Bihar Weather Update : Severe Cold and Dense Fog Persisting Across the State

Published on

The cold wave in Bihar continues to grip the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting chilly conditions until December 26, 2025. The weather is expected to remain frigid, with dense fog likely to cover most parts of the state during the mornings and evenings. The ongoing cold wave has intensified, significantly affecting daily life in the region.

As winter sets in, many districts in Bihar are witnessing a drastic drop in temperatures, making it the coldest period in recent years. On Tuesday, December 23, the state experienced extreme cold conditions that had not been seen in the last three years. The frigid northwest winds, accompanied by a dense fog blanket, have further worsened the chill. The drop in temperature has left many people seeking refuge indoors, avoiding the cold outdoors.

Cold Wave Impacting Bihar’s Daily Life

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature across the state ranged from 7.8°C to 13.7°C. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature also saw a noticeable drop. The IMD has issued a warning that many districts across Bihar will experience cold day conditions, resembling a “shiver day,” until December 26. The morning and night hours are likely to witness thick fog, making travel difficult and adding to the discomfort of residents.

In Patna, the coldest day in three years was recorded on Tuesday. The city’s minimum temperature dropped to 11.0°C, whereas, in December 2022, Patna’s minimum temperature was recorded at 10.6°C. Over the coming days, Patna is expected to see dense fog during the mornings, followed by moderate fog in the evenings. There has been a noticeable decline of 1.5°C in the city’s minimum temperature, and the maximum temperature has fallen by 4.4°C, reaching 14.5°C on Tuesday.

Dense Fog and Visibility Concerns

As temperatures plummet, dense fog continues to create hazardous conditions, particularly in the morning. On Tuesday, Gaya recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 7.8°C, with Patna’s visibility reduced to a mere 100 meters in the morning due to thick fog. Gaya, along with other districts like Nalanda, Sheikhpura, and Bhagalpur, faced severe fog conditions, with the visibility dropping to as low as 50 meters.

Gaya, Patna, and Bhagalpur were all affected by dense fog, and 28 districts of Bihar saw fog cover during the early hours of the day. The highest temperature of the day, 21.2°C, was recorded in Rajgir, while the lowest temperature was recorded in Gaya. The fog in the morning was so thick in certain areas that it disrupted normal life, leading to significant delays and disruptions in daily activities.

The Cold Wave Continues: No Immediate Relief

The cold conditions in Bihar are expected to continue, with no immediate relief in sight. According to the latest forecast from the IMD, the state is likely to experience even colder temperatures beginning December 24. The IMD has issued a warning for “cold day” conditions across various regions of Bihar, including the Magadh region, Shahabad, Patna, Saran, Mithila, and Champaran. These areas are expected to experience intense cold waves until December 26, which will further affect daily life and outdoor activities.

In Eastern Bihar, a Yellow Alert has been issued, indicating the persistence of cold conditions. Residents in these regions have been advised to take extra precautions against the cold, especially during early mornings and late evenings. With dense fog still anticipated to blanket most parts of Bihar, commuters are urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in the morning hours.

Weather Change Expected After December 27

The weather is expected to shift on December 27, offering some respite from the ongoing cold conditions. As per the IMD, the cold wave is likely to ease off by the end of December 26, bringing warmer conditions to the region. The change in weather will provide much-needed relief to the people who have been bearing the brunt of the harsh winter for the past few weeks.

Until then, people in Bihar will have to endure the severe cold and fog, which is likely to continue affecting daily life. The state’s residents are advised to stay indoors during the coldest hours of the day and take necessary precautions to stay warm.

As winter deepens across Bihar, the weather department continues to monitor the cold wave closely. With dense fog, low temperatures, and poor visibility persisting in many parts of the state, residents are advised to remain vigilant. While a slight improvement in weather conditions is expected after December 27, the ongoing cold spell will continue to impact life in the state.

In the meantime, people in Bihar must prepare for more chilly days ahead, with the IMD’s forecasts suggesting that the cold wave could last until at least December 26. The weather is expected to shift thereafter, but for now, Bihar continues to battle through one of the coldest periods in recent memory.
