KKN Gurugram Desk | Delhi witnessed a significant spell of pre-monsoon rainfall on Sunday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several parts of the national capital recorded moderate to heavy showers, with localized variations across different weather monitoring stations.

According to official IMD data, Delhi received 42 mm of rainfall by Sunday morning, with three key observatories reporting consistent precipitation. The Safdarjung station, which represents the official weather reading for Delhi, recorded 33.5 mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road received 32 mm, and Pusa station measured 27.5 mm.

Sunday Rainfall Brings Relief from Heatwave Conditions

The rain spell arrived just in time, as the capital had been experiencing above-normal temperatures and dry conditions over the past few weeks. The sudden change in weather helped cool down the city, improving air quality and bringing respite to residents.

 Rainfall Observations – June 15, 2025:

  • Delhi Overall: 42 mm

  • Safdarjung Observatory: 33.5 mm

  • Lodhi Road: 32 mm

  • Pusa: 27.5 mm

These figures are considered significant pre-monsoon activity, indicating the growing influence of the approaching Southwest Monsoon across Northern India.

More Rain Predicted Today: IMD Issues Alert

The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall on Monday, with possibilities of light to moderate showers across Delhi and NCR. Weather experts suggest that atmospheric instability caused by a western disturbance interacting with moist easterly winds is responsible for the current weather pattern.

 IMD Forecast Highlights:

  • Today’s Rainfall Probability: 60–70%

  • Expected Intensity: Light to moderate rain, localized heavy spells in some areas

  • Temperature Range: Max 33°C to 35°C | Min 25°C to 27°C

  • Humidity: Likely to remain above 80% during morning hours

Impact on Daily Life: Traffic, Commute, and Power Disruptions

While the showers brought relief from heat, they also caused minor disruptions in several parts of the city:

  • Traffic Slowdown: Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas like Minto Bridge, ITO, and parts of South Delhi.

  • Metro Services: Remained unaffected, but entry/exit congestion was noticed at some stations.

  • Power Cuts: Short-term outages were reported in residential areas such as Dwarka, Laxmi Nagar, and Vikaspuri.

Municipal teams have been alerted to manage urban drainage and pump operations in frequently flooded zones.

 Air Quality Improvement Post Rainfall

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI), which had hovered in the “moderate to poor” category last week, showed notable improvement post rainfall. The rain helped settle dust particles and pollutants, pushing the AQI into the “satisfactory” category by Sunday evening.

AQI Snapshot – Post Rain:

  • Pre-Rainfall AQI: 182 (Moderate)

  • Post-Rainfall AQI: 92 (Satisfactory)

  • PM2.5 Levels: Significantly reduced across monitoring stations

Experts recommend residents take advantage of the cleaner air for outdoor activities, but also caution that humidity may rise in the absence of consistent rain.

Monsoon 2025: On Track for Timely Arrival in Delhi

The Southwest Monsoon has already covered parts of Eastern India and is expected to advance into Delhi by the last week of June. The current pre-monsoon showers are viewed as early indicators of monsoonal movement.

Meteorologists suggest that if the current weather trend continues, Delhi could receive above-average rainfall during the first half of the monsoon season.

Delhi Weather Outlook for the Week Ahead

DateForecastMax Temp (°C)Rain Probability

June 17Partly cloudy35°C30%
June 18Humid, light showers36°C40%
June 19Clear to partly cloudy37°C10%

Delhi Police and the Municipal Corporation have issued public advisories:

  • Avoid underpasses during heavy rain

  • Plan commute in advance to avoid peak-hour congestion

  • Do not park vehicles near trees due to risk of limb falls during gusty winds

Emergency helpline numbers have been activated, and local weather bulletins will be updated every 3 hours via official IMD and Delhi Disaster Management portals.

Citizens React to the First Major Showers of the Season

Many Delhiites took to social media to share their reactions:

“Finally, some relief after weeks of unbearable heat! Thank you rain gods!” – @RekhaWrites
“Got stuck near India Gate but loved the smell of fresh earth. #RainyDelhi” – @AmitClicks
“Air feels so fresh today. Hope the rain continues for a while!” – @HealthOnWheels

The 42 mm rainfall recorded in Delhi on Sunday marked the city’s first significant pre-monsoon downpour of the year, cooling temperatures and improving air quality. With more rain expected today, residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts, prepare for waterlogging, and take necessary precautions during commutes.
