India’s Stand on the Dalai Lama’s Successor

Published on

India’s position on the legitimacy and process of determining the next Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, was made clear by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. The Indian government firmly stated that only the current Dalai Lama and the conventions he has established have the right to decide on the next incarnation of the revered Tibetan figure, not any external entity, particularly the Chinese government.

In a statement that subtly countered China’s claim to influence the selection of the next Dalai Lama, Rijiju, a practicing Buddhist, emphasized the importance of the Dalai Lama’s teachings and traditions in Tibetan Buddhism. He reaffirmed that the decision to determine the Dalai Lama’s successor rests solely with the institution of the Dalai Lama, following the established conventions and the wishes of the current spiritual leader.

Kiren Rijiju’s Assertion of India’s Stand

The Union Minister for Minorities, Kiren Rijiju, shared his views on this sensitive issue, which has gained attention amid ongoing concerns regarding China’s interference in Tibetan spiritual matters. Rijiju highlighted that “The Dalai Lama is the most important and defining institution for Buddhists,” and stressed that “all those who follow the Dalai Lama feel that the incarnation is to be decided by the established convention and as per the wish of the Dalai Lama himself. Nobody else has the right to decide it except him and the conventions in place.”

This statement is significant as it reinforces India’s long-standing position on Tibetan matters, which has consistently supported the autonomy of the Tibetan spiritual leadership in choosing their successor. The remark also aligns with India’s policy of offering refuge to the Dalai Lama and his followers, while China continues to assert its control over Tibet.

The Dalai Lama’s Statement on His Successor

In a statement released on July 2, 2025, the Dalai Lama, who will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 6, put to rest concerns surrounding his succession. The Dalai Lama affirmed that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue beyond his lifetime and that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, a key body in Tibetan Buddhism, will have the authority to recognize his future reincarnation. His words were a direct response to the increasing concerns about the Chinese government’s involvement in choosing his successor.

The Dalai Lama’s statement was widely interpreted as a clear rejection of China’s claims that it should have the authority to choose the next incarnation. In a statement made earlier, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, asserted that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama should follow the tradition of drawing lots from a golden urn, a process that China controls. According to the Chinese government, this policy aligns with their regulations on managing religious affairs and overseeing the reincarnation of Tibetan living Buddhas.

China’s Claim and India’s Counter

China’s response to the Dalai Lama’s comments was firm and assertive. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be managed by the Chinese authorities, further asserting its control over Tibetan religious practices. The claim from China is part of its broader efforts to maintain control over Tibet, which has been under Chinese occupation since the 1950s. The Chinese government’s insistence on controlling the reincarnation process is seen by many as a way to influence Tibetan Buddhism and diminish the spiritual and political influence of the Dalai Lama and his followers.

On the other hand, India’s stance, as reiterated by Kiren Rijiju, underlines the country’s unwavering support for the Tibetan people and their spiritual leadership. Rijiju’s comments mark a clear departure from China’s position and emphasize India’s commitment to Tibetan autonomy in spiritual matters. The Indian government has consistently supported the Dalai Lama’s right to choose his successor, and Rijiju’s statement further strengthens that position.

The Gaden Phodrang Trust’s Role in Succession

The Gaden Phodrang Trust, which manages the Dalai Lama’s affairs, will play a crucial role in recognizing the next Dalai Lama. This body has traditionally overseen the process of selecting the new Dalai Lama according to Tibetan Buddhist customs and religious doctrines. The Trust’s involvement ensures that the process remains rooted in Tibetan Buddhism’s spiritual and cultural heritage, rather than being subjected to external political influence, particularly from China.

The Dalai Lama’s statement has been received positively by his followers, who have long believed that only the Tibetan people and their spiritual leadership should have the right to decide on the next incarnation. The Gaden Phodrang Trust’s authority in this matter is widely respected within the Tibetan community, and the Dalai Lama’s endorsement of the Trust’s role in the succession process reaffirms the legitimacy of this body’s decision-making.

India’s Position in Tibetan Spiritual Affairs

India’s role in Tibetan spiritual matters is of great significance. The country has been a refuge for the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community since 1959, following the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet after the Chinese invasion. India’s support for Tibetans has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy, and the country has provided a safe haven for Tibetan refugees, preserving their culture, language, and religious practices.

The Indian government’s clear stance on the Dalai Lama’s succession issue is a continuation of this long-standing commitment. By reaffirming that only the Dalai Lama and the established Tibetan Buddhist conventions can decide the next incarnation, India not only upholds its moral responsibility to the Tibetan community but also sends a strong message to China about respecting the spiritual autonomy of the Tibetan people.

The International Implications of the Succession Debate

The debate surrounding the Dalai Lama’s successor has international implications, particularly in terms of the relationship between China and the global community. The Chinese government’s insistence on controlling the reincarnation process has raised concerns among human rights organizations and countries that support Tibet’s cultural and religious freedom.

India’s strong position on this issue has the potential to influence global opinion on Tibet and China’s policies. As a prominent player in international diplomacy and a supporter of Tibet’s autonomy, India’s stance provides a counterpoint to China’s growing influence in the region. By standing firm on the issue of the Dalai Lama’s succession, India is not only supporting Tibetans’ right to self-determination but also asserting its role as a leader in promoting religious freedom and human rights on the global stage.

The issue of the Dalai Lama’s successor is not merely a matter of political or diplomatic importance; it is a deeply spiritual issue for Tibetans and Buddhists around the world. The Dalai Lama’s legacy is one of peace, compassion, and spiritual leadership, and his succession must be determined in accordance with Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the will of the current Dalai Lama.

India’s support for the Dalai Lama’s position on this matter reinforces its commitment to the Tibetan cause and its long-standing relationship with the Tibetan people. As the world watches, the resolution of this issue will not only shape the future of Tibetan Buddhism but also influence the geopolitical dynamics in the region. The Dalai Lama’s statement and India’s unwavering support ensure that the spiritual autonomy of the Tibetan people remains a central tenet of global discussions on Tibet.
