Bihar Crime : Newlywed Woman Murdered Over Dowry in Muzaffarpur

Published on

In a tragic incident in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a newlywed woman was brutally murdered by her in-laws over dowry demands. The victim, identified as Mamta Kumari, was tied up by her in-laws before being attacked with acid. Her brother, Sanjay Sahni, has accused her husband, father-in-law, and other in-laws of harassing her for dowry. Following the complaint, the police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after a post-mortem.

The Horrific Incident

The incident took place in the Chorkaria village under the jurisdiction of the Turki police station in Muzaffarpur. Mamta Kumari was married to Deepu Sahni in April 2024. According to the police, the family members of the victim had been tormenting her over dowry demands ever since the marriage. Sanjay Sahni, the brother of the victim, reported that his family had tried to intervene by speaking with the in-laws to resolve the issues. When discussions failed to bring any resolution, a village panchayat was called, where the in-laws seemed to have agreed to treat Mamta well.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Sanjay’s sister, Rekha Devi, received a call informing her that Mamta was ill and had been admitted to the hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, they found that Mamta’s face and neck were severely burned by acid. She was gasping for life. The doctors informed Sanjay that his sister’s condition was critical, and moments later, she passed away.

Mamta Kumari’s Tragic Death

According to Sanjay Sahni, Mamta’s in-laws, including her husband Deepu Sahni, father-in-law Naresh Sahni, brother-in-law Ritu Raj Sahni, and others, had been harassing her for dowry ever since her marriage. Sanjay revealed that his sister had been physically and mentally tortured by her in-laws for not fulfilling their dowry demands. He claims that her in-laws tied her up and poured acid on her face, leading to her untimely death.

Sanjay explained that after the marriage, Mamta had been subjected to continuous domestic violence. Despite his efforts to mediate between the families and arrange a solution through the village panchayat, the harassment did not stop. Eventually, Mamta’s tragic end came when she was cruelly attacked by her in-laws, resulting in her fatal injuries.

Police Investigation and Action

Following the horrifying incident, the police immediately launched an investigation into the matter. Station House Officer (SHO) Rohan Kumar stated that after receiving information about the crime, a police team was sent to record statements. Sanjay’s complaint clearly outlined the charges against Mamta’s in-laws, accusing them of domestic and dowry harassment, which led to the brutal acid attack. The police have forwarded a copy of the statement to the Turki police station for further legal action.

The police have also sent the body for a post-mortem based on Sanjay’s statement, and it was handed over to the family afterward. The police have assured that they will take all necessary legal actions to ensure justice for the victim.

The Impact of Dowry Harassment

This tragic incident highlights the continuing issue of dowry harassment, which remains a severe problem in many parts of India. Despite legal measures to combat dowry-related violence, cases like Mamta Kumari’s show that dowry harassment continues to affect countless women. Mamta’s death raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current laws and the enforcement of dowry prohibition.

Mamta Kumari’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the severe consequences of dowry-related violence. The brutality of the crime, where a woman was not only physically tortured but also murdered in such a heinous manner, has shocked the local community. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. For now, the family of Mamta Kumari seeks justice, and the incident serves as a somber reminder of the deep-rooted social issues that continue to affect many women in India.
