Punjab Extends Winter School Holidays Until January 13 Amid Severe Cold Wave

Published on

The Punjab government has extended winter holidays for schools across the state until January 13, 2026. The decision was taken in view of the severe cold wave affecting large parts of North India. Authorities said the move aims to safeguard children from falling temperatures and harsh weather conditions.

The state has been witnessing intense cold, accompanied by dense fog and icy winds. In several regions, temperatures have dropped close to or below zero. Keeping student safety in mind, the government decided to prolong the winter break.

Order Applicable to All Schools Across Punjab

According to an official notification issued by the Education Department, the extended holidays will apply uniformly to all schools. The order covers government, aided, private, and affiliated institutions across Punjab. Earlier, winter holidays were announced for a shorter duration.

However, worsening weather conditions prompted a review. After assessing meteorological warnings and ground conditions, the state government approved the extension. Schools are now expected to reopen only after the Lohri festival.

Cold Wave and Fog Drive Government Action

Punjab has experienced a sharp decline in temperatures over the past few days. Cities including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Bathinda have reported extreme cold conditions. Morning and evening hours have been marked by dense fog, reducing visibility significantly.

These conditions raised safety concerns, especially for school buses and daily commuters. Poor visibility and slippery roads increased the risk of accidents. The situation prompted authorities to act swiftly.

Parents and Teachers Raised Safety Concerns

Before the announcement, several parent groups and teacher associations had appealed to the government. They expressed concern over children traveling in extreme cold. Younger students were seen as particularly vulnerable to weather-related illnesses.

Educators also highlighted difficulties in conducting regular classes. Low attendance and health risks made routine schooling challenging. The government considered these concerns before finalizing the decision.

Relief for Students and Families

The extension of holidays has brought relief to lakhs of students and their families. Parents welcomed the decision, calling it necessary under the current weather conditions. Many said sending children to school in freezing mornings was becoming increasingly difficult.

Primary school students were among the most affected groups. Early morning schedules during severe cold posed health risks. The extended break allows families to ensure children remain safe indoors.

Online Classes Remain an Option for Senior Students

While physical classes remain suspended, some schools have kept online options open. This is mainly for students preparing for board examinations. Schools aim to ensure that academic progress continues without compromising safety.

Officials clarified that online classes are optional. Parents can decide based on student comfort and access to digital resources. No compulsory attendance has been enforced during the holiday period.

Government Emphasizes Child Safety as Priority

The Punjab government reiterated that student health remains its top priority. Officials stated that decisions will continue to be guided by weather conditions. The situation will be reviewed regularly over the coming days.

If cold conditions persist beyond expectations, further measures may be considered. Authorities remain in touch with weather agencies to track temperature trends.

Advisory Issued for Cold Weather Precautions

Along with the holiday extension, the administration issued advisories for residents. Parents have been urged to keep children warm and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure. Proper clothing and indoor safety measures were recommended.

Citizens were also advised to remain cautious while traveling during foggy hours. The government stressed collective responsibility during extreme weather situations.

Schools to Resume After Weather Improves

For now, schools across Punjab will remain closed until January 13. Educational institutions are expected to resume normal operations once weather conditions stabilize. Final reopening dates will depend on further assessments.

The decision reflects the state’s proactive approach during adverse weather. By extending winter holidays, the government aims to balance education needs with student safety during one of the harshest winter spells in recent times.
