Airtel Users: Rising Costs as Telecom Companies Subtly Increase Charges

Published on

Telecom companies are gradually increasing the financial burden on users without officially hiking prices. They are adopting a strategy where cheaper recharge plans are being discontinued, leaving only the more expensive options available. Following this trend, Airtel has recently discontinued its popular ₹189 prepaid plan. The cheapest recharge option now offered by the company is ₹199. This means that users will now have to pay at least ₹10 more for the same services.

Airtel’s Discontinuation of the ₹189 Plan

Airtel’s decision to remove the ₹189 plan is a significant blow to users who preferred it for their limited data and calling needs. The ₹189 plan previously offered 1GB of high-speed data, unlimited local and STD calls, and 300 SMS. Its validity was 21 days, which made it an ideal option for users with moderate phone usage. However, Airtel has now completely removed this plan from its website and app, making it unavailable for users looking for a more affordable option.

New ₹199 Plan: More Data and Benefits

Now, Airtel’s ₹199 plan has become the new entry-level recharge option. This plan offers users 2GB of data, unlimited calling, and 100 SMS per day. For just ₹10 more, users get double the data and 28 days of validity. This new plan could be a better deal for people who need more data or a longer validity period. However, for those who only need basic services, the removal of the ₹189 plan may be disappointing.

Impact on Budget-Conscious Users

While the ₹199 plan offers more benefits, it might not suit everyone. If you are someone with minimal data needs and primarily use your phone for basic calls and messages, the discontinuation of the ₹189 plan could be frustrating. The new plan might feel like an unnecessary expense for users who don’t require the extra data and features.

Airtel’s Strategy in the Telecom Sector

Airtel’s move is seen as a strategic decision in response to increasing network infrastructure costs and other operational expenses. This shift towards more expensive plans reflects the changing dynamics in the telecom sector, where companies are looking to balance profitability and service expansion. However, for the average consumer, this means that affordable mobile recharge plans are slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Jio’s Competing Plans

Meanwhile, competitors like Reliance Jio are offering their own competitive plans. For instance, Jio’s ₹3999 plan provides 2.5GB of daily data, unlimited calling, 100 SMS per day, and 90 days of JioHotstar Mobile/TV subscription. Additionally, this plan includes 50GB of JioAICloud storage and unlimited 5G data. Another plan, priced at ₹3599, offers similar benefits, including 2.5GB of daily data, free calling, 100 SMS, and access to 5G services along with a 90-day Hotstar Mobile subscription.

As Airtel moves away from its more affordable options, users may need to reconsider their mobile recharge choices. While some may find the new ₹199 plan more appealing due to the extra data and extended validity, others who require fewer services may feel the pinch of the price increase. With the telecom sector evolving, this subtle shift in pricing strategies is becoming a trend, and consumers may need to adapt to the new landscape of mobile recharges.
