Bihar Faces Warmer Nights, But Health Risks Rise Amid Dense Fog and Pollution

Published on

Bihar is experiencing a slight increase in minimum temperatures this week, offering a brief reprieve from the recent cold spell. However, the region is also grappling with dense fog and worsening pollution, which have escalated health concerns across the state. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, warning of potential weather changes within the next 48 hours.

Slight Rise in Minimum Temperatures, No Major Change Expected

After several days of temperatures dipping below 10°C, the mercury in Bihar saw a minor rise on Wednesday due to the weakening of westerly winds. Despite this temporary relief, the weather conditions quickly deteriorated as dense fog enveloped large parts of the state. Hospitals from Patna to Gaya reported a sharp increase in patients suffering from heart and respiratory issues.

Hospital data indicates that the number of cases has surged by nearly one and a half times, as the cold winds and declining air quality combine to create hazardous conditions for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

The IMD predicts that minimum temperatures across most of Bihar will rise by 1 to 3°C over the next 24 hours, though no significant changes are expected thereafter. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain steady for the next three to four days.

In the last 24 hours, maximum temperatures across the state ranged between 25.5°C and 31.4°C. Minimum temperatures ranged from 12.2°C to 19.6°C. Eastern Bihar, however, saw little fluctuation in temperatures during this period. Purnia recorded the highest maximum temperature at 30.8°C, while Aurangabad logged the lowest minimum temperature at 12.2°C.

Fog and Poor Visibility Across Bihar

On Wednesday morning, dense fog severely reduced visibility across many parts of Bihar. Gaya reported the poorest visibility, with the fog limiting sight to just 600 meters. Patna also experienced significantly reduced visibility, coupled with heavy dew accumulation across rural fields, making travel and outdoor activities challenging.

Westerly winds of up to 25 km/h are expected to continue on Thursday, keeping conditions dry. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 26°C and 32°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to hover between 12°C and 18°C. South Bihar, particularly districts such as Gaya, Nawada, and Aurangabad, will continue to face the harshest combination of fog and cold temperatures.

Possible Weather Changes After November 22

The IMD has issued a cautionary statement, indicating the possibility of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22. If the system intensifies and moves northwestward, it could bring significant changes to Bihar’s weather. However, meteorologists caution that it is still too early to determine whether this system will result in cloud cover, rainfall, or a further drop in temperatures.

Health Concerns Amid Fog and Pollution

The ongoing combination of dense fog, low temperatures, and rising pollution levels has raised significant health concerns. Medical professionals are urging residents to limit their exposure to cold air, particularly during the morning hours when the fog is most intense.

Doctors recommend that individuals cover their head, ears, and feet when venturing outside. Staying hydrated, engaging in light exercises, and following a balanced diet are also important for maintaining health during these challenging weather conditions.

A physician based in Patna emphasized the importance of being cautious in such weather. “Even a slight lapse in care can trigger illness in this kind of environment,” they warned.

The Impact of Weather on Health: Why Vulnerable Groups Are at Risk

The effects of the fog, cold, and pollution are particularly concerning for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions. These individuals are at a higher risk of suffering from ailments like asthma attacks, heart complications, and other respiratory illnesses due to the combination of cold air and high pollution levels.

Hospitals in the state have reported an increase in patients seeking treatment for symptoms related to poor air quality, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Doctors have advised residents, especially those with underlying health conditions, to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid exertion.

Future Weather Outlook for Bihar

As the state braces for possible weather changes in the coming days, residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for any sudden shifts. While the IMD’s forecast indicates a minor rise in temperatures, the potential for more significant weather changes after November 22 has created uncertainty.

With the possibility of a low-pressure system affecting the region, Bihar could experience shifting weather patterns, including cloud cover or rainfall, which might further impact air quality and temperature fluctuations.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

Given the health risks posed by the current weather conditions, medical experts urge people to adopt certain precautions to minimize the effects of the cold and pollution. Along with the recommendations to stay covered and hydrated, doctors emphasize the importance of maintaining good indoor air quality. Those living in areas with severe pollution levels should consider using air purifiers and limiting outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours.

While Bihar experiences warmer nights this week, the rising fog and pollution continue to pose significant health risks. The slight increase in minimum temperatures may provide temporary relief, but residents must remain vigilant as dense fog and poor air quality exacerbate health concerns. Medical professionals advise caution, particularly for vulnerable groups, as the state awaits potential weather changes after November 22.

As the weather pattern evolves, it is essential for the public to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health during these challenging conditions.
