Bihar Weather Update Today: Severe Rainfall and Storms Expected Across 26 Districts, IMD Issues Alert

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The monsoon season has been active in Bihar for the past 8 days, but rainfall has not been as widespread or intense as anticipated. According to the Patna Meteorological Center, weather conditions are expected to change over the coming week, with an increase in rainfall activity. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for thunderstorms and heavy rains across various parts of the state.

Monsoon Delays: Why Bihar Is Seeing Less Rain

Bihar, which typically experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon, has been grappling with delays in the expected downpour. While the monsoon entered the region eight days ago, the intensity of rain has been minimal, especially in cities like Patna and Nalanda. The delay in rainfall is attributed to various atmospheric conditions, including the lack of moisture in the region, as well as fluctuations in wind patterns.

Meteorologists had initially expected the rain to intensify quickly after the onset of the monsoon, but due to slower cloud formation, rainfall activity has been limited. The situation, however, is expected to change soon, as weather forecasts predict significant rainfall in the upcoming week.

IMD’s Warning: Storms and Heavy Rains to Hit 26 Districts

The IMD has issued a weather warning for 26 districts of Bihar, where heavy rainfall, coupled with thunderstorms, is expected to cause significant disruptions. The districts at high risk of experiencing these severe weather conditions include Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and many others.

Weather experts predict that heavy rains could lead to waterlogging, landslides in hilly regions, and disruption of normal life. The wind speeds could also escalate to 50-60 km/h, accompanied by lightning and thunder. The IMD has advised the public to stay indoors during the peak hours of the storm and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.

Impact of the Monsoon on Daily Life

As Bihar braces for another phase of heavy rainfall, the residents in various parts of the state are concerned about the possible impact on their daily lives. The previous instances of heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in many districts, leading to property damage, disrupted transportation, and loss of crops in rural areas.

With the ongoing monsoon, farmers are particularly worried about their crops, especially in regions like Nalanda, Gaya, and Bhagalpur, where agriculture is the primary livelihood. Continuous rainfall can lead to crop damage, soil erosion, and waterlogging, hampering the agricultural cycle.

Moreover, cities like Patna, which have been experiencing urban flooding in recent years, are at a heightened risk of waterlogging on the streets, making commuting difficult and putting daily activities at risk. Traffic congestion is expected to increase, and waterlogging could disrupt power supply, as well as communication networks in some areas.

Key Areas to Watch: Heavy Rains in Patna and Nalanda

Patna, the state capital, is expected to witness heavy rainfall, and residents are urged to stay alert. The city’s infrastructure, which struggles to cope with heavy rains, could face challenges with water drainage and flood control. Schools and colleges in the region may also experience closures, depending on the severity of the rain and winds.

Nalanda, a historically significant district, is expected to experience similar rainfall, and areas in the hilly terrains might witness landslides. Local authorities have been put on high alert to monitor any hazardous situations, especially in rural and remote areas.

The IMD forecast also suggests that other districts, including Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and Gaya, will be affected by heavy rainfall, which may lead to an increased risk of flooding. Urban flooding, combined with thunderstorms, could further aggravate the situation, making it imperative for local authorities to take proactive measures.

Precautionary Measures: Staying Safe During Storms

The IMD has outlined several safety measures for residents to follow to stay safe during the predicted storm and heavy rains:

  1. Avoid Traveling: People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the stormy period. If travel is unavoidable, it is important to carry an emergency kit, including food, water, and first aid supplies.

  2. Secure Outdoor Items: Loose outdoor objects such as iron sheets, trees, or construction materials should be secured to prevent them from being blown away by high winds.

  3. Stay Indoors: It is safest to remain indoors, especially during the thunderstorm. Do not take shelter near windows or doors, and avoid using electrical appliances during lightning.

  4. Alert Local Authorities: If you live in a flood-prone area or near hilly terrains, keep in touch with local authorities and follow their updates. Be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

  5. Prepare for Flooding: Keep your home’s drainage systems clean and check if any potential flood risks exist. Move valuable items to higher ground to avoid water damage.

IMD’s Long-Term Forecast for Bihar

The weather forecast for the upcoming week indicates that Bihar will experience significant rainfall, especially towards the weekend. This would help mitigate the delays in the monsoon and may also bring much-needed relief to parched regions. However, the risk of thunderstorms and strong winds will persist, with the possibility of further alerts in the coming days.

Experts predict that the rains will peak during the last week of June, which will help improve water levels in reservoirs and recharge groundwater supplies in agricultural regions.

Bihar is heading into a crucial phase of its monsoon season, with heavy rains and storms expected to affect 26 districts, including major cities like Patna and Nalanda. While the initial days of the monsoon have been underwhelming, the coming week promises a significant change in weather conditions. The IMD’s warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and rainfall has put local authorities and residents on high alert.

As the weather worsens, it is essential for the people of Bihar to stay prepared, follow safety guidelines, and be cautious during this stormy period. Farmers, city dwellers, and government agencies will need to collaborate to mitigate the impact of the upcoming weather, ensuring that the situation does not escalate into a full-scale disaster.
