Confirmed Train Tickets Hard to Find in Purvanchal

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The people of Purvanchal (Eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar) are facing a growing crisis in railway travel. Despite the Indian Railways’ ongoing infrastructure development projects, confirmed tickets remain a distant dream for thousands of passengers. Gorakhpur Junction, a major railway hub in North India, is struggling to accommodate the heavy passenger rush, with demand far outpacing available train seats.

Every day, nearly 100,000 passengers pass through Gorakhpur Junction. Yet, the station offers seating and berth capacity for only 72,000 travelers, leaving over 25,000 passengers stranded or forced into overcrowded coaches, many of them traveling without confirmed tickets.

Confirmed Tickets Unavailable on Trains to Delhi and Mumbai

Booking a confirmed train ticket from Gorakhpur to key destinations like Delhi and Mumbai has become next to impossible. Reservations are fully booked weeks in advance, and the waitlist numbers continue to soar, leaving passengers with little to no options.

Most express trains, including Sapt Kranti Express, Bihar Sampark Kranti, and Vaishali Express, are running at full capacity. General coaches are bursting at the seams, and passengers are forced to occupy toilets, pantry cars, and even climb through windows into overcrowded compartments.

Overcrowding Turns Dangerous: Risky Travel Becoming the Norm

Rail travel has now become not just inconvenient but dangerous. In recent days, authorities found 39 unauthorized passengers crammed into the pantry car of the Sapt Kranti Express, who had to be forcibly deboarded at Gorakhpur.

In trains like Gorakhdham Express, scenes of desperation have become common. When passengers fail to board through packed doors, they now resort to climbing through windows — a practice that poses serious safety risks.

“This is not a matter of choice. People are not sitting in toilets or pantry cars for fun — they are desperate,” said a daily passenger from Gorakhpur.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Here’s a snapshot of the current situation at Gorakhpur Junction:

  • Daily Footfall: 1,00,000+ passengers

  • Available Seats/Berths: Approx. 72,000

  • Deficit: 25,000–30,000 passengers without confirmed accommodation

  • Total Trains Originating Daily: 22 Express and 8 Passenger trains

Even 24 hours before departure, long queues are visible at booking counters and general compartments. The demand has far outstripped the supply — and that gap continues to grow.

Railway Infrastructure Development Not Keeping Pace with Demand

While the Indian Railways is actively working on track expansion and capacity enhancement, including the addition of double lines and new routes, the ground reality paints a different picture.

“The railway is progressing on paper, but passengers continue to suffer on the ground,” said a local activist who has been campaigning for more trains in the region.

Despite being one of the most populated zones, Purvanchal is seeing little increase in train frequency or coach capacity. Meanwhile, passenger traffic continues to rise, especially during weekends, holidays, and seasonal travel surges.

Why Is Purvanchal Facing a Train Crisis?

Several factors have contributed to the UP-East rail congestion:

  1. High Outmigration: Purvanchal sends a large number of migrants to metros like Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.

  2. Limited Train Services: Few new trains have been introduced despite a growing population.

  3. Unbalanced Seat Allocation: Quotas from stations like Gorakhpur are often inadequate for local demand.

  4. Inadequate General Coach Capacity: General compartments remain overcrowded with no expansion in space or service quality.

This creates a perfect storm, where passengers with confirmed tickets face uncertainty, and those without reservations have no safe alternatives.

Passengers Struggle Without Relief

The situation is particularly dire for:

  • Students and job seekers traveling for exams or interviews

  • Workers returning home during weekends or festivals

  • Elderly and women passengers unable to fight the crowd in general coaches

With confirmed ticket bookings often closed weeks in advance, the only remaining option is traveling in unsafe and unhygienic conditions. Passengers are often seen standing for hours or sitting near toilets — a serious compromise in both dignity and safety.

Railway Response: Yet to Match Ground Reality

The Railways has issued statements indicating efforts are underway to enhance track capacity and modernize stations. However, the reality remains that no new trains or additional coaches have been deployed in proportion to the growing demand from Gorakhpur and surrounding regions.

Additionally, digital reservation systems continue to crash during peak hours due to excessive demand, leaving passengers frustrated even before they reach the station.

Public Demand: More Trains, Transparent Quota System

Local leaders and passenger welfare associations have called on the Indian Railways to:

  • Introduce additional trains from Gorakhpur to Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata

  • Increase the number of AC and sleeper coaches in high-demand routes

  • Implement a transparent reservation quota favoring regional stations like Gorakhpur

  • Improve the infrastructure and amenities at the station to handle rising crowds

Until such steps are taken, the situation is likely to worsen, especially as festival seasons and competitive exam dates approach.

The Indian Railways may be digitizing, expanding, and transforming, but the struggle of the common passenger in Eastern Uttar Pradesh tells a story of neglect. The scenes from Gorakhpur Junction — with people sitting in pantry cars, hanging by doorways, and begging for confirmed tickets — serve as a harsh reminder that progress on paper must translate into real relief on the ground.

Until then, thousands will continue to travel in fear, discomfort, and frustration — victims of a system still playing catch-up with its people.
