SCO Summit 2025: Rajnath Singh Shares Positive News on India-China Relations

Published on

In a significant development at the SCO Summit 2025, India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, shared encouraging news regarding India-China relations. During the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao, China, Singh confirmed that after six years of hiatus, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will be resuming. The announcement came following constructive discussions between India and China on the issue.

This meeting is part of a broader diplomatic effort between the two countries to resolve long-standing issues and improve bilateral ties. In his message shared on social media, Singh highlighted the positive outcome of the dialogue with China’s Defence Minister, Admiral Dong Jun.

India and China Engage in Positive Talks at SCO Defence Ministers’ Meet

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Qingdao, a major port city in China, where he met with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun. The key highlight of this engagement was the breakthrough on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been suspended for almost six years due to various diplomatic and logistical issues. The two countries reached a consensus on resuming the pilgrimage, which is an important spiritual journey for many Indians, especially those from the Hindu community.

In a Twitter post, Rajnath Singh stated, “During the meeting of SCO Defence Ministers in Qingdao, I had a constructive and forward-looking discussion with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun. We exchanged creative and visionary thoughts on bilateral relations. I am pleased to announce that after nearly six years, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will resume.”

Resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: A Symbol of India-China Cooperation

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a revered pilgrimage to the Mount Kailash in Tibet, is one of the most sacred religious journeys for Hindus. However, the pilgrimage had been suspended in recent years due to strained diplomatic relations between India and China, as well as logistical difficulties. The announcement of its resumption marks a significant thaw in India-China relations, indicating a positive shift towards cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The resumption of the pilgrimage is seen as a major diplomatic achievement for India, especially in the context of SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization), which focuses on regional security, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange among its member states. The willingness of both nations to engage in meaningful dialogue and resolve this issue is being viewed as a constructive step towards enhancing bilateral ties between India and China.

Rajnath Singh’s Engagements with Other SCO Members

In addition to his discussions with China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also held fruitful talks with the defence ministers of Russia and Belarus. These bilateral meetings focused on various security challenges in the region, along with strengthening defence cooperation.

On his interactions with the Belarusian Defence Minister, Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin, Singh expressed satisfaction with the talks, stating that they discussed regional challenges and security threats while also emphasizing the importance of defence cooperation between the two countries. Singh also met with Russian Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov, where the focus was on long-term defence collaboration between India and Russia.

India and Russia have a longstanding and comprehensive defence partnership, which is guided through the IRIGC-M and MTC (Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation) mechanism. The discussions during these meetings underscored the shared commitment to deepening defence relations and tackling regional security challenges together.

Defence Cooperation Between India, Russia, and Belarus

The ongoing discussions between India, Russia, and Belarus highlight the strategic importance of these relationships. For India, Russia remains a key ally in the defence sector, with the two nations cooperating on a range of military technology, arms supply, and joint training programs. In recent years, this partnership has only strengthened, and it continues to play a pivotal role in India’s defence strategy.

Russia has been a longstanding supplier of defence equipment to India, and the two countries maintain close ties through joint military exercises, defence production, and sharing intelligence. This relationship is crucial for both countries, as they seek to enhance their military capabilities in the face of emerging global security challenges.

On the other hand, Belarus, a key player in the Eastern European region, is also strengthening its defence ties with India. While Belarus may not have the same scale of military collaboration as Russia, its partnership with India is increasingly important in the context of regional security and defence technology exchange.

Importance of the SCO Summit in Shaping India’s Defence Diplomacy

The SCO Summit 2025 provides a crucial platform for India to engage with its neighbours and other member states on defence, security, and economic cooperation. As the world grapples with new security challenges, the SCO plays a vital role in shaping the regional security architecture. India’s participation in this summit underscores its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with China, Russia, and other member nations, all while addressing key regional concerns.

The SCO summit also offers an opportunity for India to showcase its growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in terms of defence and security cooperation. The discussions that take place during such summits have the potential to drive significant policy changes and foster deeper collaboration on critical issues.

The Road Ahead for India-China Relations

While the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a positive sign, there are still many hurdles to overcome in the India-China relationship, especially regarding border tensions and trade disputes. The Doklam standoff, Galwan Valley clash, and other border issues have strained the relationship in recent years. However, as both countries move forward with constructive dialogue, there is hope for a more stable and cooperative future.

The upcoming meetings between leaders from both countries could pave the way for further breakthroughs in addressing these issues. The hope is that mutual trust and communication will continue to strengthen, enabling the two nations to resolve their differences while maintaining regional peace and stability.

The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a symbol of the potential for India-China cooperation in areas that matter to both countries and their citizens. With the positive momentum from the SCO Summit 2025, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has sent a clear message that diplomacy and dialogue remain the best tools for resolving longstanding issues and building stronger bilateral relations.

As both India and China continue to engage in meaningful talks, the international community will be closely watching how the two nations handle their bilateral relationship in the coming months and years. The hope is that this positive development will lead to more constructive engagements between the two countries, benefiting not only their people but also contributing to regional stability.
