winds, thunderstorm activities, and lightning strikes in these regions.

Residents of these districts are advised to remain cautious during the alert period, as there is a moderate risk of weather-related disruptions such as power outages, minor flooding, and transport delays.

Yellow Alert Announced for Other Districts

Alongside the Orange Alert, a Yellow Alert has been declared for the following districts:

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Munger

  • Vaishali

  • Banka

  • Bhagalpur

Under the Yellow Alert, these areas are expected to witness light rainfall and isolated incidents of lightning. While the intensity may be less compared to the Orange Alert zones, citizens are still urged to exercise caution.

Weather Forecast Across Other Regions of Bihar

The IMD has also issued warnings for the following districts, where light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are anticipated:

  • West Champaran

  • East Champaran

  • Sheohar

  • Sitamarhi

  • Madhubani

  • Kaimur

  • Rohtas

  • Aurangabad

  • Gaya

  • Nawada

  • Purnea

  • Katihar

  • Kishanganj

  • Supaul

  • Araria

In these regions, wind speeds are predicted to hover around 30 to 40 km/h, creating possibilities of temporary disruptions.

Relief for Farmers and Agricultural Activities

This spell of rain and milder temperatures brings much-needed respite, especially for Bihar’s farming community. Farmers battling the dry and parched conditions now hope to benefit from the natural irrigation provided by this timely rain.

Agricultural experts suggest that crops such as maize, vegetables, and pulses may see improved health following this weather shift. However, continued thunderstorms and lightning activities could pose risks to standing crops if they persist for longer durations.

Potential Risks and Advisory for Residents

While the cooler temperatures are a relief, authorities advise people to stay alert for potential risks related to thunderstorms, including:

  • Electricity failures due to lightning strikes

  • Fallen trees causing road blockages

  • Minor flooding in low-lying areas

  • Disruptions in transportation, particularly in rural regions

  • Damage to temporary structures

The State Disaster Management Authority has issued guidelines asking residents to:

  • Avoid sheltering under trees during lightning

  • Secure loose objects at home to prevent damage from strong winds

  • Stay indoors during heavy rains and thunderstorms

  • Avoid traveling unless necessary during peak weather activities

Expected Temperature Drop Across Bihar

Meteorological data indicate that the temperature across the state has dropped by 3°C to 5°C compared to last week. Cities like Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur recorded maximum temperatures ranging between 30°C to 33°C, much lower than the previous highs above 38°C.

Night temperatures have also cooled down slightly, offering residents much-needed comfort.

Weather Outlook for the Coming Days

Weather forecasts predict that the wet conditions may continue intermittently for the next 48 to 72 hours in many districts. Gradual clearing of skies is expected towards the weekend, but occasional showers cannot be ruled out.

Experts believe that the current weather pattern is influenced by western disturbances and moisture incursions from the Bay of Bengal.

There is a possibility of another minor western disturbance impacting the region early next week, which might bring isolated showers but not major weather events.

Key Safety Measures to Follow During Thunderstorms

Given the warnings issued, residents are encouraged to adhere to safety protocols:

  • Stay indoors when lightning and thunderstorms are forecasted.

  • Avoid using electronic appliances during thunderstorms.

  • Stay away from water bodies and open fields during stormy weather.

  • Avoid driving during heavy rains unless absolutely necessary.

  • Listen to local weather updates and government advisories.

Schools, colleges, and government offices have been asked to remain vigilant, and district administrations are on high alert to tackle any emergency situations.

Importance of Weather Awareness for Public Safety

The recent extreme weather events in Bihar highlight the critical need for weather literacy among citizens. Experts emphasize that while natural phenomena cannot be controlled, preparedness and awareness can significantly reduce casualties and damage.

Weather-sensitive sectors like agriculture, education, and transport must adopt adaptive strategies to handle such sudden changes efficiently.

The weather shift in Bihar has offered a temporary but significant relief from the intense heat, making life easier for millions of residents. However, the associated risks with thunderstorms and strong winds must not be underestimated.
