KKN  Gurugram Desk | The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in collaboration with local law enforcement, has initiated the second phase of a significant demolition drive around Chandola Lake. This operation aims to remove over 8,000 unauthorized structures spanning approximately 2.5 lakh square meters, following the clearance of 1.5 lakh square meters in the first phase.

Background: Chandola Lake and Encroachments

Chandola Lake, a historic water reservoir in Ahmedabad, has witnessed substantial encroachments over the years. Unauthorized settlements, including makeshift homes and permanent structures, have proliferated along its banks, leading to environmental degradation and concerns over illegal activities.

Phase 2 Demolition Details

  • Scale of OperationThe current phase targets the removal of structures over 2.5 lakh square meters, surpassing the previous phase’s clearance.

  • DeploymentApproximately 3,000 police personnel and 25 State Reserve Police (SRP) companies are overseeing the operation to ensure law and order. Equipment UsedThe AMC has deployed 35 excavators and 15 JCB machines to expedite the demolition process.

Notices and Rehabilitation Efforts

Prior to the demolition, residents were notified through loudspeaker announcements, urging them to vacate the premises. The AMC has stated that individuals residing in the area before December 1, 2010, may be eligible for housing under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) scheme. Applications can be submitted at the Danilimda ward office.

Legal and Social Implications

The Gujarat High Court recently disposed of a petition filed by 58 residents concerning rehabilitation, directing them to approach the AMC under existing schemes. The court emphasized that the land in question is a notified water body, where construction is prohibited.

Broader Context

This demolition drive is part of a larger initiative by the AMC to reclaim public land and restore Chandola Lake’s ecological balance. The area had become a hub for unauthorized settlements, raising concerns about illegal activities and environmental degradation.
