Weather Forecast and Temperature Rise
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation over central India and adjoining Odisha is influencing the weather patterns in Bihar. This system is drawing in hot and dry westerly winds, replacing the previously prevailing easterlies. As a result, maximum temperatures are projected to rise by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
From May 10 to May 16, many districts, including Patna, are expected to record maximum temperatures ranging between 40°C and 42°C. On May 7, Dehri-on-Sone registered the highest temperature in the state at 38.8°C, indicating the onset of the heatwave.
Yellow Alert and Affected Regions
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for hot and dry weather conditions across northwest, north-central, southwest, and southeast Bihar from May 9 to May 13. Residents in these regions are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Health Advisory and Precautions
With the anticipated rise in temperatures, health experts recommend the following precautions:
-
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
-
Avoid direct exposure to sunlight, especially during peak hours.
-
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothes.
-
Use hats or umbrellas when outdoors.
-
Keep homes well-ventilated and cool.
Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Recent Weather Observations
While most parts of Bihar remained dry, light rainfall was reported in some areas over the past 24 hours. Bihar Sharif recorded 7.0 mm of rainfall, providing brief relief amid otherwise dry conditions.
As Bihar braces for an intense heatwave, residents are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and adhere to health advisories issued by authorities. Taking proactive measures can help mitigate the adverse effects of the soaring temperatures.
