KKN Gurugram Desk | After a two-month summer hiatus, government-run schools across Bihar – from primary to high school level – are reopening today, Monday, June 23. With the implementation of a revised daily schedule and a warm Welcome Week, more than 81,000 schools are set to resume operations, aiming to enhance student attendance and learning outcomes following the summer break.

Schools Resume Amid ‘Welcome Week’ Spirit

The Bihar Education Department has scheduled the school reopening on June 23, accompanied by a specially designated Welcome Week celebration to help students readjust to regular schooling routines. The initiative focuses on building positive classroom environments and strengthening engagement after the prolonged summer holiday.

During the first official week, teachers – across the 71,000+ primary schools – will conduct welcome ceremonies, which include a traditional tilak, a warm handshake, and a verbal greeting to each student. This approach fosters emotional connection and renewed enthusiasm among students, making their transition back into the classroom more welcoming and reassuring.

 New School Timings Announced

One of the key changes this reopening brings is a new daily schedule running from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. During summer vacation, schools had operated only in the early morning hours. Moving forward, the revised timings aim to create a balanced academic day for students:

  • 9:30 – 10:00 AM: Morning Prayer Session with hymns, motivational reading, and mindfulness

  • 10:00 – 12:00 PM (Two 40-minute periods): Academic Blocks 1 & 2

  • 12:00 – 12:30 PM: Midday Meal / Lunch Break

  • 12:30 – 2:30 PM (Two 40-minute periods): Academic Blocks 3 & 4

  • 2:30 – 4:00 PM: Enrichment activities, revision, and announcements

This structured schedule ensures children receive a healthy midday meal and a well-paced learning routine, promoting both physical well-being and academic clarity.

Revised Teaching Plans for the Week

To kick off the reopened academic calendar, teachers will use the Welcome Week to introduce subject-specific activities aimed at boosting engagement and reinforcing core learning:

  • Wednesday (First teaching block): Focus on Mathematics with problem-solving sessions designed to ease students back into numerical reasoning.

  • Thursday (First teaching block): Hindi Reading Class, where students participate in reading aloud a selected chapter, promoting language fluency and confidence.

  • Friday: Students will be grouped into small batches and recognized for their performance, especially for homework efforts during break, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.

These subject-specific engagement days help teachers effectively measure comprehension and identify areas needing extra attention post-vacation.

 Midday Meal Scheme Strengthened

The midday meal break is scheduled from 12:00 – 12:30 PM, ensuring students receive nutritious midday meals every school day. The midday meal program in Bihar plays an important role in improving student attendance, health, and overall well-being. Ensuring a consistent meal schedule helps promote both academic performance and physical health among young learners.

Why These Changes Matter for Bihar’s Education Quality

Bihar’s revised school timings post-summer break are designed to bring long-term benefits:

  1. Improved Attendance: Morning prayer sessions, structured timings, and a welcoming school environment encourage attendance.

  2. Holistic Development: Morning sessions integrate values, mindfulness, and community interaction into the school day.

  3. Balanced Academic Pace: Dividing the day into four 40-minute classes supports focused and sustained learning without overwhelming students.

  4. Recess & Wellness: The midday meal and break reinforce good nutrition and social interaction.

  5. Academic Readiness: Special subject integration during the first week ensures children reconnect with curricular basics.

 Teacher Preparedness and Training

In preparation for reopening, the Bihar Education Department has facilitated workshops for teachers and headmasters, focusing on:

  • Managing the Welcome Week activities

  • Conducting mindful morning sessions

  • Effectively administering subject-specific blocks

  • Guided assessments of student homework and performance

Teacher training helps ensure that the revised schedule is implemented with consistency and effectiveness across the state’s vast educational network.

 Education Department Directives in Action

Primary Education Director Sahila issued guidelines to district education officers, outlining:

  • Strict compliance with revised school timings (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM)

  • Designated midday meal break

  • Welcome Week ceremonies and consistent implementation of weekday plans

  • Hygiene protocols and safe meal handling by midday meal staff

This directive aims to ensure administrative coherence and operational consistency across every school.

Collaboration with Parents & Community Stakeholders

The school reopening initiative emphasizes broader community collaboration. This includes:

  • Parent–Teacher Meetings (PTMs) scheduled at the end of Welcome Week

  • Teachers and parents working together to ensure students complete their assigned homework

  • Establishing open communication channels through school committees, SMS alerts, and WhatsApp groups

Active parent involvement strengthens the school-to-home connection, which is vital for the success of this initiative.

Student Well-Being and Emotional Adjustment

Extending school hours post break brings additional adjustments—emotionally and socially. To support this:

  • Teachers integrate short mindfulness or outdoor activities to reduce stress

  • A buddy system pairs younger students with peer mentors

  • Regular teacher check-ins to monitor student comfort and engagement

These mental health-focused strategies ensure students remain emotionally supported during their transition back to school life.

A Vision for Bihar’s Educational Transformation

These efforts reflect a larger vision to improve Bihar’s educational standards:

  1. Inclusive Reopening: Nearly 81,000 schools reopened today—an extensive operational effort.

  2. Enhanced Student Engagement: Structured timetables and Welcome Week activities foster motivation.

  3. Academic Recovery Focus: Wednesday and Thursday lesson emphasis helps students regain academic rhythm.

  4. Comprehensive Afternoon Blocks: Well-balanced subject teaching throughout the day.

  5. Multi-Dimensional Growth: Integration of character-building and well-being across school days.

These steps coincide with the larger National Education Policy goals, emphasising joyful learning, equity, and holistic student wellbeing.

As Bihar’s government schools resume from summer vacation today, the revised schedule—with 9:30 AM start, morning prayer, structured classes, and midday meals—offers students a well-rounded academic and emotional reentry. Enhanced by a Welcome Week, these measures are designed to build motivation, academic readiness, and emotional well-being. Strong teacher training, department directives, and parent engagement are all building a purposive foundation for the long-term uplift of education in Bihar.
