Vishnu Manchu’s Telugu film Kannappa has been garnering attention, especially in Northern India, due to its star-studded cast and its strong connection to Shiva bhakti. The film’s trailer has already piqued the interest of audiences, and with the involvement of Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, it is set to captivate a wider audience. The film, releasing on June 27, 2025, focuses on the devotion of Kannappa, a legendary figure deeply devoted to Lord Shiva. For many, the story of Kannappa might be unknown, but it holds profound significance in South Indian folklore and Hindu mythology.

Understanding the Film ‘Kannappa’ and its Significance

The film Kannappa is a mythology drama that revolves around the life and devotion of Kannappa, a legendary devotee of Lord Shiva. The film features a stellar cast, with Vishnu Manchu playing the lead role of Kannappa, while Akshay Kumar portrays Lord Shiva. Prabhas, known for his portrayal of iconic characters, makes a cameo appearance as Rudra, another devotee of Shiva, and Kajal Aggarwal plays Parvati, the consort of Shiva. This cinematic adaptation brings the incredible story of Kannappa’s devotion to life, weaving it into a narrative that resonates with viewers.

The film is produced by Mohan Babu and directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh. The story explores Kannappa’s devotion and sacrifices for Lord Shiva, a journey that involves extreme acts of faith, including the ultimate sacrifice of his own eyes. The portrayal of this spiritual journey on screen is not only visually captivating but also emotionally powerful, as it conveys the depths of devotion and the boundless love a devotee has for his deity.

Who Was Kannappa?

The story of Kannappa, originally named Thinnan, is an inspiring tale of selflessness, sacrifice, and undying devotion. According to legend, Kannappa was a hunter who lived in the forests of ancient India. He was known for his skills as a hunter, but his life took a significant turn when he encountered a Shiva temple in the forest during one of his hunting expeditions.

One day, while hunting wild boars, Kannappa lost track of his companions and found himself in a remote part of the forest. In his wandering, he stumbled upon a small, desolate Shiva temple. The temple housed a Shiva Lingam, and despite his lack of formal knowledge of the rituals and practices associated with worship, Kannappa was drawn to it. His heart filled with a deep connection to the deity, and he began offering his services in the temple, albeit in his own unique way.

Kannappa’s Unique Worship

Kannappa’s devotion to Shiva was pure, but his methods were unconventional. He didn’t know how to properly worship the Shiva Lingam, so he used what he had. Initially, he would offer meat as an offering to the deity, which shocked the local priests. However, Kannappa’s heart was filled with love and reverence for Shiva, and he continued offering his simple gifts, believing they were enough.

One day, Kannappa decided to offer water to the Shiva Lingam, but there was no vessel available. In his desperation, he filled his mouth with water and poured it over the Shiva Lingam. The priest, who visited the temple every few days, saw the offering and was shocked by the sight of it. He felt that such an offering was inappropriate for such a sacred temple.

Shiva’s Test of Devotion

The priest, disturbed by what he saw, went to Lord Shiva and expressed his concern. He questioned why the deity was allowing such impure offerings. Shiva, moved by the sincerity of Kannappa’s devotion, decided to test his love. He spoke to the priest, telling him that the offerings made by Kannappa were accepted because they were made with a heart full of love, even though they were unconventional.

In the next stage of the story, Shiva decided to test Kannappa’s devotion further. As Kannappa continued his ritual of pouring water and offering food, he noticed something unusual — blood began to flow from Shiva’s left eye. Disturbed but undeterred, Kannappa sought out herbs from the forest, but his attempts to heal the deity were unsuccessful. Desperate, Kannappa decided to offer one of his eyes to replace Shiva’s injured one.

The Ultimate Sacrifice: Kannappa’s Devotion to Lord Shiva

In a dramatic turn of events, Kannappa, in his intense devotion to Shiva, took a knife and removed one of his own eyes, placing it on the Shiva Lingam. Miraculously, the blood flow stopped. But to Kannappa’s horror, he noticed that Shiva’s other eye began to bleed. Unfazed by the challenge, Kannappa took out his other eye and placed it on the Shiva Lingam as well, sacrificing his sight for his deity.

At this point, Kannappa was blind, but he did not waver in his love for Shiva. He felt his way toward the Shiva Lingam with his feet, searching for where to place his final offering — the second eye. His devotion was so pure that Lord Shiva could no longer watch this act of sacrifice. In response, Shiva restored Kannappa’s sight and returned both of his eyes, a divine gesture that symbolized the acceptance of Kannappa’s immense devotion.

Kannappa’s Legacy and His Impact on Devotion

Following this miraculous act, Kannappa’s name became synonymous with pure devotion and sacrifice. His story exemplifies the power of unwavering faith, and his devotion to Lord Shiva became a symbol of the ideal bhakta (devotee). The name “Kannappa” comes from the Tamil word “Kann,” meaning eye, reflecting his ultimate sacrifice for the deity.

In the context of the film Kannappa, the story is not just a tale of a devotee’s love for his god but also a reflection of the human capacity for selfless acts of devotion. The film beautifully portrays the emotional and spiritual journey of a man who is willing to sacrifice everything, even his most precious senses, to please the divine.

The Film’s Star-Studded Cast and Their Roles

The film Kannappa brings this captivating story to life with an impressive cast. Vishnu Manchu takes on the role of Kannappa, and his portrayal of the legendary devotee promises to be both moving and inspiring. Akshay Kumar, one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors, plays Lord Shiva, bringing a sense of divine presence and grace to the role. Prabhas, known for his powerful performances, appears in a cameo as Rudra, another devotee of Shiva. Kajal Aggarwal plays Parvati, Shiva’s consort, adding a layer of divine femininity to the film.

The story of Kannappa resonates with audiences because it transcends religious boundaries and speaks to the universal human experience of devotion, sacrifice, and love. The film’s powerful narrative, coupled with the stellar performances of its cast, is sure to leave a lasting impact on viewers. For many, Kannappa will serve as a reminder of the power of devotion, the importance of selflessness, and the incredible potential of human faith.
