The rising cost of education in India, especially in private medical colleges, has become a significant concern for students aspiring to pursue MBBS. The fees in private institutions often range from INR 50 lakh to INR 1 crore, which is unaffordable for many. As a result, many Indian students are increasingly looking abroad for more affordable medical education. One such destination gaining popularity is Iran, where Indian students can pursue an MBBS degree at a fraction of the cost compared to India. This article explores the advantages, costs, and job prospects associated with studying MBBS in Iran and compares it to the situation in India.

Rising Fees in Indian Private Medical Colleges:
In India, pursuing an MBBS degree at a private medical college can cost anywhere between INR 50 lakh and INR 1 crore. This financial burden makes it extremely difficult for many middle-class students to fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors. Even with high NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) scores, securing admission in government medical colleges, where the fees are more affordable, is highly competitive due to limited seats—only about one lakh government medical seats are available annually, while around 20 lakh students appear for the NEET exam. As a result, many students seek educational opportunities abroad, where the admission process may be less competitive and more affordable.

Affordability of MBBS in Iran:
Iran offers a significantly more affordable option for pursuing an MBBS degree. The cost of studying medicine in Iran ranges between INR 15 lakh to INR 25 lakh, which is much lower than the fees in Indian private medical colleges. In addition to the lower tuition fees, the cost of living in Iran is also relatively inexpensive. Students can expect to spend only INR 10,000 to INR 12,000 per month on accommodation and food. This makes Iran an attractive destination for medical aspirants looking for quality education at an affordable price.

Admission Process in Iran:
Unlike many other countries, where entrance exams are required for admission to medical colleges, Iran admits students based on their NEET scores. This simplified admission process is a key advantage for Indian students, as it eliminates the need for additional entrance exams. Moreover, students who graduate from Iranian medical universities receive a globally recognized degree, which opens up various international career opportunities. The degree offers a significant advantage, providing students with exposure to global healthcare systems and networks, which can enhance their professional prospects.

Reputed Medical Universities in Iran:
Iran is home to several well-established medical universities where Indian students pursue their MBBS degrees. Some of the top institutions include:

  • Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences

  • Islamic Azad University

  • Tehran University of Medical Sciences

  • Hamadan University of Medical Sciences

  • Golestan University of Medical Sciences

  • Kerman University of Medical Sciences

According to government data, approximately 10,000 Indian nationals reside in Iran, and more than 1,500 of them are students, many of whom hail from Jammu and Kashmir. The presence of a large Indian student community in Iran further adds to the sense of security and community for those pursuing their medical degrees there.

Job Opportunities After MBBS in Iran:
While studying MBBS in Iran is affordable and offers quality education, students must consider the career implications of studying abroad. After completing their MBBS from an Iranian university, Indian students must pass the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) to practice medicine in India. This exam tests the knowledge and skills of foreign-trained medical graduates to ensure they meet the standards required for medical practice in India.

Once students pass the FMGE, they must complete a mandatory one-year internship before they can begin practicing medicine in India. However, there is a shortage of internship seats in several states, which can create additional challenges for students looking to start their medical careers.

Job Prospects in Other Countries:
For those who wish to work abroad, medical graduates from Iranian universities may find better opportunities in Middle Eastern countries, where the demand for healthcare professionals is higher. However, to practice medicine in Europe or the United States, additional exams such as the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) or PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) are required. These exams can be challenging and require significant preparation.

While pursuing an MBBS degree in Iran offers a more affordable alternative to studying in India, it is essential for students to weigh the potential job prospects carefully. The cost of education and living in Iran is significantly lower than in India’s private medical colleges, making it an attractive option for many students. However, aspiring doctors must be prepared for additional challenges, such as passing the FMGE exam and securing an internship in India. For those looking to work abroad, opportunities may exist in the Middle East, but practicing in the West would require passing additional licensing exams.
