The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, has definitively affirmed that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue after his death. In a major statement released on July 2, 2025, the Dalai Lama declared that his 600-year-old institution will persist, thus ending years of uncertainty surrounding its future. This announcement comes just a few days before the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday on July 6, 2025.

The 14th Dalai Lama, in his statement, emphasized that the decision to continue the Dalai Lama lineage was made in response to requests from Tibetan spiritual leaders, Buddhist communities globally, and notably, Tibetans living in Tibet. His confirmation marks a significant change in stance from earlier years when the Dalai Lama had voiced uncertainty regarding the continuation of the institution.

Dalai Lama’s Affirmation on the Continuation of the Institution

In his May 21, 2025 statement, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Dalai Lama responded to overwhelming appeals from various quarters, asserting:

“In accordance with all these requests, I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.”

This decision marks a pivotal shift from his earlier reservations about the future of the Dalai Lama institution. Previously, the Dalai Lama had mentioned that, when he turned 90, he would consult high-ranking Tibetan lamas, the Tibetan public, and other concerned Buddhists to reassess whether the Dalai Lama’s reincarnations should continue.

Since 1969, he had repeatedly expressed that the decision regarding the future of the institution should be left to the Tibetan people and Buddhist leaders, acknowledging that it would be a collective decision. However, due to continued appeals, especially from Tibetans within and outside China, the Dalai Lama has now made a clear declaration about the institution’s future.

Tibetans’ Role in the Dalai Lama’s Future

A particularly significant aspect of this announcement is the support from Tibetans living in Tibet. Despite Chinese restrictions on religious freedoms, Tibetans inside Tibet have sent numerous messages through unofficial channels, urging the Dalai Lama to continue the institution. The Dalai Lama himself acknowledged this support, saying:

“In particular, I have received messages through various channels from Tibetans in Tibet making the same appeal.”

This plea carries special weight because it comes from Tibetans living under Chinese rule, who face severe restrictions on religious expression. For years, Beijing has attempted to assert control over Tibetan Buddhist practices and the recognition of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, claiming that the Chinese government alone has the authority to identify the future Dalai Lama.

The Succession Process: The Role of the Gaden Phodrang Trust

The Dalai Lama also clarified the succession process for his position, asserting that the Gaden Phodrang Trust — a key institution linked to the Dalai Lama’s lineage — holds exclusive authority over the recognition of his reincarnation. He emphasized:

“The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in the 24 September 2011 statement, which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.”

This formal declaration establishes that no external authority, including the Chinese government or any foreign power, has the right to intervene in or challenge the recognition of the next Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama stressed that the Gaden Phodrang Trust alone has the sole right to identify the future reincarnation, further asserting:

“No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.”

The trust, which has historically been responsible for overseeing the Dalai Lama’s affairs, will now continue to play a central role in the selection of the future leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday: A Momentous Celebration

The Dalai Lama’s confirmation regarding the continuation of his institution comes on the eve of his 90th birthday celebrations. On June 30, 2025, thousands of Tibetan Buddhists gathered at the Tsuglakhang Temple in Dharamshala, India, to celebrate the spiritual leader’s milestone birthday. The occasion was marked by prayer ceremonies, messages of solidarity, and well-wishes from followers across the globe.

Since fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a Chinese military crackdown on a Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India. He established a government-in-exile in Dharamshala, which continues to represent the Tibetan cause and promote Tibetan cultural and religious preservation.

Dalai Lama’s Position on His Successor: A Controversial Stance on Chinese Influence

In his statement, the Dalai Lama reiterated his stance that his successor will not be born in China, a direct challenge to Beijing’s authority over the matter. The Chinese government has long maintained that it alone has the right to recognize the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, a claim that has been rejected by the Tibetan spiritual leader and many of his supporters.

“My successor will be born outside China,” he clarified, reinforcing his earlier statements that China’s interference in Tibetan religious matters would not be tolerated.

This statement comes amid escalating tensions between the Chinese government and Tibetan religious institutions, as Beijing continues to assert control over Tibet and its spiritual leaders.

International Support for the Dalai Lama’s Stand

This announcement has been met with widespread support from various Buddhist communities, both in India and internationally. The Dalai Lama’s influence extends beyond Tibet, with millions of followers in Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, and the wider Buddhist world. In countries with significant Tibetan populations, such as India, the U.S., and Canada, the Dalai Lama’s declaration has sparked renewed calls for greater Tibetan autonomy and religious freedom.

At the same time, some critics have warned that China’s increasingly tight grip on religious affairs in Tibet poses a significant challenge to the continuity of Tibetan Buddhism, especially if Beijing continues to intervene in the succession process.

The Dalai Lama’s clear affirmation about the continuation of his institution after his death brings an end to years of speculation about the future of Tibetan Buddhism’s most revered figure. His declaration that the Gaden Phodrang Trust will hold exclusive authority in recognizing the next Dalai Lama underscores the Tibetan people’s desire to maintain control over their spiritual heritage, free from foreign influence.

As the Dalai Lama prepares to celebrate his 90th birthday, his words signal hope and confidence for future generations of Tibetans, both in exile and within Tibet, who continue to fight for religious freedom and the preservation of their unique culture.
