KKN Gurugram Desk | Israel’s cabinet has approved a historic ceasefire agreement with Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, with the involvement of U.S. officials. This deal aims to bring an end to the 15-month-long conflict that began on October 7, 2023, following Hamas’ attack on Israel.

The ceasefire, set to begin on Sunday, January 19, will last for 42 days in its first phase, facilitating the release of hostages and prisoners, and allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.

Key Highlights of the Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal

1. Duration and Start Date

The truce will last for 42 days, starting January 19, 2025.

2. Hostages Release

  • Hamas will release 33 hostages, including civilian women, children, elderly, and injured individuals.
  • The first group of hostages, including three Israeli women soldiers, will be released by Sunday evening.

  • No prisoners will be released before 4 PM (local time) on Sunday.

4. Mediation and Negotiation

Logistics of Hostage Release and Care

  • Three points have been established for the exchange: Kerem ShalomErez (border crossings), and Reim (east of Gaza).
  • Hostages will undergo medical and mental health evaluations upon release and will be transported to Israeli hospitals via helicopters or vehicles.

Military Adjustments in Gaza

Israeli Withdrawal from Populated Areas

  • Israeli forces will temporarily withdraw from densely populated areas of Gaza during the initial 42 days to facilitate the exchanges.
  • buffer zone of 800 meters will be maintained from Rafah in the south to Beit Hanun in the north.

Revised Defensive Plan

  • The Israeli military has implemented a revised defensive plan, strengthening security along the Gaza Strip border.
  • Displaced Palestinians will be allowed to return home via electronic checkpoints, equipped with cameras for monitoring.

Restrictions on Movement

  • Palestinians will not be permitted to return to areas where Israeli forces remain stationed or to regions near the Israel-Gaza border.
  • The full withdrawal of Israeli troops is contingent upon the release of all remaining hostages.

Significance of the Ceasefire Agreement

The ceasefire represents a pivotal step in addressing one of the longest conflicts in the region. While it provides immediate relief to civilians, challenges remain in ensuring long-term peace and stability.
