KKN Gurugram Desk | The 2025 Padma Shri Awards, announced on the eve of Republic Day, have once again highlighted India’s commitment to honoring the unsung heroes who have made remarkable contributions across diverse fields, including sports, social work, culture, and traditional arts. This year’s honorees reflect the rich tapestry of India’s heritage and the relentless efforts of individuals who strive to preserve and celebrate it.

Para-Archer Harvinder Singh: A Golden Legacy

Among the celebrated recipients is Harvinder Singh, fondly referred to as ‘Kaithal ka Eklavya.’ Singh etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian para-archer to win gold at the 2024 Paralympic Games. His resilience and determination have made him a symbol of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the country. His achievement is a testament to the growing recognition of para-sports in India and the nation’s commitment to inclusivity in sports.

Libia Lobo Sardesai: A Beacon of Social Change

Goa’s Libia Lobo Sardesai, a veteran social worker, was recognized for her role in the Indian freedom movement. Sardesai co-founded an underground radio station, ‘Voz da Liberdade’ (Voice of Freedom), which became a powerful medium to mobilize citizens against Portuguese rule. Her unwavering dedication to social justice and community welfare has left a lasting impact on the state and the nation.

Honoring the Guardians of Culture and Heritage

This year’s Padma Shri Awards also celebrate individuals who have worked tirelessly to preserve India’s traditional arts and culture:

  • Bhimavva Doddabalappa Shillekyaathra: At the age of 96, this puppeteer from Karnataka continues to preserve the ancient art of Togalu Gombeyaata, a form of shadow puppetry that has been performed for over 70 years. Her dedication has kept this traditional art form alive for future generations.
  • Velu Aasaan: A master craftsman from Tamil Nadu, Velu has spent over four decades conserving the Pariyar instrument tradition, ensuring its survival in modern times.
  • Parmar Lavjibhai Nagjibhai: A Tangaliya weaver from Gujarat, Lavjibhai has worked tirelessly to preserve the 700-year-old textile craft of the Dangasia community, bringing global attention to this intricate weaving technique.

Recognizing Literary and Conservation Efforts

The Padma Shri Awards also honored individuals contributing to literature, conservation, and education:

  • Jagdish Joshila: Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Joshila has been a torchbearer for Nimadi literature, working to preserve this regional literary heritage and promote it across the country.

Acknowledging Farmers’ Contributions

The agricultural sector was not overlooked, with recognition given to farmers who have made significant contributions:

  • Hariman Sharma: A farmer from Himachal Pradesh, Sharma has developed innovative farming techniques that have boosted productivity and inspired others in the region.
  • L Hangthing: A farmer from Nagaland, Hangthing has worked to promote sustainable farming practices, contributing to the preservation of the environment and the empowerment of local communities.

Global Recognition: Honoring International Contributors

Why the Padma Shri Matters

The Padma Shri Awards, instituted in 1954, are India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, celebrating individuals who have made exceptional contributions in their respective fields. Over the years, the awards have evolved to honor not just well-known figures but also unsung heroes whose work often goes unnoticed. This year’s list is a reflection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to recognizing the contributions of ordinary people making extraordinary impacts on society.

The honorees represent a diverse spectrum of fields, including arts, culture, literature, sports, social work, and conservation. Their achievements underscore the importance of preserving India’s cultural heritage, advancing social progress, and fostering global connections.
