UP Police SI Recruitment 2025: Age Relaxation Controversy Deepens, Demand for Six-Year Extension

Published by

The recruitment process for 4543 Sub-Inspector (SI) posts in Uttar Pradesh Police has sparked a fresh controversy. The government recently announced a three-year relaxation in the upper age limit for candidates, but aspirants argue that this step is discriminatory. Many of them are now demanding that the age relaxation should be extended to six years instead of three. The debate has reignited discussions on fairness, delayed recruitments, and the impact of the pandemic on aspirants’ futures.

The Background of SI Recruitment and Court Involvement

The issue traces back to 2017 when the Uttar Pradesh government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court. It promised to conduct regular recruitments for both constable and sub-inspector positions. According to the affidavit, from 2017 to 2019, the state committed to recruit 30,000 constables each year and from 2018 to 2020, 3200 SI posts annually.

However, those recruitments never materialized. The state faced administrative hurdles and later the COVID-19 pandemic further derailed recruitment cycles. Aspirants were left in limbo as vacancies piled up but notifications were delayed.

In 2021, the government issued a notification for 9534 SI posts. Surprisingly, no age relaxation was provided at that time despite several demands. Frustrated candidates raised the issue in the state assembly, but with no relief, many approached the High Court. While some overage candidates were allowed to apply based on interim orders, they were barred from appearing in the written examination.

Fresh Notification and New Age Relaxation

On 12 August 2025, the government announced fresh recruitment for 4543 SI posts. This time, candidates were given a one-time age relaxation of three years. The step was welcomed by many but also drew strong criticism. Aspirants argue that those who became overage in 2021 due to recruitment delays were never compensated, while those who became overage between 2022 and 2024 are being given another chance in 2025.

Leaders from various student groups, including Sanjay Yadav, president of Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, highlighted the inconsistency. He pointed out that during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when relaxation was needed the most, none was given. Despite an affidavit to the Supreme Court, the state failed to conduct annual recruitments. He stressed that if relaxation is being offered now, those who fought legal battles in 2021 must also receive equal benefits.

The Demand for Six-Year Age Relaxation

The controversy centers around fairness. Many aspirants argue that the three-year relaxation does not cover all affected candidates. They believe a six-year extension is justified because the recruitment backlog stretches from 2018. Candidates who crossed the age limit in 2021 were left out entirely, while others who had already appeared in earlier recruitment cycles are being allowed again.

The demand is clear: only a six-year relaxation can ensure justice for all categories of candidates who were deprived of opportunities because of delayed notifications and administrative failures. According to them, the real victims are those who became ineligible before the 2021 recruitment and have not received any relief since then.

Current Age Limit for SI Recruitment 2025

As per the official notification, the age limits for the current recruitment cycle, including the three-year relaxation, are as follows:

For General and EWS candidates, the age limit is between 21 and 31 years. For SC, ST, and OBC candidates, the limit is 21 to 36 years. For General and EWS candidates, the birthdate range must fall between July 2, 1994, and July 1, 2004. For SC, ST, and OBC candidates, the permissible birthdate range is between July 2, 1989, and July 1, 2004.

The government clarified that this three-year relaxation is only a one-time measure. It is valid for recruitment years 2020-21 to 2024-25, covering the 4543 advertised posts. Authorities argued that the relief was necessary because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the long gap in SI recruitment cycles.

The Discrimination Allegation

The root of the discontent lies in the belief that the new rules unfairly favor some candidates while excluding others. Those who crossed the age threshold in 2021 were entirely left out, even though they missed their chance due to recruitment delays. On the other hand, candidates who became overage in subsequent years are being granted relief now. This has led to anger among large groups of aspirants, many of whom feel betrayed after years of preparation and uncertainty.

According to aspirants, this selective relaxation indicates that the government has ignored the plight of those who protested and litigated earlier. They believe the relief should apply retroactively to include candidates affected since the 2021 recruitment cycle.

Aspirants’ Struggle During the Pandemic

The frustration is compounded by memories of the pandemic. During 2020 and 2021, many young aspirants dedicated their time to preparing for government jobs. However, the recruitment freeze due to COVID-19 and the lack of relaxation pushed them out of the eligibility bracket. Now, when the government has introduced relief measures, the same group feels discriminated against because they are not covered under the new relaxation rules.

This sense of injustice has sparked protests and renewed calls for expanding the relaxation to six years. Several organizations have also warned of intensified demonstrations if the government does not address these demands.

Government’s Position

So far, the government has maintained that the three-year relaxation is sufficient and fair. Officials argue that it balances the need to provide relief while ensuring the age standards for SI recruitment remain consistent. They also point out that extending relaxation too far could distort the recruitment structure and affect the age distribution within the police force.

Despite these arguments, the mounting pressure from aspirants and student groups may force authorities to reconsider. The matter could also see fresh legal challenges if excluded candidates decide to approach the courts again.

Impact on 2025 Recruitment Cycle

The controversy has cast a shadow over the ongoing recruitment process. With over five lakh candidates expected to benefit from the three-year relaxation, the competition is already intense. However, the dissatisfaction among excluded aspirants could delay the process further. If the government yields to the demand for a six-year relaxation, the pool of eligible candidates will expand significantly, potentially altering cut-offs and selection dynamics.

The Larger Debate on Recruitment Delays

The current dispute highlights a recurring issue in government recruitment: delays and inconsistent policies. Regular recruitment drives, as promised in 2017, could have prevented such problems. Instead, aspirants faced uncertainty, long gaps, and policy shifts that affected their careers. Experts argue that until the recruitment process becomes systematic and time-bound, such controversies will continue.

The Uttar Pradesh Police SI recruitment 2025 has reignited debates on fairness, transparency, and the responsibility of the government toward aspirants. While the three-year relaxation has brought relief to many, it has also left a large group feeling marginalized. Their demand for a six-year relaxation is rooted in years of lost opportunities, delayed notifications, and administrative lapses.

As protests and legal challenges loom, the government faces the challenge of balancing fairness with recruitment norms. Whether the demand for six years of relaxation is accepted remains to be seen, but the issue has already exposed deep flaws in the state’s recruitment framework.
