KKN Gurugram Desk | To facilitate ongoing redevelopment at New Delhi Railway Station, the Railway Board has commenced a phased transfer of trains to nearby terminals. This move aims to reduce congestion and streamline operations during construction. In the first phase, six key trains have been rerouted to Anand Vihar Terminal, Old Delhi, and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations, paving the way for extensive renovation that includes a multimodal transport hub and office block demolition.

 Why Are Trains Being Shifted?

  • Redevelopment of New Delhi Station is underway, linked to the proposed Paharganj multimodal transport hub.

  • To accommodate construction, passenger traffic must be reduced—–railway officials say rerouting trains is a strategic necessity.

  • New temporary offices will be constructed at Paharganj for staff relocated from New Delhi station before demolition begins in March 2026.

  • The redevelopment is expected to take 45 months, requiring phased execution with minimal disruption.

Phase One Transfers: Six Trains Rerouted

The Director (Coaching) of the Railway Board, Sanjay R. Neelam, has approved the transfer and mandated stations to alert the public about adjusted departure and arrival points.

Trains Shifted to Anand Vihar Terminal:

  1. 12801 Puri–New Delhi Express

    • Original departure: 04:00 from New Delhi

    • Now departs Anand Vihar at 03:50 hrs

  2. 12802 New Delhi–Puri Express

    • Original departure: 22:40 from New Delhi

    • Now departs Anand Vihar at 22:50 hrs

  3. 12523 New Jalpaiguri–New Delhi Express

    • Departure time: 12:00 hrs, now from Anand Vihar at 11:55 hrs

  4. 12524 New Delhi–New Jalpaiguri Express

    • Departs at 15:10, starting from Anand Vihar at 15:20 hrs

Trains Shifted to Old Delhi (Delhi Junction):

  1. 14681 New Delhi–Jalandhar City Express

    • Original departure: 14:45 hrs

    • Shifted to Delhi Junction with departure time 14:35 hrs

  2. 14682 Jalandhar City–New Delhi Express

    • Departing Delhi Junction at 13:35 hrs instead of New Delhi

Trains Shifted to Hazrat Nizamuddin Station:

  1. 22209 Mumbai–New Delhi Express

    • Now originates from Hazrat Nizamuddin at 15:50 hrs

  2. 22210 New Delhi–Mumbai Express

    • Now departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin at 22:20 hrs

Additional Reroutes via Delhi Junction:

  • 14679 New Delhi–Amritsar Express and 14680 Amritsar–New Delhi Express will now run via Delhi Junction with minor adjusted timings.

  • 12203 Saharsa–Amritsar and 12204 Amritsar–Saharsa Express will also shift platforms to Delhi Junction.

Next Phases: Up to 30 Trains to be Moved

Railway authorities have confirmed that this is the first of four phases planned to shift up to 30 trains away from New Delhi station. The phases aim to progressively reduce passenger flow, enabling platform demolition and reconstruction activities.

Future phases will reassign more long-distance trains to:

  • Old Delhi Railway Station

  • Anand Vihar Terminal

  • Hazrat Nizamuddin Station

  • Smaller terminals like Shakur Basti and Safdarjung

Temporary Offices at Paharganj

To maintain administrative continuity, temporary office space is being prepared near the soon-to-be-built multimodal hub at Paharganj. All Railway Board staff offices currently at New Delhi station—important for day-to-day operations—will be relocated here before the demolition of existing office buildings.

Implications: What This Means for Passengers

  • Reduced Congestion at New Delhi station is expected once train rerouting completes.

  • Public Notification: Railway officials urge passengers to confirm their departure and arrival stations online or via SMS/email.

  • Connectivity Advisory: Additional shuttle buses and feeder services may run between major railheads and New Delhi station during the transition.

These keywords align with user search patterns: “New Delhi railway station reconstruction,” “Delhi train schedule change,” and “New Delhi station temporary closure.”

New Delhi Railway Station’s comprehensive redevelopment plan involves a multi-stage rerouting of trains, temporary staff office relocation, and eventual construction of a world-class multimodal transport hub at Paharganj.

Phase One has already rerouted six key trains to Anand Vihar, Old Delhi, and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations. Over the next few months, the number is expected to rise to 30 trains, aligning with the station’s 45-month renovation schedule.

For travelers, awareness of new departure and arrival stations is essential to avoid inconvenience. Meanwhile, the plan promises to ease congestion at one of India’s busiest railheads and set the stage for urban transport modernization in Delhi.
