KKN Gurugram Desk | Today, India and several countries across the globe observe Buddha Purnima 2025, a spiritually significant day that marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu according to Hindu beliefs. Falling on the Full Moon day of the Vaishakh month, this sacred occasion is revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions and is celebrated with deep devotion and peaceful reflection.
Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, Vaishakh Purnima, and Peepal Purnima, is one of the most significant religious festivals for followers of Buddhism and Hinduism. It commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Gautam Buddha after attaining enlightenment, and also marks the day he attained Nirvana at Kushinagar.
As per Hindu scriptures, Gautam Buddha is the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu, and his life and teachings form the cornerstone of Buddhist philosophy centered around non-violence, compassion, mindfulness, and spiritual awakening.
Purnima Tithi Begins: May 11 at 6:55 PM
Purnima Tithi Ends: May 12 at 7:22 PM
Buddha Purnima Puja Muhurat: May 12, from 11:51 AM to 12:45 PM
The date is calculated as per the lunar calendar, and since the full moon is visible on May 12 (Monday), today is being observed as Buddha Purnima 2025.
On this day, nearly 2587 years ago, Prince Siddhartha was born in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal) into a royal family. He left behind his palace, luxuries, and family at the age of 29 to seek the truth of life and liberation from suffering. After years of extreme austerity and meditation, he finally attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya on the night of Vaishakh Purnima.
Later in life, on this same date, Gautam Buddha entered Mahaparinirvana, marking his departure from the cycle of rebirth. Thus, this single day signifies birth, awakening, and liberation — the complete spiritual journey of Buddha.
The significance of Buddha Purnima lies in its symbolism of spiritual growth and self-realization. It is believed that worshiping Lord Buddha, Lord Vishnu, and Moon God (Chandra Dev) on this day brings inner peace, wisdom, and karmic purification.
Devotees across India and the world observe the following on this day:
Listening to Buddha’s teachings and sermons
Offering kheer (rice pudding), as it’s believed Buddha broke his fast with it after his enlightenment
Lighting candles and lamps to symbolize the victory of wisdom over ignorance
Participating in group meditations, charity, and ritual donations (daan)
Buddha Purnima is not limited to India alone. It is a global festival, celebrated with devotion in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Laos, and Tibet, among others.
In Bodh Gaya, thousands of monks, scholars, and tourists from around the world gather under the sacred Bodhi Tree, where Buddha attained enlightenment. Ceremonies include:
Recitation of Tripitaka scriptures
Ritual bathing of Buddha statues
Distribution of prasad (holy food)
Acts of kindness and charity
Peace marches and cultural programs
The UN recognizes Buddha Purnima as Vesak Day, acknowledging its spiritual and historical importance.
Devotees perform special rituals in Buddhist monasteries and homes across the world:
Cleaning the home and temple area
Placing an idol or image of Lord Buddha on a clean cloth or altar
Offering flowers, incense, candles, and fruits
Preparing and distributing kheer as prasad
Reading or listening to Dhammapada and Jataka Tales
Chanting “Om Mani Padme Hum” or Buddhist mantras
Observing fasts, meditation, and silence
Gautam Buddha’s teachings remain ever-relevant in today’s world filled with materialism, stress, and conflict. Here are five core teachings remembered and discussed during Buddha Purnima:
Four Noble Truths: Life involves suffering, the origin of suffering is desire, cessation of desire leads to liberation, and the Eightfold Path leads to the end of suffering.
The Middle Way: Avoiding extremes of indulgence and self-denial.
Eightfold Path: Right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.
Karma and Rebirth: One’s actions determine the quality of their future lives.
Compassion and Ahimsa: Universal love and non-violence towards all beings.
Charitable acts are considered especially auspicious on this day. People are encouraged to donate:
Water pots (jal kalash)
Umbrellas and fans
Sandals or slippers
Sattu, jaggery, clothes
Books or educational materials
These items are believed to help in acquiring merit (punya) and reduce suffering for others. Many Buddhist monks organize sanghas, peace talks, and community feeding programs.
In an age of technological distraction and mental unrest, Buddha Purnima serves as a reminder to pause, reflect, and seek balance. His emphasis on mindfulness (sati) and right thought is the basis of many modern therapies like mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
As climate change, inequality, and conflict dominate the headlines, this festival encourages people to adopt peace, tolerance, and empathy.
Buddha Purnima is not just a festival; it’s a spiritual awakening that unites millions around the world in their pursuit of truth, peace, and wisdom. Whether you observe it through prayers, meditation, charity, or self-reflection, this day offers an opportunity to connect with higher consciousness and the eternal teachings of Lord Buddha.
