Bihar Weather Update : Patna to Experience Increased Chill as Daytime Temperatures Dip Below Normal

Published on

As December progresses, residents of Bihar are grappling with dense fog, plunging temperatures, and the looming threat of a cold wave. Patna and many other districts across the state are currently experiencing chilly mornings and evenings, with weather officials forecasting a sharp temperature drop in the coming days. The situation is expected to worsen after December 22, as the cold intensifies, potentially leading to extreme winter conditions across the region.

Dense Fog Engulfs Bihar

On Wednesday morning, large portions of Bihar, including Patna, Bettiah, Gopalganj, and Sitamarhi, were blanketed in thick fog. The dense fog severely affected visibility, making it difficult for residents to go about their daily activities. The foggy conditions were particularly concerning for motorists, as low visibility increased the risk of accidents. In Banka district, fog-induced poor visibility led to a tragic incident, with two motorcycles colliding head-on, resulting in the death of one person.

Temperature Drop and Cold Wave Conditions Ahead

Weather experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have confirmed that the minimum temperature across the state has dropped to around 9°C. Samastipur recorded the coldest temperature at 9.5°C over the last 24 hours. While temperatures have been falling steadily, the cold weather is expected to worsen after December 19. Meteorologists predict that after December 22, Bihar will likely experience cold wave conditions, significantly reducing daytime temperatures and making it feel much colder throughout the day.

Western Disturbance to Intensify Cold Weather

IMD officials have stated that a western disturbance is set to become active over the western Himalayan region from December 17. This weather pattern is expected to influence Bihar’s weather after December 20. As the disturbance takes hold, cold north-westerly winds are predicted to advance into the state, further lowering both maximum and minimum temperatures. These winds are a significant factor contributing to the severe cold conditions experienced in Bihar during December, especially in the second and third weeks.

Impact of Himalayan Snowfall on Bihar’s Weather

Meteorological records from the past few years indicate that Bihar typically experiences intense winter conditions during the latter half of December. This is mainly due to the strengthening of western winds, which are further intensified by snowfall in the Himalayan region. These active western disturbances tend to push cold air into eastern India, amplifying the effects of winter across states like Bihar. Based on current weather patterns, this trend seems to be continuing this season.

Patna Weather Outlook: Increased Chill Expected

In Patna, residents are currently experiencing mild to moderate cold during the morning and evening hours. While the minimum temperatures remain slightly below the normal range, daytime temperatures are expected to stay around average levels due to the sunshine. However, this may change after December 19, as the cold intensity is predicted to increase, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings. The city will likely see colder temperatures in the coming days, contributing to a sharper chill during these times.

Cold Wave Likely to Sweep Bihar After December 22

Looking ahead, the weather department has issued warnings for cold wave-like conditions in Bihar, particularly after December 22. This could lead to a significant drop in daytime temperatures, potentially plunging them well below the usual norms. In some districts, the impact of this cold wave could result in what is known as “cold day” conditions. During these periods, even during the daytime, the cold may be severe, with minimal relief from the chill. This could affect daily life, especially for vulnerable populations, as prolonged exposure to low temperatures can lead to health issues like frostbite and respiratory illnesses.

As the winter season sets in, Bihar is bracing for a significant dip in temperatures, with dense fog and cold wave conditions becoming increasingly likely. Weather officials advise residents to take precautions, especially in districts affected by thick fog, to avoid accidents and health risks associated with the cold. With the anticipated onset of harsher winter conditions after December 22, residents of Patna and surrounding areas can expect a colder than usual December, making it essential to stay informed about weather updates and follow safety guidelines to stay warm and healthy.
