Heavy Rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Schools Closed, Alert Issued

Published on

A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal crossed the coast on Monday evening. Its impact caused continuous heavy rainfall across several regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana overnight. Many areas woke up to waterlogged streets, traffic disruptions, and an official rain alert on Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department has confirmed that the weather system will continue to bring widespread rainfall. Many districts have already declared holidays for schools and colleges, prioritizing student safety.

Schools Closed in Andhra Pradesh

In Andhra Pradesh, several districts have ordered school closures due to intense rainfall. District collectors in Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, and Manyam declared holidays for educational institutions. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and has hinted at possible extensions if the weather does not improve.

Authorities in Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada, and East Godavari are also considering shutting down schools and colleges. Safety advisories have been issued urging parents to confirm with local schools before sending children.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the rain situation in the state. He advised officials to ensure timely closures of institutions if rainfall persists. His directive highlights the government’s focus on minimizing risks to children during extreme weather.

Telangana Declares School Holidays in Multiple Districts

In neighboring Telangana, the situation is equally concerning. Heavy downpours have led to the closure of schools in Siddipet and Adilabad districts.

In Kamareddy district, both Dongadli and Madnur mandals have declared school holidays. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed district collectors and education officials to make quick decisions regarding closures if rainfall continues.

Parents in districts without official holiday notifications have been urged to stay alert. They are advised to call schools directly for confirmation. Many schools are also using WhatsApp groups and SMS alerts to keep parents informed.

Areas Likely to Receive More Rainfall Today

The weather department has issued region-specific alerts for both states.

In Telangana, districts such as Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Khammam, Hyderabad, Warangal, Nalgonda, Jagtial, Ramagundam, Bellampalli, Banswada, Medak, Thuphran, Medchal, Jangaon, Suryapet, and Kothagudem are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain.

In Andhra Pradesh, areas like Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Eluru, Konaseema, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Krishna, NTR, Tuni, Bobbili, Parvathipuram, Manyam, and Araku may also see significant rainfall today.

Officials warn that rainfall intensity may vary but isolated places could experience cloudbursts. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours.

Administration Prepares for Emergency Measures

District administrations have started setting up emergency control rooms in rain-hit areas. Disaster management teams are on standby to respond to floods or landslides.

In low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh, waterlogging has already been reported. Municipal authorities are working with state disaster teams to clear blocked drains and manage traffic disruptions.

In Telangana, urban regions like Hyderabad and Warangal are preparing for severe waterlogging. Officials have deployed pumps in flood-prone colonies. Commuters have been urged to avoid venturing out unless necessary.

Public Safety Advisory

Authorities in both states have issued clear advisories for residents. People living in vulnerable areas such as riverbanks or hill slopes are being urged to stay alert.

Travelers are advised to check local updates before starting journeys. Parents are requested to confirm school schedules directly. Farmers have also been warned about possible crop damage due to heavy rainfall.

The disaster management department has asked residents to store essential items and avoid going near water bodies. Citizens have also been encouraged to use helpline numbers in case of emergencies.

Past Weather Patterns Highlight Growing Concerns

This spell of rainfall comes after similar heavy showers earlier this monsoon season. In July, both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana witnessed flash floods that caused extensive damage. Several roads were submerged, and electricity supply was disrupted for hours.

Experts warn that such low-pressure systems are becoming frequent in the Bay of Bengal. Climate change is said to be intensifying these systems, increasing the risk of heavy downpours in coastal and inland regions.

Political Leadership Reviews Situation

Both Chief Ministers have been actively monitoring the developments. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a late-night review meeting with officials. He directed local administrations to prioritize evacuation plans in case rainfall escalates further.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has assured citizens that the state is prepared. He emphasized coordination between collectors, education officers, and municipal staff. The Chief Minister also asked power distribution companies to be prepared for outages.

Social Media Flooded with Rain Updates

As the rains lashed cities, social media platforms were flooded with pictures and videos. In Visakhapatnam, users shared clips of flooded roads where vehicles were stranded. In Hyderabad, visuals of heavy showers hitting IT corridors were widely circulated.

Parents also used WhatsApp groups to confirm school closures. Many schools updated parents directly on social media handles, reducing confusion.

Impact on Daily Life and Transportation

The heavy rainfall has disrupted daily routines. In several areas of Andhra Pradesh, buses faced delays due to waterlogging. Rural connectivity also suffered as smaller roads were submerged.

In Telangana, Hyderabad witnessed traffic congestion on major routes. The metro rail service, however, continued without major interruptions.

Farmers reported concerns about standing crops being damaged. Paddy fields in East Godavari and Guntur districts are particularly vulnerable. Officials have promised compensation if crop losses are confirmed after assessment.

The low-pressure system from the Bay of Bengal has triggered severe rainfall across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. With schools and colleges closed in multiple districts, the administrations are taking no chances regarding student safety.

Weather forecasts indicate that moderate to heavy rainfall will continue in several districts of both states. Authorities are on high alert, and citizens are being urged to remain cautious.

As climate patterns intensify, such extreme weather events are expected to recur. Preparedness, timely warnings, and community cooperation remain the key to minimizing risks during these heavy rain spells.
