Weather Change in Bihar: Thunderstorm and Lightning Cause Multiple Deaths in Madhubani and Other Districts

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Bihar is witnessing a drastic shift in weather conditions, as a sudden change in the atmosphere has led to thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall across several districts. On Wednesday, the state saw the onset of harsh weather, causing widespread disruptions. The worst of it has been reported from Madhubani district, where a tragic incident claimed the lives of three people, including a father and his daughter, after being struck by lightning. The incident, which occurred in Rudrapur police station area of Alpura village, has left the community in shock and mourning.

The Incident in Madhubani: Father and Daughter Lose Their Lives

The victims of this tragic lightning strike were 62-year-old Mo Zakir and his 18-year-old daughter Ayesha. The father and daughter were traveling towards a nearby canal in the fields to cover their wheat crops with a tarp. As they reached near the canal, a bolt of lightning struck them, fatally injuring both. The force of the lightning left them severely burnt, and both died on the spot. This devastating event left their family in utter chaos, and their sudden loss has caused deep grief in the village.

Details of the Incident: Impact on the Family

Mo Zakir and Ayesha were residents of Alpura village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Rudrapur police station. On the fateful morning, the weather had already started deteriorating, with thunderstorms and rain hitting the region. As they were heading to cover the wheat stock from the rain, they were caught in an unfortunate storm, with the lightning strike proving fatal. The sudden nature of the incident has not only shocked the immediate family but also the entire community, which is now grappling with the loss of two beloved members.

The family was planning to shield the crops from the bad weather, but tragically, the weather itself took a toll on their lives. The incident has sent waves of sorrow throughout the village, and locals are in a state of disbelief at the suddenness of the event.

Other Casualty in Jhajharpur: Lightning Claims Another Life

In a separate incident, another lightning strike in Jhajharpur block, specifically in Pipraulia village, claimed the life of 45-year-old Durga Devi, the wife of Raman Kumar Mahto. The lightning struck while she was outside her home, and she was instantly killed by the impact. The incident occurred during the storm, as the weather worsened, with widespread lightning and thunder showers affecting the region.

Local authorities, including Mohammad Rezauddin, a Zila Parishad member, reached the spot shortly after the incident and expressed their condolences to the family. Mohammad Rezauddin assured that the affected families would receive all possible government assistance to help them through the tragedy.

Impact of the Storm and Weather Update

The tragic deaths due to lightning strikes highlight the dangerous side effects of the ongoing weather shift in Bihar. As thunderstorms continue to affect various regions, the weather department has issued warnings for additional thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in the coming days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to stay indoors during heavy rains and lightning strikes.

Government Response and Assistance

In the wake of these incidents, local authorities and elected representatives have pledged to provide the necessary support and aid to the affected families. The Bihar government has also assured financial compensation for the families of the victims. Bihar Chief Minister, in a statement, extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and promised swift relief efforts.

The government is also focusing on improving the weather forecasting system and issuing warnings in advance to ensure better preparedness in the future. Local officials are also calling for improved infrastructure in vulnerable areas, including proper lightning protection for fields and other open spaces.

Bihar’s Vulnerability to Thunderstorms and Lightning Strikes

Bihar has been no stranger to extreme weather events in recent years. Thunderstorms and lightning have caused a significant number of deaths and injuries in the state, especially during the transition from summer to the monsoon season. Bihar, being a primarily agricultural state, often sees workers in fields exposed to these sudden weather changes.

This year, the situation has worsened as the thunderstorm season began early, accompanied by high winds, intense rain, and lightning, leaving many vulnerable. In addition to the loss of life, the storms have also caused substantial damage to crops and homes, aggravating the challenges faced by local communities.

Safety Precautions During Thunderstorms and Lightning

The recent deaths have brought attention to the importance of safety during storms. The Bihar Disaster Management Department has issued guidelines advising the public to take appropriate precautions during thunderstorms and heavy rains. Some safety measures include:

  1. Stay Indoors: People should avoid going outside during storms, especially during lightning.

  2. Avoid Open Fields: Farmers and others working outdoors should avoid open fields and tall structures during thunderstorms.

  3. Avoid Water Bodies: People near rivers, canals, and ponds should stay away, as these areas are more prone to lightning strikes.

  4. Seek Shelter: If caught outdoors, people are advised to seek shelter in solid buildings or vehicles to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

The tragic deaths in Madhubani and Jhajharpur have highlighted the urgent need for better weather preparedness in Bihar. With more extreme weather events expected, it is crucial for both the government and citizens to be vigilant about the dangers of lightning and storms. Improved forecasting, better public awareness campaigns, and enhanced disaster response systems can significantly reduce the number of casualties in such incidents.

The deaths of Mo Zakir, Ayesha, and Durga Devi serve as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of safety during these dangerous times. As Bihar experiences more thunderstorms and heavy rains, it is essential for individuals to stay informed, heed weather warnings, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
