KKN Gurugram Desk | After a brief spell of heat, Bihar is expected to experience widespread rainfall starting Tuesday, June 17, as the monsoon system gains momentum across the state. According to the latest weather updates, temperatures have already begun to decline across most regions, bringing relief to residents after days of scorching heat.

Only Three Districts Cross 40°C on Sunday

Compared to Saturday, where several parts of Bihar reeled under extreme heat, Sunday saw a significant dip in temperature. Only three districts recorded temperatures above 40°C — a notable improvement attributed to cloud cover and pre-monsoon activities.

This weather shift marks the onset of an active monsoon phase in the region, with meteorological models predicting strong rain spells across all 38 districts of Bihar over the coming days.

Key Highlights:

  • Monsoon likely to become fully active across Bihar from June 17, 2025.

  • Only three districts reported temperatures above 40°C on June 15.

  • Heavy to moderate rainfall expected statewide, including in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur.

  • Relief for farmers and urban dwellers amid water shortages and delayed sowing.

Monsoon 2025: A Welcome Respite for Bihar

With much of North and Central India already witnessing heavy rains, Bihar’s monsoon arrival is slightly delayed this year. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) now forecasts consistent rainfall activity from June 17 onward, thanks to the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over Eastern India.

This shift is not only expected to cool down the atmosphere but also kickstart the agricultural season, especially in rain-fed areas dependent on early sowing.

According to local weather agencies, rainfall intensity will gradually increase between June 17 and June 20, with isolated areas potentially receiving thunderstorms and lightning as well.

Temperature Trends Across Bihar (June 15, 2025)

Here’s a quick overview of the maximum temperatures recorded on Sunday:

  • Patna: 38.6°C

  • Gaya: 39.2°C

  • Aurangabad: 40.4°C

  • Nawada: 40.1°C

  • Buxar: 39.5°C

  • Purnia: 37.8°C

  • Muzaffarpur: 38.2°C

The data suggests that Aurangabad, Nawada, and one other district crossed the 40°C mark, while the majority of the state saw temperatures hovering in the upper 30s.

With cloud formation and wind pattern changes, most districts are expected to experience a further drop in daytime temperatures by Tuesday.

Agricultural Implications: Farmers Await the First Downpour

This upcoming rainfall window is crucial for Bihar’s agrarian economy, especially for farmers who rely on monsoon rains for paddy cultivation. Due to the delayed onset, sowing activities in several districts had been postponed, increasing concerns among the farming community.

The Department of Agriculture has advised farmers to prepare their fields and seed stock, anticipating that rainfall between June 17–25 will provide adequate soil moisture for sowing.

Water scarcity had also become an issue in various districts, particularly in South Bihar, where tube wells and ponds had started to dry up due to the prolonged heatwave.

Urban Impact: Relief from Heat and Pollution

In urban areas like Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur, residents have expressed relief over the drop in temperatures. Heatstroke cases had been on the rise over the past week, and hospitals in many districts had reported increased footfall due to dehydration and related illnesses.

Moreover, air quality levels are expected to improve with the arrival of rain, washing away dust and suspended particles that had accumulated due to dry winds and vehicle emissions.

However, city officials warn that drainage systems must be checked and cleaned in time, as the first heavy rains often lead to urban flooding and traffic disruption in low-lying areas.

Weather Forecast: What to Expect This Week

The IMD and local weather offices have released the following forecast for June 17–20:

  • June 17 (Tuesday): Light to moderate rainfall across all districts; thunderstorms likely in North Bihar.

  • June 18 (Wednesday): Heavy rain alert for Gaya, Rohtas, and adjoining regions.

  • June 19 (Thursday): Widespread rainfall expected, with temperature likely to dip below 35°C.

  • June 20 (Friday): Rain to continue with isolated intense showers in Seemanchal and Kosi zones.

Meteorologists also indicate the possibility of monsoon depression forming in the Bay of Bengal, which could intensify rainfall in the region during the weekend.

Preparedness Measures Underway

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued advisories to district administrations to remain alert. Emergency response teams and relief shelters are being prepped in flood-prone areas.

The Bihar State Electricity Board has also asked local units to ensure uninterrupted power supply during rain-induced load variations.

Schools and institutions have been advised to stay updated on daily weather bulletins, especially in areas prone to flash floods or waterlogging.

After enduring a prolonged spell of high temperatures, Bihar is finally set to welcome the monsoon, bringing not just relief from the heat but also hope for a timely and productive agricultural cycle.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas, and stay updated through official weather channels and local media.
