AIIMS Patna Spreads Breast Cancer Awareness in Rural Bihar

Published on

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna successfully concluded the Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a community outreach event held on October 31, 2025, in Ajwan village in the Naubatpur block of Patna. This initiative was aimed at raising awareness about the early detection and prevention of breast cancer among rural women in the area.

Community Outreach and Health Education

AIIMS Patna’s faculty members, along with resident doctors from the Department of Community and Family Medicine, led the health talk. The session focused on helping participants identify early warning signs of breast cancer, understand its risk factors, and the critical importance of regular screenings. These health talks aimed to empower women with the knowledge they need to take charge of their own health and seek medical help when necessary.

To further drive home the message of self-awareness, a live demonstration on self-breast examination (SBE) was conducted. The demonstration showed women how to perform this vital examination at home, encouraging them to regularly monitor their breast health. This hands-on approach was well-received, as it allowed women to learn a practical method for detecting any abnormalities early.

Engaging the Rural Audience Through Street Play

To make the awareness campaign more engaging and accessible to the community, interns and postgraduate residents from AIIMS Patna performed a nukkad natak, a traditional street play. The play was designed to dispel common myths surrounding breast cancer and provided clear, factual information about prevention and the importance of early detection. It was an interactive and educational way to connect with the rural audience and foster discussions on health-related topics that are often considered taboo in many communities.

The street play was met with enthusiastic participation from the audience, especially women of different age groups. This demonstrated a growing openness within rural communities to talk about women’s health and the importance of taking preventive health measures. The performance aimed not only to inform but also to remove any stigma associated with breast cancer, encouraging more women to seek help and get screened.

AIIMS Patna’s Commitment to Women’s Health and Empowerment

AIIMS Patna emphasized that this outreach program was part of its broader initiative to strengthen preventive oncology, community health education, and women’s empowerment. The event highlighted the importance of educating women about breast cancer and provided them with the tools they need to protect themselves. By focusing on rural areas, AIIMS Patna aims to reach women who might not have easy access to healthcare facilities or awareness programs.

The Global Significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated globally every October, is commonly referred to as Pink October due to its association with the pink ribbon. The month-long observance aims to increase awareness about breast cancer, focusing on early detection, education, and supporting those who have been affected by the disease. The awareness campaign underscores the fact that early diagnosis is the key to improving survival rates. Early detection through self-examination, clinical exams, and screenings can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment and survival.

AIIMS Patna’s Role in Rural Health Education

AIIMS Patna has been actively working towards spreading awareness in rural regions through outreach programs like this one. The initiative in Ajwan village is a testament to their ongoing commitment to public health education in underserved areas. By reaching out to rural populations, AIIMS Patna not only educates but also empowers women to take control of their health, thus contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

This event in Ajwan village reflects the growing need to address women’s health issues in rural areas, where such topics may often be overlooked or avoided. With efforts like these, AIIMS Patna hopes to foster a more informed and healthier rural population. Through continued outreach, health talks, and hands-on demonstrations, AIIMS Patna is helping bridge the gap in healthcare awareness between urban and rural areas, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the fight against breast cancer.

AIIMS Patna’s initiative in Ajwan village exemplifies the importance of community-based health education in tackling breast cancer. The combination of health talks, live demonstrations, and cultural performances made it easier for rural women to understand the significance of early detection and the role it plays in improving survival rates. The event not only raised awareness but also encouraged women to be proactive about their health. By continuing such efforts, AIIMS Patna is helping create a healthier and more informed society.
