Leopard Attack in Bahraich : Mother Risked Life to Save Son

Published on

In a shocking incident in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, a mother risked her life to protect her son from a leopard. The attack, which took place on a Saturday night, saw the leopard emerge from the nearby forest and pounce on the young boy who was playing near his mother. In an attempt to save her child, the mother bravely fought the wild animal. However, after a brief struggle and upon hearing the commotion, the family members and local villagers rushed to the scene, chasing the leopard away. The animal eventually retreated into the forest, leaving the mother and child severely injured.

The incident occurred in the Durga Gaudi village, located near the Sujoli range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. The injured mother and son were quickly transported to the Motipur Community Health Center (CHC) by ambulance. From there, after receiving initial treatment, both were referred to the nearby medical college for further care.

Incident Details

The attack took place late on a Saturday night. The mother, 22-year-old Shree Devi, and her 5-year-old son Jitin were sitting outside their house in the Durga Gaudi market area, which borders the forests of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. The young boy was playing near his mother when suddenly a leopard emerged from the nearby forest and attacked him. In a desperate bid to protect her son, Shree Devi tried to push the leopard away. However, the animal turned on her, attacking her and leaving both mother and child with severe injuries.

Upon hearing the screams of the victims, the family members and other villagers immediately ran toward the scene. They raised an alarm and chased the leopard, forcing it to flee back into the jungle. The leopard, unable to overpower the mother, abandoned its attack and retreated.

The injured mother and son were swiftly moved to Motipur CHC in an ambulance, where doctors provided them with initial medical attention. The severity of their injuries, however, led to their referral to the medical college for more advanced treatment.

Increasing Threat of Leopards in the Region

The incident highlights an ongoing issue in the region, where leopards have been increasingly spotted near human settlements. Many areas surrounding the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary have been witnessing frequent sightings of leopards and wolves near populated regions. These animals often venture into villages in search of food or shelter, leading to increased risks for residents.

Local authorities, including the forest department, have been actively monitoring the situation. They have been urging villagers to be cautious and stay alert, especially during the night. Villagers are advised to travel in groups and avoid walking alone after dark. The forest department has also been raising awareness among the locals about the importance of keeping their surroundings secure and taking necessary precautions to avoid such dangerous encounters.

Community and Forest Department Response

In response to the growing threat of leopards and other wildlife, the forest department has been taking steps to mitigate the risks. There have been reports of leopards attacking livestock and occasionally, humans, which has raised concerns in nearby villages. To prevent further incidents, the department has been working on enhancing security measures, including setting up alert systems, monitoring the movement of wildlife, and providing more safety instructions to villagers.

While leopards are protected under Indian wildlife laws, their growing presence near human settlements requires a careful balance between conservation and ensuring the safety of residents. Efforts to relocate wildlife and minimize human-wildlife conflict are ongoing, but it remains a challenging task.

Medical Status of Victims

As of now, both Shree Devi and her son Jitin are receiving treatment for their injuries. The mother, who suffered from severe wounds after the leopard’s attack, is in critical condition. Her son, though also injured, is expected to recover with proper medical care. The family is being closely monitored by doctors at the medical college, and both are expected to undergo further treatments and assessments in the coming days.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from living near wildlife habitats. It also brings to light the need for better management of wildlife corridors and better safety protocols for people living in these vulnerable areas.

The leopard attack in Bahraich is an unfortunate reminder of the increasing human-wildlife conflict that is being witnessed in many parts of Uttar Pradesh. With forests and human settlements often overlapping, such incidents have become more common. The heroic actions of Shree Devi, who risked her life to save her son, have brought attention to the ongoing wildlife issues in the region. The forest department and local authorities must continue to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife.

Meanwhile, local villagers are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines to prevent any further incidents. Such attacks highlight the need for increased awareness, improved safety measures, and responsible behavior from both wildlife conservationists and the local community. The situation is delicate, but with proper intervention, it is possible to mitigate the risks posed by wild animals living near human settlements.
