Monsoon to Intensify in Bihar from July 20, Thunderstorms and Widespread Rain Likely

The southwest monsoon is expected to become significantly active over Bihar from July 20, 2025, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms across several districts. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this intensified phase may lead to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning in parts of the state, offering much-needed relief from the persistent humidity.

Monsoon 2025: Rain Forecast for 19 Districts

As per the IMD Patna, monsoon conditions will strengthen from July 20, with a high chance of rainfall activity in at least 19 districts, including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Jamui, and others. Scattered showers and overcast skies are expected in the interim, providing temporary relief from the summer heat.

The Met Department also noted that there will be no major fluctuation in maximum temperatures over the next five days, though cloud cover and light rain may bring down the “feels-like” temperature during the day.

Recent Rainfall Brings Relief to Bihar Residents

Over the past 24 hours, several parts of Bihar received moderate rainfall, with Jamui’s Chakai region recording the highest rainfall at 32.2 mm. Patna city received 9.2 mm, while nearby areas like Phulwari Sharif recorded 14.0 mm. The rainfall was accompanied by cloud cover and occasional drizzle, significantly reducing the discomfort caused by heat and humidity.

In Patna, the maximum temperature dropped to 31.0°C, a noticeable fall from previous days, while the minimum was recorded at 25.9°C. Locals welcomed the brief respite after several days of hot and humid conditions.

Monsoon Impact on Major Cities: Temperature Update

The shift in weather patterns has had a noticeable impact on temperatures in Bihar’s key cities:

  • Patna: Max 31.0°C | Min 25.9°C

  • Gaya: Max 27.5°C | Min 25.0°C

  • Bhagalpur: Max 29.6°C | Min 25.4°C

  • Muzaffarpur: Max 32.4°C | Min 26.7°C

While the temperatures remain within typical monsoon-season ranges, the high humidity levels have kept the discomfort index high. However, the recent rainfall has slightly eased the oppressive conditions.

What to Expect: Weather Forecast for the Next 5 Days

According to meteorologists, Bihar can expect light to moderate rainfall in isolated places over the next 3–5 days. However, the main monsoon surge is likely to begin from July 20, bringing widespread rain and possibly thunderstorm activity, especially in central and southern parts of the state.

There is a potential risk of lightning strikes and waterlogging in urban areas, so residents are advised to stay updated with local weather advisories.

The upcoming active monsoon phase is significant for the agricultural sector in Bihar. The state, largely dependent on monsoon rains for paddy transplantation, has been witnessing a slow start to the rainy season, which has delayed sowing in some districts.

If the forecasted rains arrive on schedule, it will provide a much-needed boost to Kharif crop planting, ensuring better yields and reducing dependency on irrigation sources.
