KKN Gurugram Desk | In a deeply emotional moment, Pushkarraj Sabharwal, father of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, offered a heartfelt tribute to his son outside their residence in Powai, Mumbai, following the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport on June 12, 2025.

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was commanding the Air India London-bound flight that crashed minutes after departure, resulting in multiple casualties and sparking widespread mourning across India’s aviation community.

Air India Flight to London Crashes Minutes After Takeoff

The ill-fated flight, operating under the Air India international schedule, had taken off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London Heathrow. According to preliminary reports, the aircraft encountered a critical mechanical failure shortly after takeoff, forcing an emergency maneuver that ultimately led to a crash near the city’s outskirts.

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a seasoned pilot with over 18 years of flying experience, was in control of the aircraft. Despite best efforts to stabilize the flight, the aircraft could not be saved. The incident has been described as one of the most tragic aviation disasters in India in recent years.

Nation Mourns a Hero: Tributes Pour In for Captain Sabharwal

Following the crash, tributes have been pouring in from across the country for Captain Sabharwal, who is being hailed as a hero for his efforts to avoid further casualties by attempting to steer the aircraft away from populated areas during the final moments of the flight.

On June 17, as Captain Sabharwal’s mortal remains were brought to his residence in Mumbai, an atmosphere of grief surrounded the neighborhood. His father, Pushkarraj Sabharwal, stood outside their Powai home, visibly shattered but proud, saluting the memory of his son.

“He lived with dignity and died with honor. My son tried to save lives till his last breath,” he told the media with tears in his eyes.

Locals, colleagues from the aviation sector, and friends gathered at the site to pay their last respects, many of them saluting the coffin as it arrived draped in the national flag.

Who Was Captain Sumeet Sabharwal?

Captain Sabharwal was known among his peers as a dedicated and highly skilled pilot. Having completed his training in the early 2000s, he flew for multiple international carriers before joining Air India, where he became one of the airline’s most respected commanders.

Career Highlights:

  • 18+ years of commercial flying experience

  • Logged over 12,000 flying hours

  • Specialized in Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations

  • Known for mentoring junior pilots and trainees

He leaves behind his wife and two young children, along with a legacy of integrity, professionalism, and passion for aviation.

Crash Investigation Underway

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has launched a full-scale investigation into the Air India plane crash. Black box data from the aircraft has been recovered and sent for analysis.

Initial reports suggest a technical failure in the engine system shortly after takeoff. Air traffic control recordings reveal that Captain Sabharwal reported abnormal vibrations and a potential engine flameout, moments before losing communication.

“We are coordinating with Boeing and global aviation bodies to understand what went wrong,” a DGCA official confirmed.

Investigators are also examining maintenance logs, pre-flight checklists, and crew scheduling records to determine if any procedural lapses contributed to the tragedy.

Air India Issues Statement

Air India has issued a statement expressing deep regret and condolences to the families of all those affected, especially the crew members who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Captain Sumeet Sabharwal exemplified the highest standards of commitment and courage. His actions during the final moments of the flight were heroic. We are in contact with his family and providing all necessary support,” the statement read.

The airline has also temporarily grounded similar aircraft models pending inspection, as a precautionary safety measure.

Public Reaction and Aviation Safety Concerns

The crash has reignited debates around aviation safety in India, especially regarding aircraft maintenance and pilot fatigue. Several aviation experts have called for stricter regulatory oversight and improved aircraft maintenance protocols for international flights.

On social media, hashtags such as #CaptainSabharwal, #AirIndiaCrash, and #AviationSafetyIndia trended for hours as citizens, public figures, and celebrities paid tribute and demanded answers.

Tributes from the Aviation Community

Pilots’ associations, including the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) and the Federation of Indian Pilots, have honored Captain Sabharwal’s legacy. Many commercial pilots across India observed a moment of silence before takeoff the day after the crash.

“His actions may have prevented an even greater disaster. He will always be remembered as a guardian of the skies,” said a fellow Air India pilot.

Aviation schools and flying clubs across India have also planned to hold memorials in Captain Sabharwal’s honor.

Funeral and Last Rites

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal’s funeral is scheduled to take place on June 18 at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai, with full honors. The Maharashtra state government has announced that he will be posthumously honored for bravery and service.

The family has requested privacy but has thanked the public and the aviation fraternity for their overwhelming support.

As India mourns the tragic Air India crash near Ahmedabad, the name Captain Sumeet Sabharwal has come to symbolize bravery, duty, and sacrifice. In a time of great uncertainty, he remained calm under pressure, doing everything possible to protect the lives of those on board.

While the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, one fact remains undisputed: Captain Sabharwal died a hero. His legacy will inspire future generations of pilots, and his story will forever remain etched in the annals of Indian aviation.
