The sudden death of Shefali Jariwala, the popular actress known for her appearance in Bigg Boss 13 and the iconic 2002 music video “Kaanta Laga,” has raised significant concerns regarding the health risks associated with glutathione injections. The actress, who tragically passed away on June 27, 2025, was reportedly undergoing anti-aging treatment through glutathione injections, which are widely marketed for their skin lightening and detoxification benefits. While the exact cause of her death is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that low blood pressure, cardiac arrest, and gastric complications might have been triggered by the injection, especially when administered on an empty stomach.

This tragedy has brought to the forefront the potential dangers of skin-lightening treatments, particularly glutathione injections, which have gained immense popularity in recent years. In this article, we delve into the health implications of these injections and provide expert advice on how to prioritize safety when considering such treatments.

What is Glutathione and Why Is It Used for Skin Lightening?

Glutathione, often referred to as the “master antioxidant,” is a naturally occurring molecule in the human body that plays a crucial role in detoxifying the liver, boosting the immune system, and combating oxidative stress. It is also widely marketed for its skin-brightening properties, with many people turning to oral supplements, topical products, and intravenous injections to achieve a glowing complexion.

As explained by Dr. Sai Lahari Rachumallu, Associate Consultant in Dermatology at Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneshwar, glutathione is primarily known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to reduce oxidative stress. It is often consumed to enhance skin texture and detoxification. “Glutathione has become known for its skin-brightening properties and has been hailed as the ‘master antioxidant’ that is particularly beneficial in boosting immunity,” Dr. Rachumallu stated.

However, despite its widespread use, glutathione is not without risks, particularly when taken in high doses through intravenous (IV) injections. While the benefits are widely marketed, many health experts are urging caution when it comes to injecting glutathione, as there is limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for skin lightening.

Health Risks and Side Effects of Glutathione Injections

While glutathione is generally considered safe in moderate amounts, high doses—especially when administered via injection—can cause a range of adverse effects. The side effects of glutathione injections include:

  1. Abdominal Discomfort and Bloating: Some individuals experience abdominal cramps or bloating after receiving glutathione injections, which can be uncomfortable and distressing.

  2. Allergic Reactions: Glutathione injections can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, such as skin rashes, itching, and redness. These reactions can range from mild to severe, depending on the individual’s sensitivity.

  3. Reduction in Zinc Levels: Prolonged use of glutathione injections can sometimes lead to a reduction in zinc levels in the body, which may negatively impact the immune system and delay wound healing.

  4. Risk of Liver Damage: Although glutathione is known to detoxify the liver, excessive amounts can put additional strain on the liver, potentially leading to liver damage over time, especially when combined with other substances or medications.

  5. Gastrointestinal Issues: Some users report gastric issues such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after glutathione injections, particularly when taken on an empty stomach.

As Dr. Suchismitha Rajamanya, Lead Consultant and Head of Internal Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, points out, while glutathione is beneficial for detoxifying the liver and improving skin texture, the side effects can be significant, especially when used in high doses. “While glutathione can help protect cells from damage and promote healthy skin, excessive use—especially via injections—can lead to adverse effects such as abdominal discomfort and allergic reactions,” Dr. Rajamanya warned.

The Risk of Following Social Media Trends

One of the major concerns highlighted by experts is the growing trend of individuals opting for glutathione injections based on recommendations from social media influencers or celebrities, rather than consulting qualified professionals. The rise of social media platforms has led to an increase in the self-medication culture, with people often seeking shortcuts to achieve their desired appearance without fully understanding the risks involved.

Dr. Rachumallu emphasizes that individuals should not merely follow celebrity endorsements or social media trends when it comes to their health. “Before jumping on the glutathione bandwagon, it is important to consult with a qualified doctor or dermatologist,” she advised. “Even though many people swear by glutathione for fairness, the scientific evidence supporting its skin-whitening claims is still insufficient.”

The Growing Trend of Skin Lightening Treatments

The rise in the popularity of skin-lightening treatments like glutathione injections has sparked a broader conversation about the global trend toward lighter skin tones. In many cultures, fair skin is often equated with beauty, success, and social status, contributing to the growing demand for treatments that promise a fairer complexion. This demand is often driven by the allure of instant results, with many opting for procedures that promise youthful skin and a radiant appearance.

However, health professionals warn against the pursuit of skin lightening at the expense of health risks. While some individuals may experience positive results from glutathione injections, the potential long-term effects and side effects make it important to approach these treatments with caution and medical guidance.

Prioritizing Health and Safety in Skincare

As more people seek out treatments for glowing skin, it is essential to prioritize health and safety when considering any form of skincare, especially those involving injections or other invasive procedures. Consulting a licensed professional and ensuring that any treatment is tailored to individual health needs are critical steps in preventing complications.

Dr. Rajamanya further stressed the importance of conducting thorough research before undergoing any treatment. “Before trying any new skincare treatment, especially one that involves injections, it is crucial to consult with a qualified expert. Always prioritize your health over temporary cosmetic changes,” she advised.

The tragic death of Shefali Jariwala has underscored the potential risks associated with the popularity of glutathione injections for skin lightening and anti-aging purposes. While glutathione offers several benefits, including detoxification and skin improvement, it is crucial to approach such treatments with caution.

Experts recommend consulting qualified professionals, conducting thorough research, and being fully aware of the potential side effects before considering any skin treatment, particularly those that involve injections. Your health should always come first, and consulting with a dermatologist or medical expert is essential before embarking on any new skincare regimen.
