Jammu-Kashmir Heavy Rainfall Updates: Natural Calamity Strikes Jammu-Kashmir with Flash Floods and Landslides

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Jammu and Kashmir has been grappling with an intense weather system that has caused widespread devastation across the region. Since 8:30 AM on April 19, 2025, continuous heavy rainfall has been lashing the Jammu and Kashmir area, leading to flash floods, landslides, and significant damage to infrastructure. As of the morning of April 20, 2025, the rains have intensified further, leaving thousands of people stranded and many homes destroyed. This article provides a detailed live update on the ongoing situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu-Kashmir Experiences Heavy Rains and Flash Floods: 3 Confirmed Deaths and Extensive Damage

Jammu and Kashmir, a region known for its picturesque landscapes, is now facing the fury of nature. While the rest of India is battling extreme heat, the region is witnessing a different kind of disaster, as relentless rainfall has wreaked havoc across both urban and rural areas. The heavy rainfall has caused massive flooding in valleys and roads, with several houses collapsing under the pressure of the surging water. As of the latest reports, three people have lost their lives, and there is considerable damage to property.

Flash Floods and Landslides: Ramban District Hit Hard

The Ramban district, in particular, is facing severe consequences due to flash floods and landslides. The heavy rains have led to waterlogging, and many homes have been submerged. Additionally, mudslides and landslides triggered by the rainfall have worsened the situation. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), a lifeline for the region, has been severely impacted, with sections of the road now blocked due to falling rocks and mud, disrupting traffic flow. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded, and the supply of essential goods has been severely hampered.

The situation remains dire, and authorities are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the people. Ramban, along with several other areas in Jammu and Kashmir, has declared a state of emergency as floodwaters continue to rise. Residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with health issues, are at great risk.

Jammu-Kashmir Flood Updates: Jhelum River Levels Rise, Risk of Local Flooding

The water levels in the Jhelum River have increased significantly due to the continuous rainfall. While there is no immediate threat of a major flood, local authorities have warned that areas near sensitive riverbanks may experience sudden flooding. The local population has been urged to stay alert and follow any evacuation or safety instructions issued by the government.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have issued alerts for potentially affected areas. Despite the rising water levels, officials are optimistic that the region will not face a full-scale flood, but they continue to advise caution, especially in low-lying areas.

Lightning Strikes and Further Fatalities in the Region

On the morning of April 20, 2025, severe weather continued to plague the region, with lightning strikes causing fatalities. In the Reasi district, two people tragically lost their lives when lightning struck their tent in the Arnas tehsil. A nomadic family, who were camping in the Dugga Dunsal area, were caught off guard when the lightning struck. Additionally, around 40 to 50 sheep and goats were also killed in the lightning strike, further exacerbating the calamity.

This unfortunate incident is a reminder of the multiple dangers posed by the ongoing extreme weather conditions. The local authorities are focusing on rescue efforts, and relief teams have been deployed to assist the affected communities.

Weather Worsens: Storms and Hail Expected to Intensify in Kashmir

The situation is expected to worsen further in the coming hours. Meteorological experts predict that the region will experience more hailstorms and strong winds, particularly in the Kashmir Valley. The current western disturbance system, which has already caused widespread rain, will likely bring one last bout of heavy rain, which may continue through the afternoon and late evening.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during the storm and avoid unnecessary travel, as the weather conditions are expected to remain hazardous. Local authorities have also issued advisories to stay away from exposed areas and avoid contact with any fallen electrical lines or unstable structures.

Ongoing Landslides in Kishtwar and Other Areas

In the Kishtwar district, ongoing landslides have been causing significant disruptions. The Patharneki-Padhar road, in particular, has been repeatedly affected by falling rocks and debris, forcing the evacuation of over 20 homes. The landslide risks remain high, and residents in the area are living in constant fear of further disasters. As of now, rescue operations are in progress, with emergency teams working to evacuate people from vulnerable locations.

Authorities are focusing on clearing the roads and ensuring that those who have been displaced are safely relocated to shelters. However, the immediate future remains uncertain as weather patterns continue to fluctuate.

Severe Impact on Infrastructure and Transportation

The most affected area in Jammu and Kashmir is undoubtedly the Jammu-Srinagar Highway (NH-44), which has been rendered impassable in several places. The highway is crucial for the movement of people and goods between Jammu and Kashmir. The continuous rainfall and the resulting mudslides have obstructed traffic, with vehicles now stranded on the road for hours.

Due to the dangerous road conditions, traffic police have issued a warning, advising against travel on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway. The authorities are monitoring the situation and have stated that the highway will be cleared for traffic only once the weather improves, and it is safe to resume movement.

In addition to roadblocks, the continuous rainfall has led to disruptions in the power supply, with several areas experiencing blackouts. The damage to infrastructure has made it increasingly difficult to provide relief supplies to the affected areas, worsening the crisis.

Government Response and Relief Efforts: CM Omar Abdullah Expresses Sympathy

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed his deep sympathy and concern for the affected families in the region. In a statement, he said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic landslides and sudden floods that have caused substantial loss of life and property in Ramban. My heartfelt condolences go out to the affected families. We are in constant communication with local administration to ensure that prompt rescue operations are carried out wherever necessary. I will review the restoration, relief, and repair plans later today. Our focus right now is to manage the situation and control the damage. I urge citizens to follow travel advisories and avoid unnecessary movement in sensitive areas.”

The Immediate Future: The Next 24-48 Hours

The situation remains highly volatile, with more rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected in the coming hours. Authorities continue to issue alerts for flooding and landslides, especially in areas near rivers and mountainous regions. The heavy rainfall has also made the soil unstable, increasing the risk of landslides across the region.

Given the continuous rainfall and adverse weather conditions, residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid any travel, especially to high-risk areas. Relief teams are working tirelessly to assist those affected by the floods and landslides, but the scale of the disaster has posed significant challenges.

Jammu and Kashmir continues to battle the wrath of nature as heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides continue to affect the region. With the Jammu-Srinagar Highway blocked, multiple houses submerged, and fatalities reported, the area is facing one of the worst natural calamities in recent memory. As the weather conditions remain uncertain, the government’s relief efforts are crucial to mitigate further losses and ensure the safety of residents.
