The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning across several districts in Bihar, with heavy rainfall predicted in parts of West Champaran and Kaimur. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning has been declared for many areas in South Bihar and the North-Eastern regions of the state.

This comes as monsoon activity continues to intensify in the region, bringing moderate to heavy rains across at least 36 districts of Bihar in the past 24 hours.

Heavy Rainfall Warning in West Champaran and Kaimur

The IMD has warned of isolated heavy showers in West Champaran and Kaimur districts today. Local authorities in these regions have been placed on high alert as waterlogging, low visibility, and possible disruption of transport services are expected due to heavy rainfall.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during peak rain hours. Farmers are also being urged to take precautions to protect standing crops from potential water damage.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alert Across Southern and North-Eastern Bihar

In addition to rainfall, a yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in the southern and north-eastern districts of Bihar. The warning indicates a potential threat to life and property, especially in rural areas where open field activity and poor lightning protection increase vulnerability.

The disaster management department has instructed district administrations to remain vigilant and to activate emergency response protocols where necessary. Citizens are advised to stay away from trees, electric poles, and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

Cloudy Skies and Rain Expected in Patna

The state capital, Patna, is expected to remain under dense cloud cover throughout the day, with intermittent rainfall likely. The city has already experienced light to moderate showers in the early morning hours, contributing to water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Meteorologists suggest that weather conditions in Patna will remain unstable over the next 48 hours, with a mix of overcast skies, scattered rain, and occasional thunder.

Current Monsoon Trend Across Bihar

The monsoon has become increasingly active over Bihar since the last week of June, marking a shift from the earlier dry spell. As per the latest Bihar weather update, widespread rainfall has been reported in several districts, including:

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Gaya

  • Bhagalpur

  • Nalanda

  • Purnea

  • Siwan

  • Madhubani

  • Rohtas

  • Aurangabad

  • Buxar

With the advancing monsoon trough line, more rainfall is expected in the coming days, especially in central and northern Bihar.

Lightning-Related Casualties: A Recurring Monsoon Concern

Thunderstorm-related deaths have become an alarming issue in Bihar during monsoon months. Every year, lightning strikes claim dozens of lives, especially among farmers, construction workers, and those involved in outdoor labor.

According to disaster response officials, preventive awareness and timely weather updates can significantly reduce casualties. Villagers are urged to heed lightning alerts and avoid open fields during active weather warnings.

Precautionary Measures and Government Response

The Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) has issued guidelines to all district collectors to ensure public safety. These include:

  • Ensuring proper drainage systems are functioning

  • Temporary closure of schools in vulnerable areas (if required)

  • Public announcements via loudspeakers in rural areas

  • Readiness of flood control teams and emergency shelters

  • Dissemination of lightning safety guidelines in local languages

Authorities have also advised the public to stay connected with official weather updates via mobile alerts and government apps.

IMD’s Forecast for Next 72 Hours

According to the IMD’s Bihar forecast, the next 2–3 days will witness:

  • Moderate to heavy rainfall in central and northern Bihar

  • Scattered thunderstorms in southern districts

  • Rising humidity levels and temporary drops in temperature

  • Possible flooding in low-lying or river-adjacent areas

Meteorologists are monitoring the movement of the monsoon trough and any possible formation of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, which could enhance rainfall in the eastern part of the state.

Why This Weather Pattern Matters

The ongoing monsoon activity is crucial for Bihar’s predominantly agrarian economy. Timely and well-distributed rainfall supports paddy cultivation, which is a major crop in the region. However, excessive or poorly timed rains can result in crop loss, waterlogging, and infrastructural damage.

Analysts believe that this year’s monsoon could be erratic, with periods of excess rain followed by dry gaps. Farmers are being advised to remain updated with regional agri-weather bulletins and adapt sowing schedules accordingly.

With rainfall intensifying and thunderstorms looming, Bihar is likely to experience several days of unstable weather. Citizens are urged to stay alert, prioritize safety, and follow official advisories. The state administration is on high alert and prepared to respond to any emergency situations that may arise due to extreme weather conditions.
