Bihar Weather Alert: Heat Wave Troubles Continue as Rain Forecast for September 29 Raises Durga Puja Concerns

Published on

Bihar has been grappling with intense heat and humidity over the past several days, causing significant distress to residents across the state. The maximum temperatures have soared to 34-36 degrees Celsius in most districts, while nighttime temperatures have remained uncomfortably high at 27-29 degrees Celsius. The combination of high temperatures and humidity levels exceeding 80% has created oppressive conditions, leaving people struggling with the sweltering weather.

In cities like Patna, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur, residents have been experiencing particularly challenging conditions. The humidity has made the actual temperature feel much higher, with heat index values reaching dangerous levels. People have been forced to stay indoors during peak hours, while those working outdoors have faced severe health risks from the extreme weather.

Rain Forecast for September 29: Relief or Challenge?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts indicating that Bihar is likely to receive rainfall on September 29, 2025. The forecast suggests light to moderate rainfall across several districts, with possibilities of thunderstorms and lightning in northern and eastern parts of the state. This precipitation is expected to be caused by a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal.

While the rain promises much-needed relief from the oppressive heat, it comes with its own set of challenges. Wind speeds may reach 30-50 kilometers per hour, and there are warnings of thunder and lightning activity. The meteorological department has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts, indicating that residents should remain vigilant.

Impact on Durga Puja Celebrations

The weather situation poses significant concerns for Durga Puja celebrations, which began on September 28, 2025 (Shashthi) and will continue until October 2, 2025 (Vijayadashami). The festival is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across Bihar, particularly in cities like Patna, where elaborate pandals have been constructed with themes ranging from replicas of Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir to various cultural motifs.

The potential rainfall on September 29, which coincides with Maha Saptami, could create several challenges for festival organizers and devotees. Waterlogging in streets and around pandal areas may hamper the movement of crowds. The high humidity combined with potential rain could make outdoor celebrations uncomfortable for visitors.

Pandal Preparations and Precautionary Measures

Festival organizers have been preparing for potential weather disruptions. Many pandal committees have installed waterproofing measures and drainage systems to handle possible rainwater accumulation. The construction of some pandals has been expedited to ensure they can withstand strong winds and rainfall.

In Patna, major pandals at locations like Dak Bungalow Chauraha, Anandpuri, and Sampatchak have incorporated weather-resistant designs. Organizers are coordinating with local authorities to ensure adequate crowd management if weather conditions become challenging.

Health and Safety Concerns

The extreme heat conditions prior to the expected rainfall have already put a strain on public health. Hospitals have reported increased cases of heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heat exhaustion. The sudden change from intense heat to heavy rainfall could create additional health challenges.

Authorities have advised people to remain hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, and take precautions against lightning during thunderstorms. Emergency services have been placed on alert to handle any weather-related incidents during the festival period.

Agricultural and Economic Impact

The weather pattern has mixed implications for Bihar’s agricultural sector. While the excessive heat has stressed crops, the expected rainfall could provide relief to farmers dealing with water scarcity. However, if the rain becomes too heavy, it could damage standing crops and create flooding in low-lying agricultural areas.

The festival economy, which typically sees a surge during Durga Puja, may face challenges if weather conditions deter people from venturing out for shopping and celebrations. Market vendors and small businesses that depend on festival crowds are closely monitoring the weather situation.

Weather Predictions for Coming Days

According to meteorological forecasts, the weather pattern is expected to remain active through early October. While September 29 is likely to see significant rainfall, the pattern may continue intermittently during the festival period. Temperatures are expected to drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius following the rainfall, providing some relief from the oppressive heat.

The monsoon withdrawal, which has been delayed this year, is contributing to the extended period of humid conditions. Weather experts suggest that the low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal will continue to influence Bihar’s weather for the next few days.

Bihar’s weather situation presents a complex scenario where much-needed relief from extreme heat comes with the potential for disrupting one of the state’s most important festivals. While rainfall on September 29 will provide respite from the oppressive temperatures, festival organizers and authorities must remain prepared for weather-related challenges during Durga Puja celebrations.

Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates, take necessary precautions, and plan their festival activities accordingly. Despite the weather challenges, the spirit of Durga Puja remains strong across Bihar, with communities adapting to ensure safe and successful celebrations.
