Current Situation – Friday, June 28

Southern Bihar districts — Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Rohtas, Kaimur, and Patna — are under a heavy rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Moderate to heavy rain showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are likely through the day .

Patna is forecasted to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, with substantial cloud cover. Similar conditions are expected across East and West Champaran, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur, Buxar, Jehanabad, Nalanda, and other districts .

The weather remains humid and overcast, and despite the rain, there will be no significant temperature drop. Expect highs between 32–34 °C across South Bihar and lows of 26–28 °C statewide .

What Caused the Rain?

A low-pressure system centered over northwest Bay of Bengal, combined with an active trough line extending from Central Madhya Pradesh to North Bihar, is enhancing monsoon activity over the state . The rainfall is part of the peak monsoon phase, typically experienced from late June through September in Bihar .

Forecast: Sunday Onward

From Sunday, June 29, North Bihar (e.g., Muzaffarpur, East/West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Siwan, Saran) is projected to see a significant uptick in rainfall. The IMD anticipates widespread, moderate to heavy showers, with thunderstorms and lightning, continuing through early next week .

Sunday is expected to be cloudy with intermittent rainfall, transitioning to more intense spells Monday through Wednesday as the monsoon settles in across North Bihar .

Impact & Precautions

  1. Public Safety:

    • Thunderstorms/lightning pose risks—residents should avoid open areas and tall trees during storms .

    • Stay indoors where possible and protect electronics from power surges.

  2. Flood Risk:

    • Heavy rains could lead to waterlogging in low-lying zones, especially in Patna and other major towns.

    • Inland rivers like the Kosi and Gandak may swell due to upstream precipitation in Nepal, raising flood concerns

  3. Transport Disruptions:

    • Roads may become slippery, and visibility may reduce during heavy downpours. Motorists are advised to drive slowly.

    • Flash floods and rising river levels could affect rail and road infrastructure.

  4. Agriculture:

    • While rain offers crucial support to farmers, sudden intense showers can damage standing crops. Ensure proper drainage and irrigation adjustments.

Weekly Weather Breakdown

Date Region Weather Forecast
June 28 (Sat) South Bihar Heavy to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning; temperatures 32–34°C
June 29 (Sun) North Bihar Showers increasing, cloudy, thunderstorms likely
June 30–July 2 Entire Bihar Monsoon active statewide; intermittent heavy rain, thunderstorms expected

Recommended Safety Measures

  • Avoid open fields and trees during thunderstorms.

  • Keep emergency kits and essential supplies ready, including flashlights and power banks.

  • Monitor river levels—especially Kosi, Gandak, and Burhi Gandak—via official bulletins.

  • Farmers should ensure proper crop drainage and safeguard seedlings or ripe crops from heavy wind.

  • Commuters should check travel advisories, allow extra travel time, and carry rain protection.

Bihar’s monsoon is entering a critical phase—heavy rains in the south today, followed by massive showers across the north by Sunday. With lightning, floods, and travel disruption on the horizon, vigilance and preparedness are paramount.
