Bihar Weather Forecast: Heavy Rainfall Expected Across 11 Districts

Published on

The weather in Bihar is expected to take a significant turn today, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rainfall in 11 districts. A weather alert was issued by the department on Sunday, warning residents to prepare for the upcoming downpour. According to the department’s forecast, cloudy weather will persist throughout Sunday in Patna, with the possibility of light rain in several areas. Some regions might experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds.

Weather Outlook for Patna and Surrounding Areas

The rains have already begun to disrupt daily life in Patna and surrounding areas. Since Saturday morning, intermittent showers have been causing traffic disruptions and waterlogging in several parts of the city. As per the forecast for Sunday, Patna might experience scattered rain with the possibility of thunder and strong winds at isolated locations. The ongoing rainfall and gusty winds are expected to continue until at least October 7.

Heavy Rainfall Likely to Persist Till October 7

According to the weather department, the rains are not expected to cease anytime soon. It is anticipated that Bihar will continue to experience significant rainfall until October 7. This could be the final round of heavy rains before the monsoon season officially withdraws. However, it is expected that the state’s weather will still see a few more showers, which will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, signaling the arrival of a cool breeze in the region.

Cities Under High Alert for Heavy Rain

The weather department has issued a red alert for Supaul, Araria, and Madhubani, indicating that these areas are likely to experience severe rainfall. Additionally, districts such as Kishanganj, Madhepura, Purnia, and Saharsa have been placed under an orange alert due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. Yellow alerts have been issued for districts like Katihar, Khagaria, Samastipur, and Darbhanga, where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected at a few locations.

As for the wind speeds, the department forecasts winds at speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in parts of North Bihar and the southern-central and southeastern regions. The rain and winds will likely cause temporary disruptions in daily activities, especially in low-lying areas.

Rainfall Data from Saturday

The heavy rainfall that began on Saturday affected over 26 districts across Bihar. Among the most affected were Motihari, which recorded 122.1 mm of rain, and Muzaffarpur, which saw 83.4 mm of rainfall. Other areas such as Madhubani, Saharsa, and Patna also received significant rainfall, with Patna itself recording 43.9 mm of rain. The rainfall led to a noticeable drop in the maximum temperature across the state, with the mercury dipping to 32.2°C in Sheikhpura, while the minimum temperature rose slightly to 23.2°C in Dehri.

Current Weather and Temperature Changes

In addition to the rain, the weather conditions on Saturday caused a noticeable shift in temperatures. The maximum temperature dropped by about 0.8°C, while the minimum temperature saw a rise of about 2°C. In Patna, the maximum temperature was recorded at 28°C, and the minimum temperature stood at 26.4°C. The combination of rain and winds has also led to a drop in the heat, providing some relief to residents who had been enduring the summer’s heat waves.

Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions in Patna

The rain has had a significant impact on Patna’s infrastructure. The city experienced waterlogging in several low-lying areas, particularly on roads and streets that were already prone to flooding during the monsoon season. Many vehicles were stuck in traffic due to these waterlogged conditions. This has led to inconvenience for commuters, particularly in areas like Mithapur, where roads have collapsed under the pressure of heavy rainfall.

Impact on Agriculture and Daily Life

The continuous rainfall poses a risk to both agricultural activities and the daily lives of the people. While the rains are crucial for the crops, especially during the monsoon season, they also bring certain challenges. The constant rainfall, combined with the potential for floods, could affect the ongoing harvest and damage standing crops. Many farmers in rural Bihar are already concerned about the impact of the heavy rains on their livelihoods. Additionally, the persistent weather conditions have affected transportation, with flights being diverted and train services delayed due to the weather.

Emergency Alerts and Public Safety Measures

In light of the adverse weather conditions, the Meteorological Department has urged the residents of Bihar to take necessary precautions. Authorities have advised people to avoid going outdoors during heavy rainfall, especially in areas where lightning and strong winds are expected. The public has been cautioned against standing under trees and near tall structures during thunderstorms to avoid accidents.

Looking Ahead: What to Expect in the Coming Days

The weather department predicts that the rains will likely subside by the end of this week. However, the cooler weather that follows will be a welcome relief for the people of Bihar, especially with the approaching festival season. As October progresses, the likelihood of thunderstorms will decrease, and the state will experience clearer skies and cooler temperatures.

As Bihar braces for another round of heavy rainfall, it is important for residents to stay alert and prepared. The ongoing showers, combined with winds and the possibility of flooding in some regions, could make the next few days challenging. With weather alerts issued for multiple districts, including red and orange alerts for areas in North and South Bihar, it is vital for people to follow the guidelines set by local authorities.

Though the rain brings some relief from the heat, it also poses risks, especially in terms of infrastructure and daily routines. Patna, along with several other districts, is likely to face disruptions due to waterlogging, strong winds, and traffic delays. With rainfall expected to continue until at least October 7, Bihar will have to weather through these turbulent conditions before a respite is seen in the coming weeks. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the rain continues to affect the region.
