Who Will Be India’s Next Vice President? The Race Heats Up with New Contenders

Published on

The race for the next Vice President of India has become a topic of intense political discussions. This follows the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons. Since then, the position has remained vacant, sparking speculation across the political spectrum about who might fill this important role. Many names have been circulating, but the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has begun preparations to formally announce their candidate.

NDA’s Strategy for the Vice Presidential Election

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has officially stepped up preparations for the election of India’s next Vice President. On Thursday, a key meeting was held in the Parliament House complex, where it was decided that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda would be entrusted with the authority to select the candidate. After the meeting, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the decision had been made unanimously. The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, included significant political figures such as Home Minister Amit Shah, JD(U) leader Lalan Singh, Shrikant Shinde from the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, and Chirag Paswan from the LJP (Ram Vilas).

The position of Vice President has been vacant since Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21. Political circles have been buzzing with speculations over who will succeed him. Several names have emerged in the race, but the BJP had previously stunned everyone by nominating Dhankhar for the position, and many are waiting to see if they will do the same this time around.

Potential Candidates from the NDA

Manoj Sinha

One of the most discussed names is that of Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. A senior BJP leader and former Minister of State for Railways, Sinha has recently completed a five-year term. He is credited with bringing stability to the region following the abrogation of Article 370. Despite the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, his tenure is viewed positively. His close relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his steady leadership in Jammu and Kashmir strengthen his candidacy.

VK Saxena

VK Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, is another strong contender for the position of Vice President. Having come from a corporate background, Saxena has made several significant administrative decisions while in office. He has been instrumental in countering the Delhi government’s policies, especially against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His loyalty to the central government and active involvement in politics has made him a prominent figure in recent discussions, with many political observers suggesting that he could be entrusted with an even more significant role.

Nitish Kumar

The name of Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also been gaining traction. There is increasing speculation that he could be a contender for the Vice President’s position. However, these discussions remain unconfirmed, and several concerns have been raised regarding his health in recent days. Some allies of the NDA believe that Nitish Kumar may step down as Chief Minister and take up a national political role, thus allowing for fresh leadership within his party. Former JD(U) leader Upendra Kushwaha and other party members have hinted that Kumar may be willing to hand over leadership to the next generation.

Harivansh Narayan Singh

Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and a senior JD(U) leader, is another name that has been mentioned in discussions. Having held the position since 2020, Singh is regarded as a trustworthy and experienced political figure. He has managed to maintain a balanced approach in the Rajya Sabha, working harmoniously with both the government and opposition. His credibility and experience in parliamentary matters have made him a favorite candidate for the Vice President’s post.

Key Factors in Choosing the Next Vice President

Political analysts believe that the NDA will carefully consider several factors before finalizing their candidate. These factors include political balance, social representation, and experience. It is expected that the ruling alliance will choose someone who aligns with the party’s vision and can represent diverse interests. The selection of the Vice President will play a crucial role in shaping the government’s future political strategies, especially as the next presidential election approaches.

All eyes are on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will likely have the final say in this decision. As the NDA consolidates its position, the opposition may also begin to deliberate on their potential candidates, which will undoubtedly make for a competitive race. While the NDA holds a clear majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the opposition’s candidate could make things more interesting, adding another layer of complexity to the election.

What Lies Ahead for the Vice Presidential Election?

The next Vice President of India will play an important role in the country’s political landscape. In addition to representing the country at the international level, the Vice President is responsible for presiding over the Rajya Sabha. The candidate chosen for this role must be someone who commands respect across political lines and has a deep understanding of parliamentary procedures.

Given the current political climate, the selection process for the Vice President’s post has become a subject of intense scrutiny. The political calculations of the ruling NDA and opposition parties will play a key role in shaping the final outcome. The NDA’s candidate will have the advantage of their parliamentary majority, but the opposition will look to leverage any opportunity to challenge the ruling alliance.

As the election date draws closer, the political landscape will become even more dynamic. The selection of the next Vice President will not only reflect the priorities of the NDA but will also serve as a signal to the country about the government’s broader political strategy.

The upcoming Vice Presidential election in India has already sparked intense debate and speculation. With several prominent political figures vying for the position, the selection of the next Vice President will be a significant moment in the country’s political history. As the NDA finalizes its candidate, political observers will closely follow the developments, eager to see who will step into the shoes of Jagdeep Dhankhar.

While the ruling party seems to have a clear advantage, the race is far from over. The opposition is expected to challenge the NDA’s candidate, ensuring a competitive and exciting election. As we move closer to the election date, all eyes will be on the final decision, which will shape the political future of the country. The next Vice President of India will not only be a figurehead but will also play a key role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the country’s democratic processes.
